Charity Spotlight: Ascend Together: The Gambia

One of my favorite travel experiences of the past year was visiting Ascend Together in The Gambia. Ascend Together successfully develops basketball and education programs for young women and men in The Gambia, with the inclusion of disabled men and women. The power that sports can bring to a community is one that cannot be ignored.

While visiting The Gambia, I was lucky enough to be in the audience for the 2015 All Star Game. Ascend Together provides education and practice as well as uniforms and basketball shoes to this amazing community of basketball players. 

Currently, they are fundraising for the year.

There’s a first time for everything. I can’t imagine a more beautiful place to take golf lessons. Varadero Golf Club is the first 18 hole Golf Course in Cuba. It also sits on a beautiful cliff overlooking the ocean.

Stay: Stay at Hydra Hotel, a fabulous boutique hotel tucked away in the narrow streets above the town. You'll need to have a donkey help you with your luggage. Yes, a donkey.

Eat: Omilos is by far the most stunning restaurant in Hydra. Surrounded by clear blue water, Omilos used to bring in the jet set crowd when it was a nightclub called Lagoudera in the 60s and 70s. Everyone from Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, and Maria Callas traveled to Hydra to visit Lagoudera.

Drink: Grab a drink at Pirate Bar!

Experience: Live music all over the island, delicious Greek food, a dip in the water, and absolute bliss.

TRAVEL GUIDE - BIG BEAR LAKE, CALIFORNIA: USA

Swim: Avoid The Swim Beach and instead head to China Island for a swim in the lake. From here you can also jump off the rocks (watch out for the water level) on China Island and into the water.

Hike: For great views of the lake, and a perfect summer work out, hike Knickerbocker trail.

Eat: Head over to Teddy Bear Restaurant. Do yourself a favor and order the salmon tacos with citrus.

Drink: For a nice cocktail during the day, and some delicious seafood, stop by Evergreen Restaurant (Grab a seat on the patio overlooking the lake).

Experience: Murray's. Grab a drink, sit back and watch some epic karaoke. Tip: take a look at what they've got in the claw machine.

One of the best ways to explore California is to take a drive along the Pacific Coast Highway. Along the PCH you will find Big Sur.
