in his early 20s , billy had a one night stand with a woman named sandy ives shortly before deploying to one of his first tours in iraq. as is the nature of one night stands , billy didn’t keep in touch with her and thus never found out that she became pregnant with his son , henry russo , or that she kept him. she tracked him down in the mid-2010s ( post kandahar ) through facebook and reached out through there to reveal the news       mostly in an effort to extort money from him. 

billy had her complete a paternity test to confirm that henry was actually his son. he also hired  a private detective to look into her history to see what he was getting into with her. what he found was someone largely like his own mom : a woman who tied herself to any man who would fuck her rather than worrying about ensuring her son was taken care of , a neat prescription drug and alcohol habit , and an overall waste of oxygen       trailer trash , essentially.

while billy doesn’t want kids and has never wanted kids , he also doesn’t want to be like his own mom or father. at the same time and especially during those years , he didn’t want rawlins to have any more leverage over him than he already did so billy never met henry or saw sandy face to face. 

he , instead , had $1000 deposited monthly into a bank account for henry to use while also ensuring that sandy couldn’t access the money or use it herself. that account was frozen after his 2017 arrest and the files on henry and sandy were collected from his upper west side home by homeland before eventually being turned over to the nypd. due to the nature of his tbi , billy does not remember the existence of his son.
