Mockingbird #4
“Are we REALLY going to do this right now, Clint?” Jane asked, having heard the crashing sound from her own room down the hall. Standing in his doorway with arms crossed over her chest, it became clear to her that the shelf had fallen – and he couldn’t seem to get it back up.
Although Clint Barton was the type of person to reject help whenever it was offered to him – his inflated ego becoming a real problem in times of need, Jane knew that anyone could notice he was in need of some assistance. And even though he might slightly resent her for going against his wishes – Jane liked to think he was grateful; deep, deep, deep down inside of him.
At his wincing glare, which Jane easily replicated the by squinting her amber eyes and screwing together her brows and button nose in a teasing manner, before moving forward towards him. She placed her hands on the opposite end of the shelf gesturing for him to push in her direction. “Let’s not stand here all day please.”
clint sighed. he knew he wouldn’t be able to get himself out of it, once jane was involved. as soon as she parted her lips, said a few words ( he caught them by lip-reading, just barely in time ), clint knew that he was in trouble. it had always been like that; jane would always be there to protect him, even though it made sense for it to be the other way around. ‘ whatever, MOM. ’ he grumbled.
‘ i don’t want you hurting your back, though. you know how old ladies get -- i don’t want you to have to join the disabled club after this. it’s not as fun as it seems, i swear. ’ in all honestly, clint will always love jane, from the bottom of his heart. she’s just slightly less tolerable when in the mood to soccer-mom him, even though he secretly enjoys it.
clint pushed towards her, feeling the weight of the shelf finally beginning to budge. ‘ christ, jane, have you been working out or something?? ’ he commented. clint honestly couldn’t tell if it was him pushing most of the weight, or the tinier woman in front of him.

get me ( for darcy !! )
the ground rattled as he dodged to the left, missing the fiery bullet sent from the chamber of an alien’s gun by what could be perceived as the width of a hair. ‘ SHIT. ’ he growled, the bullets continuing to zip by. ‘ i don’t know about you, but i’m thinkin’ we blow this popsicle stand, darce. ’ clint sent an arrow in the direction of the ammo, watching in the corner of his eye as it curved to pierce through a handful of the little buggers. he sent another into the ground a couple yards away, to a group of aliens’ content. they snickered in their odd hissing dialect -- god it was disturbing -- until the arrow exploded, probably incinerating each and every one of them. clint wasn’t watching, and frankly, he didn’t care. he was multi-tasking, HARD-CORE.
his eyes scanned the battlefield, watching things crash, burn, and crumple over on themselves. they landed on darcy, conveniently, who was standing within reaching distance. clint squinted as an alien approached swiping its claws just inches away from her face. he sent an arrow straight towards its eye, not entirely hearing its squeal of pain, but feeling it as its facial expression violently transitioned. ‘ we -- YOU -- are ditching this shit show, right now. let’s get out of here. ’

clint’s jaw clenched out of frustration as the skinny kid wrapped his arms around him. of course, while he aimed for the soulless tin-man exterior, he had a heart of gold beating furiously inside his chest as the much younger boy sought refuge in his rather hairy arms. he began to awkwardly pat billy on the back soothingly and.. well, failing. as usual. ‘ HEY, kiddo, can i get you anything?? a glass of water?? another person to hug?? ’
I promise you it feels worse.

