Belief is Addictive and We’re All Adicts
Belief is addictive. It’s why everyone who has their beliefs challenged with new ideas or facts behaves like a drug addict.
By believing in something, you make it harder to not to believe in it, and vice versa. Belief is a self limiting behavior.
In my experience, in order for someone to accept a radical new idea, they need to be ready to hear it, but if they have their own beliefs, that’s an difficult obstacle to overcome.
If you need an example of this, look no further than opinions of Trump. Or Obama. Those who like and admire them make excuses for their bad behavior, especially if they identify these men as being on “their side” in some kind of apocalyptic struggle.
The problem with this is not that people have opinions, but that it blocks out contrary thoughts, and prevents people from seeing deeper truths about the complex nature of our political system (namely that it’s an Intelligence Agency world, and we’re all just pawns in it).
A related concept is the issue of pride. Pride in your identity or pride in your “knowledge,” it’s all illusion. The Buddhist were right about this: identity is a fiction. So is thinking you know things.
Incidentally, pride is a sin. Something not lost on me during the recent June Pride Month. And you might say, “that’s not the same thing,” but it is. Its a self reinforcing belief delusion propped up by a system that wants to sell you products and go nowhere political movements.
This leads to the inevitable joke that August should be “Wrath Month.” And why not? That too is an identity driven behavior, filled with opportunity for profit.
The solution is to all this is to neither believe, nor disbelieve, to refuse to make final judgments, and to suspend the ego’s knee jerk identification with certain groups at the expense of others.
