Teen French expressions

For if you want to make hip young friends.

Disclaimer: French people complain a lot. A lot. Don’t be surprised if 90% of these expressions are complaining.

Non mais oh - say this if someone does something mildly annoying and you want to express your shock and distaste.

Tu me fais chier - (alt. tu me fais chier, là.) literally ‘you make me shit’. means you’re pissing me off.

Carrément - translates to ‘squarely’. Means ‘literally’. If someone tells you something surprising or annoying, you can answer simply “ah carrément.” see: tu me fais carrément chier.

J’hallucine / je rêve - are you annoyed by something? say these.

C’est pas possible - a classic. anything bad happens - c’est pas possible. There is no cheese left? It’s not possible. I’m hallucinating. This is a burden on me that solely I can bear I cannot believe this is happening.

Ça commence à me gaver - I’m starting to get real sick of this. see: Ça commence carrément a me gaver là, putain.

T’es relou - verlan slang for ‘lourd’ meaning someone’s heavy, personality-wise. They’re tedious.

Ça me saoûle / ça me gonfle - similar to gaver, means something’s pissing you off, you’re sick of it.

Grave - totally.

C’est clair - totally/that’s clear. Like ‘claro’ in spanish. “Justine elle est trop relou” “C’est clair. Elle me fait chier.”

J’en ai marre - I’m sick of this.

J’en ai ras le bol - I’m sick of this.

J’en ai ras le cul - I’m sick of this (vulgar).

(J’en ai) Rien à battre - I don’t give a damn.

(J’en ai) Rien à foutre - I don’t give a fuck.

C’est bon, là. -  That’s enough.

Perso, euh, - “Personally,” generally used at the start of a complaining sentence, to express how personal the matter is to you. Perso, euh, c’est bon là. J’en ai ras le cul.

Rôh là - general expression of distaste. Le longer the rôh, the more annoyed you are. Rôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôh, c’est quoi ce bordel.

C’est quoi ce bordel ? - translates to “what’s this brothel”, means “what’s this shit?!”

C’est de la merde - It’s shit.

C’est une blague ? - Is this a joke?

Idem - ditto

J’ai la dalle - I’m hungry

Ça caille - It’s freezing

Ouf - two meanings 1. phew or 2. verlan for “fou”, meaning crazy (as a noun or adjective). “Kévin, c’est un ouf! Il fait du vélo sans casque!” “Ouais carrément, c’était un truc de ouf!”

Kévin - there’s a running joke that all the young delinquents seem to be called Kévin.

Crever - slang for “to die”. Va crever, connard!

Connard/Connasse - c*nt, but a lot less vulgar in french peoples eyes

And finally,

T’es con. No English translation can express the power behind the words “t’es con”. While it may sort of translate to “you’re a c*nt/idiot”, it expresses something much deeper. You really are a god damn fool.

Showing realisation in Korean sentences

These are 2 similar ways to show realisation at new information. They are a good way to make your sentences more natural and to get across the right feelings. They have a slight rhetorical questioning tone to them as if you are thinking to yourself ‘Oh, it’s like this isn’t it?’

Adding -네(요) : Add this straight to the verb/adj stem at the end of your sentence to express mild surprise in an admiring way. Slightly talking to oneself. For example:

고양이가 귀엽네! - The cat is cute! (cuter than your thought, you just saw the cat and are saying this in admiration like; isn’t it so cute?)

한국어 잘 말하네요 - You’re good at Korean (better than one expected, someone just spoke Korean and the speaker is complimenting them like; oh your quite good at Korean aren’t you?)

사진을 잘 찍네요 - You’re good at photography (the speaker is seeing someone’s photography like; Oh that’s a good photo you took isn’t it?)

Adding -구나/군요 : very similar, expresses more mundane surprise or neutral realisation like ‘I guess I didn’t realise that was the case’. More talking to oneself. for example:

미국에서 그게 아주 큰 문제이구나 - Oh that thing is quite a big problem in America (like; I guess I didn’t realise it was such a big problem?)

어제 생일이었군요 - Oh, yesterday was your birthday (like; Oh, I guess I didn’t know it was your birthday)

구렇구나 … - Oh I see, so that’s how it is… (After you realise/are told something)

~아/어/해야 하다/되다- To have to/to must/should

To create the meaning of ‘to have to/to must/should’ you can add ~아/어/해야 하다/되다 to the stem of the word at the end of the sentence. The concept of choosing whether to add ~아/어/해 to the verb is the same as present tense conjugation 

가다 - To go 가 + 아야 해요 = 가야 해요 - To have to go (Vowel contraction occurs here)

먹다 - To eat  먹 + 어야 해요 = 먹어야 해요 - To have to eat 

공부하다 - To study  공부 + 해야 해요 = 공부해야 해요 - To have to study  It is possible to replace 하다 with 되다. There is no difference in the meaning, but 되다 is more commonly used colloquially.   

저는 뭐 해야 돼요? - What should I do?

