I want to talk about Ford’s polydactyly.

Because of his abnormality, people began to taunt him, calling him ‘freak’, and even though Stan tried to normalize his condition by his ‘sixer’ and “high six”

The bullying that he received still made him insecure about his hands, so he developed a habit of placing them behind his back to hide them from others.

And that insecurity stayed with Ford until college, as he was uncomfortable with handshakes

But when it was time to pick his field of study–what he would use his $100,000 for, what he would be researching for years to come, what his career would be based on–it was his polydactyly that inspired him to study anomalies.  

He even decided to use his hand as the symbol for his journals!

And he only grew more comfortable with his hands as time went on. For 36 years later he happily shakes hands with Mabel after returning to his dimension

And even uses his extra finger has an advantage to show off his skill.

It just makes me so happy that Ford was able to realize that his polydactyly was a positive instead of a negative, and because of that he was able to study the paranormal that he loved so much.
