I want to talk a little bit about my daily routine living with a Japanese family, not so much the sightseeing and weekend type stuff, but just a normal school day, this will possibly be fairly boring, so feel free to scroll over this post if you aren’t interested! :)I wake up at about 6am every day, get out of bed and pack up my futon, which is then stored in a cupboard through the say in order to save floor space. After that I head straight down to breakfast, which my host mother will usually have already made and set on the table (Most mornings are a bowl of rice, a bowl of Miso soup and one other dish, perhaps meat or fish).After breakfast I will wash my face (This is a common practice in Japan as showers are taken in the afternoon, not the morning) and put on my school uniform, collect my bento from my host mum in the kitchen and head out the door, usually at about 7am. My walk from home to the train station is about 10 minutes, and from there I catch a 20 minute train ride from Kibogaoka (My station) to Yamato (The nearest major station) where I change trains through the rush hour crowd (pictures included) and take another 35 minute ride to Zengyo, the station nearest my school. From that station to school is about a another 5 minute walk to the school grounds where I enter a large room containing the shoe lockers for the entire school, at this point I change from my outdoor, walking to and from school shoes, into my indoor ones which I will wear for the whole school day (Except for PE, which has it’s own uniform).First lesson begins just after 8, this is only for my class however and is a kind of extra lesson which students volunteer for, normal lessons begin at 8 40. The day is made up of seven 50 minute periods, between third and fourth there is a 20 minute recces, and between fourth and fifth is a 30 minute lunch break. During which time students with packed lunches will remain at their desks to eat and others will head down to the Cafeteria. Hanging with friends at lunch time doesn’t really happen at my school, unlike Australian schools where students sit in the grounds, Japanese students remain in their classes during breaks. Last lesson ends at 3 20 for most classes (these classes only have 6 lessons for day) but again, my class opts for the extra one, meaning we finish at 4 30pm, at which time I will do one of two things; On a day when I have club training, I will change into my PE uniform and go straight to the club room, or on a day when there is no training I will remain in class and talk to my friends (This is another different thing about Japan, many students do not actually go home after school, as everyone lives so far apart the easiest way to be with friends is to simply stay at the end of the day and sit at out desks talking or playing video games, often until quite later, 6pm I will usually head home, although I am always the first to leave and my friends will stay up until they need to return home for dinner, often getting their homework done while they talk.On a club day training finishes at about the same time, and after the train trip home I usually arrive at about 7pm. The first thing I will do is change out of my school uniform an then eat dinner with my host family before either chatting with them for a few hours, doing my homework, or both. At about 9 30pm it will be my turn in the bathroom, and following that I will roll my futon, and then have a bit of free time until about 11pm when I will go to sleep. That is just a basic day, and often other things fit it as well eg. outings with my family or friends, extra homework or late club practice, but I hope I was still able to give you all a good general idea of my Japanese daily life :) If anyone has any more questions please feel free to ask! :)
