❝ hm ?? ❞ mind still shrouded in a haze fails to immediately recognize subdued sense of urgency. otherwise, marvin would not have spent any more than a second fighting eyelids still weighed down, vision straining through slow blinks against the darkness in an attempt to make sense of the sight before him. without the visual crutch of a flashing green, he would have certainly missed sheltered hand, fallen back to sleep before connecting the dots and processing son’s tone and — if one were to blink, it would be likely that they’d miss just how abruptly father’s expression shifts. there’s no stretching, no gradual shedding of drowsy daze as instinct and adrenaline overwhelm, marvin scrambling to sit up as though he’d been struck. ❝ jason, jesus !! ❞

“ forget it . ” he should never have thought to tell him , should have kept it hidden until it healed up or until someone noticed on their own –––– at least then his heart wouldn’t be thundering in his chest , waiting for the scolding he was sure he would get . yet he couldn’t be scolded if he wasn’t there . . . jesus , jason ! ! not the best response to give a frightened child ( especially not one who’s idea of ‘ father son time ’ had recently become sitting in separate rooms and talking as little as possible . ) and just like that he’s almost out of the room . almost . . . except that he pauses at the doorway , cradling his hand just a little tighter . “ you have to promise not to get mad . . . or tell mom . ”