먹고 싶으면 요리를 해야 돼요 - If you want to eat you have to cook

저는 저의 고양이에게 먹이를 줘야 돼요 - I have to feed my cat 

대학교에 가고 싶다면 많이 공부해야 돼요 - If you want to go to university you should study a lot 

내일 시험이 있어서 열심히 공부해야 돼요 - I have to study hard because I have a test tomorrow

저는 뉴스를 들어야 돼요 - I should listen to the news 

친구랑 놀아야 돼요 - I have to hang out with my friend

20분 후에 가야 될 거예요 - We will have to go in 20 minutes

~ㄹ/을 수 있어요/없어요 - To have the ability to/ to not have the ability to

By adding ~ㄹ/을 수 있어요/없어요 to the end of a verb stem it creates the meaning of ‘to be able to/to not be able to’ or ‘to have the ability to/to not have to ability to’. ~ㄹ is added to verb stems that don’t have a 받침 while ~을 is added to those that do. 

할 수 있어요 - To have the ability to do it (can do it) 할 수 없어요 - To not have the ability to do it (can’t do it) 

먹을 수 있어요 - To have the ability to eat 먹을 수 없어요 - To not have the ability to eat 

저는 숙제를 할 수 없어요 - I can’t do my homework 

저는 그것을 할 수 있어요 - I can do that 

저는 그것을 빨리 할 수 없어요 - I can’t do that quickly 

내일 밤에 만날 수 있어요? - Can you meet tomorrow night?

저는 고양이에게 먹이를 줄 수 있어요 - I can feed the cat 

저는 한국어를 이해할 수 없어요 - I can’t understand Korean

~는 것 - Changing verbs into nouns

~는 것 - Changes a verb into a noun / allows verbs to describe nouns. It can be translated as a way of saying ‘doing something/the act of doing something’ ‘the thing you do/what you do’ or ‘the fact that you do’

하는 것 - noun form of to do, can be translated as the act of doing

가는 것 - noun form of to go, can be translated as the act of going

먹는 것 - noun form of to eat, can be translated as the act of eating

Because 것 is a noun (meaning thing) it is possible to substitute it for other nouns. For example:

밥을 먹고 있는 여자는 예뻐요 - The woman who is eating rice is pretty 저는 한국어 공부하는 친구를 원해요 - I want a friend who studies Korean

Other examples:

시간이 있을 때 뭐 하는 것을 좋아해요? - What do you like to do when you have time?
 저는 한국어 공부하는 것을 좋아해요 - I like to study Korean 저는 영화 보는 것을 좋아해요 - I like watching movies 저는 샤이니 노래를 듣는 것을 좋아해요 - I like listening to Shinee 저는 맛있는 음식을 먹는 것을 좋아해요 - I like to eat delicious food 로사는 제가 그녀의 집에 가는 것을 원하지 않아요 - Rosa doesn’t want me to go to her house 저는 밥을 먹을 것이에요 - I will eat rice 제가 보고 있는 영화는 재미있어요 - The film I am watching is fun 일찍 일어나는 것은 어려워요 - Waking up early is hard 학교에 가는 것은 재미없어요 - Going to school is boring

There are ways to contract ~는 것 when adding a particle:

는 것이 = 는 게

는 것 = 는 건

는 것 = 는 걸

When using past tense ~ㄴ/은 것 should be added. ~은 is added when there is a 받침, and ~ㄴ is added when the stem ends in a vowel.   When using future tense ~ㄹ/을 것 should be added. ~을 is added when there is a 받침, and ~ㄹ is added when the stem ends in a vowel.

Really/Very/Too

These words are useful when you want to be more expressive or improve your sentences:

너무 - Too 많이 - Many, alot 아주 - Very (used more in written Korean) 조금 - A little bit, a bit (sometimes shortened to 쫌) 진짜 - Really, truly (less formal than 정말)  정말 - Really, truly

아주 예뻐요! - It’s very pretty! 

조금만 주세요! - Please only give me a little bit!

커피 아이스크림은 진짜 맛있어요 - Coffee ice cream is really delicious!

정말 이상해요 - It’s really strange 

바다는 너무 시원해요 - The sea is very cool/refreshing

Hi, you can say ‘because’ in a number of ways: we have a post on (기) 때문에You can also use 아/어/해서 to add reason - this is similar to 그래서 so it can be translated as ‘therefore’ instead of because. 저는 피곤해서 잤어요 - I slept because I was tired/ I was tired therefore I slept 저는 배고파서 먹고 있어요 - I am eating because I am hungry / I am hungry therefore I am eating You can’t, however, use this when you want to say let’s or use imperative sentences 저는 지금 공부하니까 우리 영화 내일 봐요 -Becasue I am studying right now lets see the film tomorrow This way can also be used to end sentences (just add 요 to make it more formal) an example could be is someone asked you to do something and you said no 아까 했으니까요 - Because I did it earlierTo say ‘by the way’ you can say either ‘그런데’ or ‘그나저나’ 

And to say ‘please treat me well’ there are a few variations all with pretty similar meanings of please be nice/treat me well… so on 저를 친절하게 해주세요 - please be kind to me 저를 잘 부탁드립니다 - please take good care of me 저를 잘 해줘요 - please be good to me
