Sighting in a compound bow sight is not difficult, it is the backward version of sighting in a rifle with open sights. It’s a complex process and also time-consuming. 

In this article, I am going to discuss with you how to use compound bow sights. But before going to that let’s discuss what bow sights really are and types of the bow sights. 

Bow Sight

The bow sight is equipment mounted on the bow to ensure a better aim. These are similar to the scopes used in rifles. Sights are made to give the archer a better view of his target. When you shoot an arrow, you must want to hit on the bull’s eye. Bow sight helps you to do that. 

  Types of bow sights

How to knock an arrow

If you are learning archery or bow hunting then you would probably know that nocking an arrow is the 2nd step of archery. Some of you will think, nocking an arrow is so easy and why I am writing all these! But you would be amazed to know that some experienced archers struggle sometimes beside the beginners with this basic process. In this article, I am going to talk about how to get the arrow from a quiver and correctly set onto the bowstring.

The nocking point and the nock locator

Before I start, I would like to make you familiar with some words used in archery. Different archers use these words in different ways. I am writing this to make you better understand the post.

When someone put an arrow on the string, that’s called “nocking the arrow”. A nock locator or a string nock is a small piece of metal attached to the bowstring so that one can set a nocking point on the bow. When you set the nocking point on your bow and set the nock locator, then you will be able to attach your arrows at the same place every single time you shoot an arrow. Success and accuracy in archery depend on when you in the same way and from the same place.

Setting the nocking point is quite difficult. When you are using a rented bow in a shooting range, the range will set a nocking point on the bowstring for you. That’s a great help to you surely. For the beginners, they also use a rubbery thing which is called finger saver on the nock point. It helps to grip the arrow on the nocking point better.

Nocking the arrow

I hope you have practiced your stance very well and now you are kind of natural at this. Now you are ready to get an arrow. Now let’s follow the following steps: You have to hold the arrow shaft close to the nock that is behind the vanes Put the arrow shaft on the arrow rest. Rotate the shaft till the indexing vane pointed in the right direction. For recurve bow, the indexing vane should be pointing away from the riser. So we can say, rotate the shaft until the indexing vane comes between your body and riser. If you are a compound bow user then you will index the arrow directly depending on the arrow rest installed on your bow. When the indexing vane is rightly oriented, snap the nock of the arrow onto the bowstring under the nock locator. 

  If you are using a compound bow, then, when you are nocking an arrow on a bowstring with a D-Loop, the knock on the shaft goes between the upper and lower knot of the D-Loop. If there is a gap left after the arrow is snapped into position, the nock on the arrow shaft should be pushed toward the top of the D-Loop.

Safety Tips

When you are in a shooting range and you drop an arrow don’t try to pick it up. Even if an arrow falls from your hand on your feet don’t bend and try to pick it. Call the staff and he will pick it up for you. Most archery ranges have this kind of rules. They make this safety rule to keep you safe and they are very strict about this.

If you are confused about nocking the arrow or any other procedure then just stop and ask for help to any staff or experts around you. They would love to help you.

Keep an eye out for your center serving. On your bowstring, you'll see that there's some extra material right in the middle of the string, right around where the nock/finger saver is located. Over time, this material can fray or tatter, and that may mean it's time for a new bowstring.

 If you feel a bit awkward when nocking an arrow, don’t be upset. Most of the beginner archers take time to get perfection. The truth is every archer will develop their own skill or method of nocking the arrow. There is no particular rule to do this easily at the beginning. So keep calm and practice more and always follow the safety tips.
