@arvchkid
bruce canât help it. â IT â to bruce banner could mean a multitude of things, however the â it â he has in mind is named peter parker. WORRYING. bruce canât help worrying about peter. ever since the web-slinging vigilanteâs identity had been revealed to him, the doctor had been sent reeling. itâs been close to two years now that bruce has come to know peterâthe young, energetic genius that seems to worship the very ground tony walks onâand heâs still been worrying all the same.Â
he does however, know better than to allow his doubts and fears hinder the youngster from doing what he wantsâor more importantly, whatâs GOOD; even if that entailed skateboarding around the lab ( which tony had decidedly elected wasnât a hazard, so bruce had to too ) or saving new york for the umpteenth time.Â
bruce reminds himself today, as he stocks his backpack with an array of medical supplies, that if thereâs anyone he should be worried over, it should be HIMSELF. peter can handle his own. mostly. the two have decided to go on a search in the wreckage for anyone injured, needed help or were simply lost. theyâd agreed on meeting in the main lab. as the doctor does a final survey of his supplies, he thinks he can hear peter approaching.Â
â PETER ? â he doesnât bother looking up, continuing to count the rolls of gauze tape in his bag. â that is you, isnât it ? â
when peter enters the lab itâs an INTERESTING site, to say the very least. half of him looks ready for battle, the other half of him looks like he should be headed to class. he had donned his costume, enduring the spandex despite the heat, but a black backpack was slung over his left shoulder and one foot was resting on his trusty skateboard.Â
â itâs me ! hey mr. dr. banner ! whatâs the plan ?? â
as peter spoke, he pushed himself up onto one of the labâs counter -- his legs dangling over the edge, swinging haphazardly. peter was glad to have something to focus on, something less distressing than his own worries and less intricate than the job mr. stark had assigned him of trying to REBUILD THE INTERNET.Â
â oh ! -- do you mind if i leave my board here ? i forgot to drop it off in my room and i have a feeling the city is already shredded enough without me.  ... that was in poor taste, i realize that now. sorry, dude. â
tony momentarily finds himself at a loss. â comforting â is not one of his strongest abilities, by any means. no, heâs the king of AWKWARD pats on the back and thin-lipped smiles strained with pity. of course, he waits until he finally jostles the slinger back into its rightful place before he delivers any of those â- one hand going to hesitantly rest on peterâs shoulder blade while the other sets the gadget by the keyboard.Â
â hey, iâm sure sheâsâ- â and what is he supposed to say after that ? he doesnât want to get the kidâs hopes up with aâ â donât worry âbout a thing, kiddo, iâm sure sheâs absolutely, perfectly fine. â though thatâs probably what a NORMAL human being would do â tony stark doesnât really fit under that category either. â listen, thereâre a couple kids around who are pretty good at finding peopleâsome kind of⊠gps thing in their brains, iâm still not 100% sold on how it works. iâll talk to âem andâwell, even if we get an idea, iâll do a round out there and see what i can find. and NO, parker, you get to stay here and work on the internet. every kidâs dream. â and itâs mainly because he doesnât want the boy to get eaten or mauled on a hunch. ( not to mention he doesnât want him along in case they run into the WORST case scenario. )
peter isnât an  I D I O T  -- in fact, despite some of things that come out of his mouth, peter was pretty damn smart ( a web slinging - skateboarding - spandex wearing - genius ). he could hear what tony was saying, and what he wasnât. he wasnât making baseless PROMISES or assuring him that she would be fine, there was a very real chance she wasnât. he stayed quiet, nodding along with what tony was telling him, but when the no came peter looked up, his brow furrowed, slowly shaking his head.Â
â no disrespect, mr. stark -- but if youâre going out there to find aunt may -- iâm coming with you. â
