Ramy dying is the worse part of this book what the fuck
R. F. Kuang had to kill Altan off, because his relationship with Chaghan would definitely put rinezha in the backseat for the next two books. Just imagine 1200 more pages of tragic gay love story. A true paradise (which none of them will ever get into, though)
another hug would not fix them. but it would definitely help
Harrow's disdain for spirit magic will never not be funny to me. Like in her world there's literally an alternate level of reality wherein an entire eldritch space river teeming with thousands of dead people that may or may not lead to hell/the afterlife exists, an eldritch space river where you can forcibly bend reality into anything you can imagine. Which Harrow is apparently very good at.
Nearly all of the craziest shenanigans in the locked tomb involve deviously fucked-up spirit magic shenanigans, it is probably the most plot relevant strain of necromancy in the book and ms bone adept is just like ewwww spirit magic so boring more like fucking nerd magic I could never.
the appeal of Harrow Nova is that she is the ONLY person who could be more pathetic than my sopping wet beloved creature Harrowhark Nonagesimus. the product of a genocide that didn't even work. all of the guilt and none of the gain. disowned by the very parents who made her a war crime. she's not even cavalier primary - she's second to Ortus. on a planet with two fighting-age cavaliers total.
just when you think Nonagesimus couldn't get any more pitiful, we are introduced to a version of her that is objectively worse off. but -- and this is key -- in meeting Nova we see that there is some indomitable core to Harrow's spirit, common across iterations, that will persist in living and succeeding. no matter her circumstances, a Harrow is never going to sit around feeling sorry for herself. she is vicious. she will train to be the best in her field and she WILL be a prodigy, whatever that field might be. and she will not go gentle into that good night!!
tlt fandom does not pay enough attention to John's (and Augustine's) misogynist violence towards Mercy. The constant condescension, shaming, teasing her into a rage and then acting like her upset in response is ridiculous theatrics, for TEN THOUSAND YEARS. Calling her unparalleled expertise a parlor trick. Augustine assigning her - not asking her! - to seduce John with him for dios apate minor. "I hated the sexy parties," Mercymorn says, and I can absolutely imagine why! Augustine says that dios apate major was planned for five hundred years, kiriona is 19, pregnancy is ten months, that's nearly 520 years of pasting on bare-minimum tolerance for a man who coerced your best friend into an ungrievable suicide that fuels your immortality while he nitpicks and pokes and prods and demeans and teases and condescends to you and encourages everyone around you to do the same... and then he fuckin explodes you. It's giving classic nuclear family interpersonal violence where ganging up on your Dumb Bitch Mother is the bonding past time for Daddy and the kids. hashtag justice for Mercymorn

my fucking squire died so I’m stuck in this stupid armor
I see it a lot in my students that the ONLY mode they can engage with literature on is one in which they either say it's good because it's "relatable" or it's bad because they "can't relate to it" as well, and I feel like this is a symptom of the same problem. An unwillingness to engage with fiction outside of its ability to be a mirror to your specific worldview and set of morals. But art doesn't exist to give you moral purity badges--it's a mode of expression that produces conversations between artists and readers. And to engage in those converesations on an adult level you need to learn to process the discomfort of flawed human realities productively.
Is always "you're cute" and never "I love you wholly. I love you eternally. I love you so dearly it frightens me. I fear I could not live without you. I could see your face every morning upon waking for ten thousand years and still look forward to the next as though it were the first.”
all the fanart of rook as a white man is a criminal. he’s repeatedly described as brown throughout the book
"Are you in love with me?" I blurted out. A terrible silence followed. Rook didn't turn around. "Please say something."
He rounded on me. "Is that so terrible? You say it as though it's the most awful thing you can imagine. It isn't as though I've done it on purpose. Somehow I've grown fond of your--your irritating questions, and your short legs, and your accidental attempts to kill me."
I recoiled. "That's the worst declaration of love I've ever heard!"

You are like a living rose among wax flowers. We may last forever, but you bloom brighter and smell sweeter, and draw blood with your thorns.
I miss them
