Walter was entranced by the dark shadows writhing underneath the car. He felt Mira pushing against his legs, knew that he should turn and run, but it seemed like he was rooted to the ground. A long shape dislodged itself from the darkness. The creature stretched and squirmed out over the sidewalk, pulling itself up slowlyā it could almost pass for human, but the greasy grey flesh that covered it was far from anything Walter had ever seen before.
It banged against the bumper of the car on its way out, and the sharp noise shook Walter out of his reverie. He backed away, eyes growing wide as he took in the twisting monstrosity crawling to its knees.
Mira made a choking sound, repulsed by the sheer look of the monster. Definately not human. She was relieved when Walter started moving, but not fast enough, definately not fast enough. āStop looking at it, just run!ā She shouted, nudging him one last time before she turned back to face the monster.
In a flash of movement she had moved away from Walter, only a few feet, placing herself dead center between the monster and the boy. A low, dangerous sort of growl sounded from her throat, but predictably it seemed to ignore her. She looked between Walter and the monster, realizing that though itās gait was slow, the boy was practically frozen. She needed to do something to buy them more time.
Her paws were carrying her forward before she could even think about what she was doing. In a fluid movement she had barreled into the thing, aiming to take hold of itās leg and drag it back to the ground, hoping that Walter had finally started to put some distance between himself and the monster. The only thing she could think was Oh my god it tastes disgusting. Not even worried that it might actually have some method of selfĀ defense. Ā
Walter backed up faster, shock and fear written plainly across his face. Mira... the dog had launched itself at the monster. What a good dog. Walter felt tears welling up in his eyes as he turned on his heel and took off as fast as he could-- away from the monster, away from everything. Mother. Seeing Mother would make all this better--
He knew it should have been too good to be true to find a real friend. People like him didn't get friends. All they got was pain.
Walter tried to block out the sounds of the monster and Mira in the distance behind him.