â oh, WHATEVER ! â cindy scoffed in amusement, eyes rolling at his words. â all you got, good âol pete, was just a lilâ bit of the good stuffâŸâŸand all the spiderâs S H I T because youâre so full of it. â hand that once occupied his shoulder fell into her lap once she noticed a slight mood change whenever her question was answered. â obviously itâs not whatever if youâre going around askinâ âbout her. â  tone seemed less FRIENDLY and more jealous ( jealous???? me, cindy moon, jealous??? NEVER! )âŸâŸthough it wasnât intentional. â sorry budâŸâŸi donât know what âta tell âya. but if i were you, iâd try butterinâ up some important people and maybe youâll get that extra room if it ainât already guaranteed. youâre pals with that STARK guy, right ? canât he pull some strings ? or, you can just make her a pallet on your floor ⟠⟠iâm sure sheâll know itâs better than nothinâ. â
peter CHUCKLED at her comments, but than realized he had ruined the mood. â yâknow ! as much as people usually donât like their EXES .. itâs kinda hard to justify leaving them in the chaos of an alien apocalypse. i think i can justify  n o t  sharing a room with her, though. â he paused, letting his head hang over the back of the couch looking up at the ceiling. â i didnât want to BOTHER mr. stark. i donât really mind bothering you though. youâre kind of contractually obligated as my sidekick, right ?? â
â whatever helps you sleep at night. just keep your eyes on tony â i wouldnât put it past him. â clint suggested with a lazy shrug, stating the obvious. sometimes he wished he had the suave personality of tony stark â but then again, he really didnât. and he would never admit to the fact that he was jealous of tonyâs magnetism. clint was just weak when it came to women. he cleared his throat, for a more serious tone. â donât worry, kid. iâm sure sheâll turn up. â stifling a smile, clint remembered that the two of them had one thing in common, if not more: they had both lost their parents at a really young age. he wondered what life would have been like, had he been raised by an aunt may figure. she clearly made damn sure to give the kid spirit. that was one thing clint always seemingly lacked.
â spideyâs got a girlfriend? good for you, kid. iâm sure itâs fine if we just let another warm body into the place â itâs not like weâre downright choosing who gets to survive and whoâs forced out onto the streets. â
peter scrunched his nose, knowing NOW was not the time to be worrying about that. tony had been flirting with aunt may and ( as strange as it was for peter ) nothing had come from it. a nagging voice added, that he was aware of. he let out a soft sigh, choosing to focus on the otherâs latter comment: iâm sure sheâll turn up. thatâs what he had to latch onto. HOPE.Â
there was another commonality between the two, even if neither were aware of it: peter was definitely more like clint than tony when it came to women. peter let out another breath of air, this one less of a sigh and more of a broken laugh â uh, NO. spidey does not have a girlfriend. â spidey has an ex girlfriend and the whole situation is rather complicated.Â
disconcertingly, it took a bit longer than steve would ever wish to admit to for anything to really register. from the confusing feeling of familiarity that came with hearing the kidâs voice, to the stopped skateboard beneath one of his feet, even after he watched him go through the motions ( even standing to make his own sound effects ) it wasnât until a quiet moment just beginning to edge on awkward had passed that steve REALISED it. dear god, did he ever, and as soon as he understood, there was a part of him that wished to retract whatever thought he gave towards it ââ towards this goddamned kid.
because that was exactly what he was. the little beanpole of a guy before him, sporting a graphic tee and a ratty pair of sneakers, this kid was someone steve knew ALL too well. and really, seeing him out of the spandex and milling about the tower like any other civilian, that was what really put things into perspective. red and blue really did a number for a guy, and now that he was out of his own costume, and they were meeting on newer, less volatile terms, there was a part of steve that stood to be HORRIFIED.Â
thinking back to the battle on the air strip that felt like eons ago with everything theyâd experienced since, and all he could remember was the way he had fought. diving into the thick of things, never stopping to pull his punches, steve had fought to win, and it had ended with him dropping a TRUCKTON of metal onto the kid. he could have killed him ââ squashed him like a goddamn bug. so just what exactly had he been THINKING? ( that he had been older, not as young, with a few more years of life experience, maybe ).Â
â  youâre thatââ that kid from queens, right?  â  and he knew his name. he knew it, goddamn spider man, and here he was, still trying to postpone the inevitable reveal of the truth.
