A few days later...
-This isn’t right Dami, you know it.
She laid beside him, breathless, hair completely messed up and her make up smudged because of their prior activities. Still, to him she looked aethereal. Like a fairy dressed in the moonlight, her y/e/c, with a shadow of sadness, looking at him expectantly.
-It’s over. I ended it. We are free, amore.
He knows that these are the words she is craving to hear. Her whole body, soul and mind pleading him to do the right thing. To choose her finally. To prove her that there is no one else for him, that she is it for him. Just like he is it for her.
Yet, once again, he cannot give her what he knows she desires with her whole heart. It’s funny, his heart could never say no to her, yet his actions do. He hasn’t plucked up the courage to end things between him and his girlfriend and what is he doing instead? He is leading her on, pretending that their relationship isn’t failing, pretending that he hasn’t fallen out of love with her. It’s shitty, he knows it. However, this doesn’t mean that he wants to see the rejection in her eyes, the abandonment, the broken promises spoken once full of love and sincerity.
But his heart? His heart is another thing. His heart was given away to Y/N the first time he kissed her in the rooftop of their hotel in Greece. They were alone, two lost souls gazing the endless blue of the Aegean. And when his lips had met hers it had felt like everything else had suddenly vanished and they were the only ones left, or at least the only ones that mattered. His chest was about to combust, and his stomach felt as if he had swallowed a thousand fireworks. He, who could transform to lyrics everything he ever felt, was now stunned speechless. There was no way to describe the way he was feeling, like he was the happiest man on earth yet the most desperate one. Desperate because if he opened his eyes and she wasn’t there anymore, his world would crumble to pieces and there would be nothing to mend his broken heart. And it was at that moment that he knew. He knew that no matter what would come their way, she would be the one to hold his heart forever. All he could do was hope that she didn’t hold it too far away from him.
A few days ago, there was nothing in the world that would stop him from being with her, if she asked him to. There was nothing that he wouldn’t give, nothing he would be afraid to lose, nothing that he wouldn’t leave behind, if it meant he would get to hold her again and in exchange be held by her. Her arms was his heaven, his safe place, his sacred temple, and he would always be thankful that of all people he was the luckiest one to find his home there, in her arms, in her heart.
Yet now that the ball was on his court he felt as if he couldn’t move. He could see her running past him but he was stuck in place, unable to chase her. And he would lose her, he was aware of that, just like he was aware that if that happened, if he lost her, if he threw away this second chance, there would be nothing left for him in this world. Because she was his world.
-I am going to take a shower and then get back to my place, she said without looking at him.
She didn’t want to look at him. She loved him with all her heart and more, yet at this instant he made her feel weak, used, not enough. And for that she didn’t know if she would ever be able to forgive him. She knew what she was worth. She knew that she deserved better than being the other woman in his relationship. She knew that she should stay away from him, unless he came clear with his girlfriend. Yet she wasn’t powerful enough to do any of that. Because the moment their lips would connect she would forget everything else. He was the only one that mattered, the only one who could make her feel this way, the only one she wanted and her thumping heart made sure to remind her exactly that.
-Amore, no. You can stay here.
It was a plea, they both knew it. But the hard, cold stare she was giving him was proof that he needed to do better. To be better.
-Please stay, Y/N. Don’t leave me, amore.
And by the softening look in her eyes and the sigh that left her lips he knew that was a battle won.
-Okay, okay. But I am still gonna take that shower.
A passing beat. Was that an invitation? There was only one way to find out.
-Would you like some company then? Showering together saves water, you know. His cheeky response was immediate, accompanied by that smirk that made her knees weak.
Motherfucker, he knew she could never resist him and he was having fun with it.
-Oh is that so? An eyebrow raised. So you’re suggesting it for environmental reasons, huh?
Her effort to be serious was obviously failing and his whole-hearted laughter that followed was the proof.
-Oh cara mia, you are so cute when you’re trying to be mean. You’re lucky I love you so much, he said laughing. The crinkles by his eyes making him look irresistibly cute.
And the look on her face when he said these words, he swore he would never forget it. Her beautiful y/e/c eyes looking up at him as if he just offered her the world. He would; all she had to do was ask.
-Hmm, I see, she said smiling.
And good God, that smile could be the last thing he would see before dying and he would be happy. That bright smile was the reason he got through all those dreadful days they were apart. Just the memory of this smile was enough to keep him going, with the secret hope that there would come a time he would see it again, and even better it would be for him. Just for him.
-For the record, I love you too, she said cheekily, all the previous tension between them dispersed.
And in that moment he was sure his heart stopped. The whole world stopped and all he could see was her. His love, his soul, his heart. Yes, she was always the one to hold his heart, but now, after all, she was holding it close to him and he could feel both of their hearts beating as one. As they always had.
-What? Are you coming or not? Her voice was coming from the bathroom. He could still hear the smile etched on her face.
-Yeah, yeah baby. Give me a sec and I am coming.
Without even thinking he picked up his phone and opened the messages. It was now or never. If he didn’t do it this time, he never would and then he would lose her again and this time for good. No, he couldn’t risk it. Not for a deteriorating relationship, with someone he had no feelings for anymore. It was time to leave that behind, his future was hopeful and bright just like his girl. He was no longer afraid of it, just excited to see what it would bring them.
“Hey what’s up? Are you free this evening? We need to talk.”
