"I wouldn’t. I’ve hurt you and everyone else enough already." He says, avoiding eye contact.

He’d never really gotten over her despite all that could’ve been with Cess and now he’s back he knows more harm would come out of it than good even if he could touch with all that he did.

"Kevin..." she frowns. She wants to comfort him, somehow, some way... but she's not sure how, so she stands there for a moment, unsaid words hanging in the air. "...everyone makes mistakes, sometimes. You've always been a good friend to me. I don't know much about everything that's happened, but I do know..." She bites her bottom lip, and then finally seems to gain a enough self confidence to talk without pause.

"...if you're back alive, then you shouldn't waste your second chance. And I want to be there for you, if that's alright."

He smiled at her sadly. She didn’t know what it meant, what sins he had committed. “Yeah. I was sneaking in to help people who couldn’t be helped. It’s amazingly sad the number of people who won’t let you help them if you tell them you’re a mutant.” He shook his head. “I was running away. Hiding.”

"I guess some things are the same no matter where you go... I just wish more people understood. Being a mutant, it's not... we're not all bad." She pulled her good arm across herself, grabbing the elbow of her injured arm lightly as if to hug herself. "But at least you got to help those that would accept it."

She blinked a few times, and her brows knit together, "Running away? But from what...? I know that I was in a coma, but our other friends would've been there for you if you needed anything, right?"

Her voice kept wavering. Some bit of borrowed knowledge told him that she was definitely, definitely faking that rasp. It fluctuated too much, and the sweet undertones that bled through from her real voice were… nervous? Maybe. Something else… he let himself take in her body language a little more, hints of… uncertainty.

He knew her from somewhere, he was sure of it. Positive now.

"No need to thank me, I’m at least half responsible for our collision course. Besides, I know how much it can suck to carry home an armload of groceries on your own." He held out a hand with a smile, "Let me take some of your bags for you, are we heading this way…?" He gestured in the direction that she had been walking.

"It was mostly me... I don't really watch where I'm going, sometimes..." She could feel her own nerves making her hands shake as she offered him two of the four bags she was carrying. This was a mistake, letting David walk her home. But if she recalled her acceptance of the offer now, she could only imagine how suspicious it would look.

Besides, she really had missed him. He was such a good friend...maybe it wouldn't hurt if she let him know it was her...? No. She was supposed to be laying low, even from their friends. Besides, how weird would it look if she came out with it now, after pretending not to know him for the last few minutes?

"Thank you for helping me." She nodded her head to say yes, and started moving in the direction she had just been going. They really were only a few blocks away from the apartment...she hoped that she could keep her cool that long.

She nods, "But you're not anymore. And that's... that's all that matters. I could hug you, I'm just...I'm happy you're okay." She wasn't upset about her arm, not anymore. She was mostly trying to keep it out of his view so that he wouldn't have to think about it.

Hearing something that sounds awfully like her name causes her to look up, and she’s sure she catches a glimpse of him as he turns around. “K-Kevin?!” She moves forward, “Is it really you…?”

He turns around. He’s telling himself not to stay, not to talk but… "Yes. It’s me."

"You're okay, then! It's such a relief, they said you were dead..." She smiles at him, shifting her damaged arm behind herself.

"Normal now." He kept his voice light. "I prefer the gold though." He smiled at her curiosity. "Woke up…" Oh from being dead, he thought. “Yeah I was… I was wandering the middle east at that point I think. Sneaking into war-torn countries.”

"The gold does suit you better, but this really doesn't look too bad." Realizing she was still touching his arm, she drew back her hand with a nervous smile. "You were sneaking in..." that smile grew, "...to heal people, right? I should've guessed you'd be off doing something good for the world. And here I've just been hiding in an old apartment..."

Her voice. There was something familiar about it— that forced rasp certainly did mask it some. But he knew it was forced. The first time she’d spoken, she hadn’t sounded like that. She’d sounded…young. And…bright. With maybe a hint of some sort of social shyness that he couldn’t quite place from the few words she’d said.

Not enough for him to form a full guess.

His hand lingered just a moment when she took the bread, as if some proximity might give him a better idea of how this girl could possibly be so—

"New to the city, huh? It can be sort of overwhelming, when you first arrive. Might sound kind of crazy from a guy that just bumped into you, but do you need someone to help you home…? You’ve got your hands full."

It could come across as a little creepy, some stranger offering to escort you. But he needed more time. There was something way too familiar about her.

Offering to walk her home when she said she was new to the city, same old David. It didn't even occur to her to think that maybe he was trying to get more time to figure her out--although it did occur to her that she should probably turn him down. Kevin had told her a million times that it would be better--safer--if they stayed away from their old friends.

But she missed everyone so much. It couldn't hurt to just let him walk her home, could it...? Besides, she did have a couple more bags than were easy to carry with her one good hand.

"I uh..." She smiled, trying to keep masking her voice, although it really was a horrible attempt, "...that would be very kind of you, thank you very much. I only live a couple blocks away from here."