peter just nodded, before slamming a foot down on the tail of the skateboard, quickly popping it up off the ground and into his waiting arms. however, realizing how this had gone already, he changed tactics. â yes, sir. queens near 71st station. â peter replied, clearing his throat and holding out the hand not holding hid board. â PETER PARKER, at your service, mr. rogers. â part of him was wishing it might have gone different, but the realist in him was pointing out how it would be pretty much IMPOSSIBLE for captain america to have just recognized him. their only interactions had been in uniform.Â
â sorry about the whole ... pht pht thing. iâm a little tired. AND HUNGRY. â a little was a huge understatement, still peter was kicking himself for his â performance â a moment earlier, hanging his head slightly and laughing at his own expense â itâs really great to met you IN REAL PERSON ? i mean, uh, yâknow -- â he gestured vaguely to the space in between them, â when iâm not wearing spandex. â he bit his lip and crinkled his nose slightly before adding, â my auntâs a big fan. she, uh -- â he stops himself, realizing his  r a m b l i n g  and he still hasnât found aunt may.Â
â look, sir, iâm sure youâre really busy, â he says, starting to walk backwards slightly, unsure what exactly what to do next, â being CAPTAIN AMERICA and all that.. .. â he trailed off, looking with wide eyes at the other, â and, uh, mr. stark has me FIXING GOOGLE and uh, i know the tower pretty well -- i come to the labs after school ... a lot. iâm sure youâve got something more dire than walking around with little olâ me. â
@arvchkid
Itâs w e i r d, having someone see your POTENTIAL. Not until Doctor Banner and her have a discussion, until he welcomes her to the labs, allows her to help out, do any adults actually SEE how s m a r t she is. Itâs not anyones fault: growing up in the poor part of the city meant everyone was busy trying to SURVIVE and left no room to acknowledge that Riley was l i g h t y e a r s beyond the other kids. But the doctor DOES, and he allows her to spend her time there, building and researching and trying to do whatever she can to help. Riley is just thankful she has something to d o other than sit on her ass.Â
Hence, why sheâs walking back from the commons with three cups of coffee at 7:00am. It was going to be a LONG day, she could feel it in her bones. Her eyes wander a bit, peering through windows to other labs and quickly examining their projects (not judging, but Riley is curious, itâs not a CRIME), until she sees a figure that causes her to do a double take.
She K N O W S that mop of hair.Â
Riley fights the urge to laugh ( of c o u r s e they would have to work together at the end of all things- she LOVES irony ), instead leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed. Not that she expects him to notice her; if heâs anything like she is, he wouldnât notice if a truck rammed through a wall when he was working, but because she canât decide whether or not she wants to sass him or be nice. Luckily, the universe decides FOR her.Â
â So not to alarm you or anything, but youâre smoking. â
really, BEING ON FIRE should not have been a risk peter parker would face trying to help mr. stark piece back together the internet. AND YET. his face was screwed up, his brow furrowed as he scanned lines of code while he worked on building a wifi repeater ( if they could even get SOMETHING up, then they would be able to expand the range to the rest of the tower ). peterâs hair had fallen into his eyes, but he was too intent on fixing this. he had told mr. stark he would, and now he had to.Â
when he hears the voice behind him though, he isnât sure what to react to first: the smoke wafting up from the bottom hem of his jeans or the fact that RILEY RIVERA ( SECOND PLACE AT THE FIVE BURROWS MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE FAIR ... if he remembered correctly ) was standing behind him. his nose crinkled like he had smelled something bad [ possibly the burning denim ?? ] and spun around, knocking a few tools off the counter he had been working on, to face her.Â
â youâre, uh, youâre here ? does tony know youâre here ? â
âChill? Thatâs one I havenât heard before,â the woman responded, pleased with the reaction she received. A laugh, one that bubbled up from within her, made itâs way to her lips. âBut yes, of course she can stay with me. Iâm not going to let a poor girl sleep on the streets.â
he opens his mouth, ready to speak but unsure what to say â ... youâre not the first one to tell me that today. â dude, CHILL -- he seemed to be confusing everyone. â her nameâs mj , uh, MARY JANE -- sheâs a bit of a firecracker. bright red hair, youâll see her coming. â
âWell in that case â hypothetically,â Jane said, offering him a polite smile. âShe would be more than welcome to stay with me in my room. I canât promise itâs very large but I suppose anything works right now.â The woman herself had been lucky enough to find a room, and she would have hated to be left out in the rain in such a situation like this. Being accommodating to the othersâ seemed like the least she could do.
