It’s still a teen goth’s dreamland... doomed as anywhere but older psychogeography of the built environment adding an extra layer... It is also a beautiful place. New Orleans was the first place I lived that had the history of white supremacy and slavery on its surface in an undeniable way, you cannot ignore it. It helped me understand what this country was built on as it was presented on a platter to accept or be made furious by (it also offers its gumbo pot but be wary of that propaganda). It is a place that has its history embodied in its present. A magical realism that is actively informative. The only other place that surpasses it (that I’ve experienced) is Mexico City, as you have a Catholic cathedral built on top of a mesoamerican temple to the gods of war and rain in the center of the city.
