NO OKAY THIS IS REALLY COOL SO SHUT UP AND LISTEN KIDS. Ancient China was super chill about homosexuality okay. Like we have gay emperors and feudal lords, lesbian princesses who were girlfriends with their serving maids, gay ass poets who wrote lots of poems about that one courtesan who played the guzheng so well. In fact homosexuality was so okay that in Shiji, which is basically the Bible of Ancient Chinese history, there is an entire section dedicated to the gay lovers of emperors. What’s the best part? All the laws and criticism about homosexuality in Ancient China were all about shit like prostitution and rape. These laws were outlawing homosexual stuff were all very specific. For example, there were laws banning male prostitution, but no laws against homosexuality. These laws were passed to stop the spread of prostitution and laws targeting prostitution in general were pretty common in Chinese history. There were also really strict laws about male rape. Rape was punishable by death, regardless of the gender of the victim. Rape a girl, you die. Rape a guy, you die. Have sex with a minor, you die regardless of whether it was consensual. The lightest sentence you could get was slavery where you were bound to the army. Also scholars wrote essays criticising the boyfriends of emperors, saying that they distracted the emperor from work blah blah blah but THEY ALSO DID THE SAME FOR THE CONCUBINES. That’s right - the issue wasn’t homosexuality but rather the hormones of the emperor. They didn’t care about the gender of the emperor’s favourite lover but rather the fact that the emperor was too horny to get shit done. “But WAIT, Modern China is a hardass about homosexuality!!!! How do you explain that!” Yes. That. That’s because of the late Qing years where Western influences entered the country and brought their gross ass homophobic attitudes with them. And the Qing government was so anxious to seem modern and be seen as equals to their Western counterparts. So they adopted Western ways and discarded their previous attitudes about homosexuality. Hence you have Modern China. So the next time someone tries to tell you that being LGBT is wrong because it goes against traditional Chinese values, tell them to go fuck themselves with 3000 years of Chinese queerness.

in so many ways, we keep going BACKWARDS. because pretty much ALL the major historical empires were, at minimum, *neutral* [and so many openly accepted] about homosexuality – Greece, Rome, Vikings, Aztec,China, and on and on and ON

i’m not a historian, but just as an amateur looking at this, it seems that the blame mostly lies at the feet of the Abrahamic faiths

which is NOT COOL, because it was mostly Christianity that caused it, and that’s SO VERY WRONG because it’s based on Leviticus – the over 600 ‘sins’ listed therein – *BUT CHRIST SAID THAT HE REPLACED ALL THE OLD LAWS*. Like, *literally*, all of Leviticus was supposed to be discarded; Christianity only has THREE Laws: 1) Love God 2) Love your fellow humans 3) *DO NOT JUDGE*

and yet somehow Christianity – and then Islam – started regressing, going fucking *backwards* and started applying all these things *that were no longer relevant according to Christ*. and this is why Gandhi once said something like [obviously this is paraphrased] “I like your Christ; it’s your Christians i dislike”. and i hate that. I’m not Christian, for so many reasons, but this is the biggest one – the fact that i so rarely meet people who claim to be Christian who *actually try to live up to the Christian ideals that Christ Himself espoused*

one of which was LOVING EVERYONE, and the other of which was NOT JUDGING. according to Christianity, NO ONE has the right to judge, let alone PUNISH [or try to ‘cure’, shudder] people who are LGBT+. THOU SHALL NOT JUDGE. *everyone* sins, according to Christianity, and no sin is worse than any other. so where do these people get off, spreading *HATE* through a religion of LOVE?!?!?! and infected every culture they come across with that same hate, even if the culture doesn’t become Christian [like China]

it makes me weep, sometimes. it makes me angry that i’m straight, because i feel guilty that i can do all the things LGBT+ people have fought for and mostly still can’t, not really; feel guilty that i don’t have to worry about someone trying to ‘cure’ or ‘convert’ me, that i don’t have to worry about hate crimes or someone killing me. i mean, yeah, i’m female, but i’m a STRAIGHT female, so…

and i’m done rambling/ranting. I just… we’ve come so far in so many OTHER social areas, WHY do we keep going BACKWARDS in this one??????

I'm an amateur too and I only know about Rome an Greece : homosexuality as we know it was not a thing. Marriage (between a man and a woman) was still expected.

In Greece pederasty was definitely not homosexuality : it's the relationship between an adult man and his student.

In Rome it's even better (not really) same sex relationships are between a master and his slave. Being passive is definitely forbidden for free men. It's mandatory for slaves and even if he was freed he'd be expected to keep that role as a "service" to his ex master.

In Persia you had something similar between masters and eunuch.

And women in all of this? They could never become a citizen. They had to stay home and needed a tutor for everything. If they were respectable they were never called by their name but after the name of their close male relatives. So female homosexuality? Never heard of it.

They could leave their homes for religious purposes or, for the not rich, to sell their products maybe. No chilling outside with some mistress. Your husband could kill you for cheating anyway. The only not married women were prostitutes.

I'm not an expert, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

This kind of stories are cute and heartwarming but even if they are true they are only talking about the elite. Of course the emperor could do what he wanted. Of course same sex attraction existed. But it was not as widely accepted as you seem to think.

Abrahamic religions definitely fucked things up. But we're better today than we've ever been, in western societies at least. It's fucked up I know, cause we still have a good way to go. And religions are trying to keep us still.

This Big Boy is a Brahma, the largest breed of chicken. They’re also one of the gentlest and tamest chickens out there, a bit like the Great Danes of poultry. He lives in Kosovo with his (very proud) owner Fitim Sejfija, and two hens, where he is a good and gentle man and very loved.

Brhamas typically don’t get quite this big (He’s 16.5 lbs and almost 3 feet tall. most are closer to 14 lbs and 2′6″) but they’re really nice and cuddly birds.