â SERIOUSLY ? â all peter had really been looking for was a sign to what they were planning to do with civilians -- to help them, of course, but there was ( after the destruction of the city ) a limited, and valuable amount of space stark tower had to offer. â youâre pretty chill, dr. foster. â

left hook. right hook. pretend the goddamn punching bag is one of the creatures that attacked you a couple of days ago. pretend itâs eerily pitch-black pupils are staring you dead in the eye. pretend you can sense the fact that it has no soul â that itâs not human, itâs something else. itâs not itâs own thing. itâs simply taking orders. like you are.
or are you even taking orders anymore? is there anyone out there with the authority to do so anymore? has shield fallen, does anyone actually need level seven clearance to find out earthâs biggest secrets? what could be more terrifying than an alien invasion? you preached the safety of the inhumans; you asked everyone not to judge, politely. or maybe â not so politely. but you still asked. and you feel like a fucking idiot now, because these aliens are goddamn proving you wrong. you canât even â
â SHITâ â daisy cursed, hissing between her teeth as the sandbag ripped from the inside out. she had subconsciously used her seismic waves. she bit her tongue until a metallic taste formed, signifying her that wait, she was actually in pain. daisy glanced at peter, on the other side of the room. â sorry. i shouldâve let you go first, kiddo. hopefully i didnât just break the only punching bag left in the training unit, because.. yikes. if anybody asks, it wasnât me. â
peter wasnât exactly sure HOW he ended up here -- gyms were never his place, even after the bite. he had tried using the gyms, especially the ones in stark tower -- knowing they were build for people like him. it just never felt right ( it felt like cheating ). he practiced of course, but he made QUEENS + the rest of new york his training ground .. not a gym. never a gym. however, here is where his meandering feet had taken him.Â
peter leaned against the far wall, watching daisy beat the living shit ( did that make sense in this context ? ) out of the punching bag like it had personally caused all of the chaos currently filling the streets. he had, however, zoned out slightly, his mind wandering as he watched. the sound of the bag ripping brought him back to reality. â shit... â peter repeated, starring at in awe.Â
â uhm , no -- i think tony has extras .. this place was built with, well, us in mind. not us like us us, but .. yâknow .. â he trailed off starring at the bag. â shit. â
GOOD ONE, barnes. he thinks wryly as he steadies his breathes. bucky inhales big, and exhales slow. in bigâout slow. that god awful feeling in his stomach passes at some point, and heâs thankful for it. a part of bucky tells him he should move away from the ledge he almost plummeted to his second death from, another part of himâ a larger, and lazier part at that, tells him to just lay the hell down and let his muscles settle against the bare flooring.Â
and then, bucky hears a voice ( a very young, very familiar voice ) followed by the soft patter of him coming closer. he sits up, running a hand through his hair whilst looking over his shoulder to find some KID in a sweatshirt. aw, hell. THIS was the one that kicked his ass at the airport ? â dude ? â he finds to be the first thing that comes out of his mouth. over the past century buckyâs been called a lot of things; this is the first time heâs been called that. â ahâ but no, i donât mind. go right ahead, pal. â he reaches an arm outâand it just so happens to be the METAL oneâ and takes a meager bunch of the snack. bucky immediately pops one into his mouth. â thanks. â
peter settles himself in, sitting criss cross applesauce on the floor, leaning FORWARD just enough to peer over the ledge. his mind is focused there when bucky first speaks, so he doesnât notice the otherâs confusion in peterâs language choice. it doesnât really even cross his mind that bucky barnesâ lexicon, might be a little different than his own. â thanks, man. âÂ
