Leonary Nimoy as Spock was my first friend; I figured he alone knew what it was like to be unique. Later, he was the bridge between me and my two best friends. John Paul Jones (yes, that's his real name) loaned me a book from the Star Trek series published by Pocket Books. The story took place on Spock's home world and explained much about Vulcans.

I wanted to be one, but my friend Lara claimed she was one. Paul and I just took it in stride; it suited our purposes since by then we'd formed a fan club/roleplay group.

In my early spiritual days I adopted the Vulcan tenets as mine. I wore an IDIC (Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations, represented by an offset triangle piercing a circle to form a diamond at the center). Eventually it got replaced by my pentacle...but the basic beliefs underlying it never changed and I will always remember they came from a fictional character he played.

A tiger mother lost her cubs from premature labour. Shortly after she became depressed and her health declined, and she was diagnosed with depression. So they wrapped up piglets in tiger cloth, and gave them to the tiger. The tiger now loves these pigs and treats them like her babies.

Rewriting a Media Faux Pas

so that as many, who may be interested in the project, may see it as possible.In Fox network's fall line-up for 2014-15 was a show titled

The Red Band Society

which was itself a remake of a Catalan show based on the creator's experiences as a child patient. I had been excited about the series until, three episodes in, I realized that the show would focus for the most part on the two handsome male cancer patients, the anorexic girl, and a cheerleader with an enlarged heart who is at the bottom of the transplant list because of drug use. For variety the creators of the series threw in two seldom seen patients with cystic fibrosis, a boy with cancer now needing a liver because of cirrhosis, and a boy in a coma who, as narrator, knows everything happening since he is neither conscious nor unconscious. Compare this with the original series, which had only six characters: two with cancer, a girl with anorexia, a boy with Asperger's, a boy with an apparently undiagnosed but serious condition, and the coma patients. Both employ some able list stereotypes but at least the Catalan show tried, in some respects, to demonstrate the horrors of having a chronic condition. The American show made it look like a fashionable accessory to the usual problems of being a teen. I like the premise (which would most likely be a story as I am not a screen writer or playwright) but I don't want a fan fic or a direct rewrite. I'd like to tell the story with real Spoonies and real variety: non-hetero couples, differing gender concepts, differing sexualities, and --- most importantly --- real problems and triumphs and day-to-day accomplishments of Spoonies. I want to do this right, which is why I am asking for help. - which diseases and what DME - what types of experiences ( a day by day summary of a long hospital stay would be helpful; I was too little to remember much) - what kinds of people - what activities can/can't be done - what problems should be highlighted - which invisible disabilities It'll never see the light of day except perhaps here but I wanted something which reflected us: who we are, what we do, how we do it, and what happens with chronic illnesses and disabilities

For Dorie.  I helped her dread her hair after she decided to embrace her heritage.  We had recently found out she suffered years of persecution --- hair straightened and then curled "properly"; hair cut short because it was " nappy"; rude remarks from her foster parents about her skin and hygiene --- because the father she never knew was black.  Dreads are beautiful if done correctly in the traditional manner.  FYI, she most often smells like vanilla or fresh baked cookies.