billy had been standing there fore a moment, watching clint clearly struggling with the shelf. the dark haired witch had been moving through rooms that hadn’t been cleared out yet and doing JUST THIS. – moving broken pieces out of the way, placing them in corners until they found something better to do with them. it wasn’t a hard task, but it was a way to keep himself busy while everyone waited for a plan.
AND HE HOPED IT WOULD COME SOON. he wasn’t sure he could take too much of this. he didn’t like the idea that he wasn’t able to contact the rest of his team. it meant something was wrong, and that was a reality he didn’t want to believe in. he swallowed, giving the older male another moment before he stepped in to intervene.
‘ that’s why i’m not asking. ’ billy held up a hand, and blue light enveloped the shelf and raised it off clint’s shoulders. ‘ where do you want it ? ’
he could already feel the shelf sliding off the slippery mess that were his palms. he couldn’t even lift a freaking bookcase without working up a sweat. of course, it took clint by surprise when the thing decided to magically hover mid-air, away from his weak ass. that only left a few suspects behind the levitation, so clint was mildly annoyed to discover that his prediction wastrue, and that one of kate’s friends was holding up the goddamn shelf for him, a grown man who was perfectly capable. or at least, he had convinced himself so.
‘ you and katie are so alike. don’t listen to a goddamn thing i say. ’ clint murmured, mostly to himself. ‘ just.. put it over there in the corner. i’m too embarrassed to even look at it. ’ he directed, watching billy’s face for any required lip-reading. ‘ speaking of kate, have you uh– seen her?? i’m a little worried that she’s lying out there somewhere under a crushed building, which should probably make me happy, but i might be starting to miss the little firecracker. don’t tell her i said that. ’
’ it’s not .. that’s .. NO. that’s not a thing. ’ peter shook his head, scrunching his nose. peter bit his lip, people kept bringing her up. he was worried about her. nervously, peter rubbed his left thumb back and forth across the crook of his pointer finger, a small fidget to distract himself. ‘ besides, i still need to find her. ’
he looked up when clint spoke his final answer and nodded, ‘ okay well, less hypothetically – .. there’s this girl i know and she kind of needs a place to crash. ’ this girl i know. that felt weird. ‘ she’s not exactly going to be able to help us out but, i don’t want to leave her out there. ’
‘ whatever helps you sleep at night. just keep your eyes on tony -- i wouldn’t put it past him. ’ clint suggested with a lazy shrug, stating the obvious. sometimes he wished he had the suave personality of tony stark -- but then again, he really didn’t. and he would never admit to the fact that he was jealous of tony’s magnetism. clint was just weak when it came to women. he cleared his throat, for a more serious tone. ‘ don’t worry, kid. i’m sure she’ll turn up. ’ stifling a smile, clint remembered that the two of them had one thing in common, if not more: they had both lost their parents at a really young age. he wondered what life would have been like, had he been raised by an aunt may figure. she clearly made damn sure to give the kid spirit. that was one thing clint always seemingly lacked.
‘ spidey’s got a girlfriend? good for you, kid. i’m sure it’s fine if we just let another warm body into the place -- it’s not like we’re downright choosing who gets to survive and who’s forced out onto the streets. ’
romanvcs:
she’s TIRED. there are probably a thousand more accurate terms for what she’s feeling; shock, horror, regret, apprehension & FEAR ( just to name a few. ) yet it’s so much easier to blame lethargy for the way she carries herself about the tower. natasha still proves to be a skilled actress, apathetic mask still in place even as her mind fills with what ifs. but her posture is too rigid, her silences far too drawn out to be considered merely thoughtful.
it doesn’t help that more and more people are flocking to the tower. she’s relieved to see that so many have survived, yes—-because for what felt like so long she wondered—-but their entrance now only reminds her of moths rushing to a flame. tony’s heart is ( probably ) in the right place—but his logic ? and yet she’d still agreed with him because natasha is a FIGHTER and like hell will she allow the world to crumble in thanos’ hand. it’s just—how they go about it that has her hesitating.
she questions it even now—standing on what remains of a balcony thirty floors up. her eyes scan the wreckage before her, the streets that are undoubtedly filled with THINGS that make her feel completely out of her range of expertise. so what about the people inside who aren’t trained, who aren’t gifted with powers that press the boundaries of natural themselves ?
her thoughts are briefly interrupted by the sound of someone entering the room behind her. her fingers curl around the remaining railing, but she doesn’t bother to redirect her gaze. “ if you’re here for a good time, you might wanna try the next floor. i’m pretty sure i’ve broken tony’s no ‘ PESSIMISM ’ rule six too many times. ”
dozens of arrows lay scattered on the ground, discarded there in fury. electro arrows mingled with putty arrows and suction-tip arrows alike. a single boomerang arrow -- his last one -- lay in the center of the parade, the slight aerodynamic curve glinting from the sunlight slipping through the crack in the wall, peeking past the passing by clouds. the world was ending, that wasn’t anything new. but god fucking damnit, did the weather have to be so depressing?
he would abandon the salvaged pile of assets, in search of something, or someone, that could part the clouds and let some metaphorical sunshine in. well, as much sunshine as natasha romanoff actually had up there in that vicious head of hers. which was basically nonexistent. staying in stark towers, avengers tower, still felt so off -- even if he was an avenger. as he sat there, brushing his fingers against the ridges of the wounded arrows and sorting them into groups, he thought about how shitty of an avenger he really was. there were more than a few occasions clint had stopped to get coffee on his way to an urgent mission or attack.
the floorboards creaked -- of course, he couldn’t really hear them -- as he rounded the corner and into the long hallway, filled to the brim with doors both shut and open, housing all-around heroes and refugees from the battle against thanos. he can’t tell the difference between victim and hero anymore; the lines are so devilishly blurred that every hero seems like a victim, and every victim seems like a hero for just putting up with this extraterrestrial shit.
clint found the infamous head of red curls lingering on a secure balcony just at the end of the hall. he approached cautiously, not wanting her to fall off the ledge in surprise, but then he remembered that she was a mother effin’ spy, and if anyone were to end up falling off the side of the building, it would be him. plus, she would probably dive off the building and do a couple backflips, whereas he would literally just manage to emit an ‘ oops. ’
‘ wanna BET?? i’ve probably broken it seven times. ’ he mumbled, taking foot next to his comrade. clint cleared his throat. ‘ do you know.. if there’s a working coffee machine anywhere?? asking for a friend.. ’ he sputtered. ‘ side note: should i be asking you how you’re holding up? or is that against the spy code? ’
clint grimaced at the sharp pain in his shoulder blade. this goddamn collapsed shelf wasn’t going to move itself off of the dirty, but somehow unscathed sofa that lay in his temporary room at stark tower. complete with miserable, nearly inaudible groaning underneath his breath, the shelving unit slid a good couple of inches to the right. deep down, he knew that this was definitely not a one man job. but his ego wouldn’t let him accept that. neither would his drive.
his hearing aids were turned down, so he wouldn’t be able to hear the satisfying scratching noise as the two pieces of furniture slid against each other. he also didn’t hear anyone enter his room. sometimes, the world was better silent. most of the time, a quiet world sucked. on days like these, they weren’t so bad, because everything sucked. it was a peaceful kind of suckery. he glanced at the doorway, not really surprised to see someone standing there -- his closest friend was a goddamn spy, for heaven’s sake, so he had started to expect people to just appear in door frames, like it was normal aspect of society and not something completely spooky.
‘ before you ask, I DON’T NEED HELP. i can do this on my own. ’ he muttered, resting the side of the shelf on his aching shoulder without thinking. he concentrated on not wincing, making his gaze turn out to be a squinting glare of some sort.