â HAVE I MENTIONED HOW COOL YOUR ARM IS ? i just got a lame ass scar when the spider bit me. look, see !! â he pushes apart his hair, exposing the small mark on the left side of his neck. â i really need to get my hair cut, itâs getting kindâa long. â he pauses, leaning just a little bit further. â yâknow, youâre kindâa quiet. â
âHypothetically speaking, there should be more rooms available in the tower â to my knowledge at least. But most of the upper levels seem to be missing their glass windows and appear to be in a state of disarray,â Jane explained to the boy, using a hand to gesture to the levels above them. The scientist had been lucky enough to secure herself a room in the tower, thanks to SHIELD. But with Tonyâs plan prompting the arrival of many more people in the near future, there was a very real chance that sharing rooms would become an option.
Not that she minded, of course. âWhy â hypothetically, of course â do you ask?â
â i just know itâs going to get PRETTY CROWDED, pretty quickly. â peter replied, giving a small shrug. the tower was  h u g e  but only a percentage of its former amenities survived. â there had to be some sort of priority seating system showing up pretty soon, â he paused, crossing his arms, before answering the otherâs question. â hypothetically, thereâs a girl i know who needs a place to crash, because her place has kinda been ... CRASHED. â
â âya know, beinâ bit by the same spider, we kinda have that SPIDER-LY bondâŸâŸÂ â a moment was taken for cindy to place the book she once had her nose in on the floor beside her foot, â but that wonât STOP me from hypothetically stickinâ my foot up your ass ⟠⟠out of spider-ly love, of course. â though words seemed harsh, the girl couldnât help but let out a laughâŸâŸwhether she was laughing at peter or with peter would never be revealed ( though knowing cindy, she was more than DEFINITELY laughing at him ). a small hand was slapped onto peteâs shoulder [ cindyâs way of trying to comfort him, alas she was never good at â comfortingâ ], followed by an attempt at a reassuring smile. Â
â this â GIRL â youâre talkinâ about ⟠⟠who is she ? is she one of the magnificent pete mcparkerâs soon-to-be s p e c i a l ladies ? or a relative ?âŸâŸthose get pretty messy. or, well, mine do anyways. â
'  i donât think you could TAKE ME, cind. i mean, the spider kindâa used up all the good stuff on me --- you just got the leftovers.  â he shot her a grin before adding, â  i tell you this out of SPIDER-LY love, obviously.  â however the joking stopped when the question of e x a c t l y who this â girl â was was risen. peter looked down at his sneakers, suddenly becoming interested in a smudge on the toe of the left one. â  more like used-to-be ??  i donât know, itâs whatever.  â
â iâŸâŸuh, what ? â at first, cindy had no I D E A she was being spoken to (has he been here the whole time ? )  ⟠⟠the girl catching the tail end of his sentence and nothing more. though, being bitten by the same spider, she could sense anywhere good âol PETER PARKER was at whatever given time [ although cindy moon was too invested in the book in front of her to pay attention to her incredibly unusual senses ]. a few moments were taken as she tried to piece together bits and pieces of the words she heard, though she came up EMPTY handed. â iâm honestly the worst person you could find to answer that question. â the girl hadnât been there that long, the tower still an interesting place to explore.
the intern was still getting used to the whole â SUPER HERO THINGIE â as she called it. prior to having dual identities, cindy moon was already terrible with time management and remaining focused. and now with her also being known as s i l k, it seems theyâve only gotten worse. BUT !âŸâŸshe does TRY her best.
