“Hey, that sounds good to me,” he said as he drove towards the diner. “I’m the same and boring. I work, I do grad school prep work, I go home and hang out with Hannah.”

“Don’t let Mami hear you say that,” he laughed. “I’m doing alright. Just the same old. I’m boring.”

He laughed. “Alright, alright. So how’ve you been?”

“Kids aren’t brats. Surfer gringos with parents that are old, old money are brats.”

Walden smiled and nodded over to his card. “So update me, Jazz. What have you been up to besides work?”

He shrugged. “Like, I appreciate what aid mom and dad do give. And I know we’re really well off. But some of the kids here ridiculously wealthy.”

“Maybe somewhere not as greasy as my hands,” she laughed softly. “Let me just wash them.” she said going back an cleaning up.

“Gonna be a little bit hard around here,” he laughed. “We can try for Wests? Good variety there.”

She laughed with him “I know, I love being here,” she said. “But i’m due for a break, want to grab some lunch?”

“Lunch sounds amazing. I’ll buy,” he smiled. “Where do you want to go?”

“We’ll have a lot of fun together to be honest.”

“I like cooking. But I’ve always goofed around in the kitchen, which never amused my mom.”

“Oh boo, I haven’t pranked anyone in ages and white boys are the best targets.”

“Oh for sure, I used to live in L.A. They’re everywhere there like some sort of nasty virus. Do you remember what he looks like? We can prank him.”

“He was a generic California White Boy. I don’t think I’d recognize him again if he came in the store honestly.”

“Sounds rough — did you smell their breath? I was always drinking beer behind 24/7 when I was sixteen. Maybe the little shit was drunk.”

“Nah, he didn’t get close enough. And he didn’t seem drunk, just entitled. Like, my family’s pretty well off. But this kid screamed ‘I’ll never have to work a day in my life’, you know?”

“And I’m going to cry when you graduate. I’ll be so proud. Maybe I’ll take one of your classes.”

“Yeah, in a hundred million years when I finally earn my PhD and get a job.”

“I think what you’re doing is amazing. I couldn’t handle that much school. The Academy is hard enough.”

“It’s a lot, but at the end, like you, I’ll be doing what I love.”

“He doesn’t really remember me. He’s 20, but he’s going to move in with me quite soon.”

“Well he has a chance to learn,” he smiled as they got to his apartment.

“I mean he’s the only one who accepted me, but he’s younger. Like way younger. When he gets on his own I’ll see him.”

“Hey, that’s great. At least you have a plan to see him.”