â iâm thinkinâ about ʰʞá”á”á”ʰá”á”ᶀá¶á”ËĄËĄÊž askinâ you to stop saying hypothetically. â
â well if you were to HYPOTHETICALLY do that, i would, ( hypothetically! ) point out that until you said hypothetically .. i really only said hypothetically twice, but thatâs just a hypothetical. â he grinned, taking up the seat beside her. â besides if youâre only hypothetically asking me, it hasnât really happened, has it ?? â there was never a middle ground, peter was either too smart for his own good, or not enough.Â
he bites his lower lip, looking over at cindy. â i just .. i donât want to send this girl back out there, but i donât exactly want to be sharing a room with her. â not yet anyway.
&&Â @arvchkid.
making it to the tower without an actual plan to go by was decidedly not the best of ideas. as natasha had reminded him a countless number of times, punching until there was nothing left to punch couldnât be counted as a real plan ( which was arguable, in his opinion ), and therefore whatever ideas he had gotten into his head about making it to the avengerâs tower took far longer than he had expected. what, with the endless amount of aliens that seemed to crawl out from every possible crack and crevice of the rubble, what should have been a two or so hour trip became extended to the majority of the day.
it was what left him nearly sluggish as he climbed up the first few flights of stairs in the tower. ( it seemed, when pushed far enough, even super soldiers needed to rest and recuperate. ) he may have been SUPER, but even steve needed the careful reminder that he wasnât invincible. as much as he tried to play it off that he was, his aching muscles and the long sigh that escaped him proved otherwise, as did the bleak look that took to his eyes as he finally made it to a floor with actual people milling about.Â
even if the last thing he wanted was to make small talk and interact, after everything he had seen out THERE, to see the proof of life, and a reassurance for what it was exactly that he continued to fight for was relievingââheartening, even. with old shield members and other nameless professionals making use of their time and talents, whereas steve was ready to move on to where his own bunk was held, it was a flash of red and a face that looked far too young that caused him to pause.Â
â hey kid, you alright?   â  because regardless of however tired he felt, he couldnât leave some kid to try and navigate the maze that was stark tower on his ownââ he could never be that cruel.â  you get separated from someone? or are you just lookinâ for the civilian floor?   â
peter had spent most of the day helping tony, trying not to think about mary jane who was HERE -- in the middle of everything -- and aunt may who was .. well ANYWHERE. he tried his best not to, but they kept surfacing in his mind anyway. DONâT THINK ABOUT A PURPLE ELEPHANT, aunt may used to tell him that, trying to explain why thinking about not thinking about something didnât work. he never completely understood it, but instead took it as a distraction method. he moved through the halls of stark tower ( he really shouldnât be on a skateboard inside but ... ) repeating the mantra to himself.    he knew he really should get some sleep, tony would want his help again in the morning.  he rolled slowly but steadily, watching as others milled about the tower, heading back to the room he had been staying in. on the way back he heard CAPTAIN AMERICAâS voice, talking to him. he smiled wide, in a way that betrayed his true age -- as much as he tried to act like an adult ( for tony ! for gwen ! for aunt may ! ) there was a childlike spirt in him. he opened his mouth to reply, to say iâm doing okay, cap! how about yourself? when steve rogers finished his sentence.Â
â oh. â he says, stopping the skateboard and looked up at one of his heroes. his brain fully processed, of course he didnât actually know him. â oh, uh, no ? actually. iâm supposed to be here. iâm, uh, â he smiles softly, holding up his hands in the motion he used to activate his slinger, letting out a quick pht pht sound to give the full effect. a moment later he realized what he had just done. â that was weird, wasnât it? yeap.. weird. sorry âbout that, dude. â a nervous hand rubbed the nape of his neck and peter made a face at his own actions.Â
