the reason that i personally don’t like being called queer and don’t use it as a self-identifier is because in addition to coming from a location (rural idaho if you’re nosy) where it was used in an exclusively negative way, it does nothing for me. it’s a reminder of bad experiences and it’s way too general of a term. as a lesbian, i don’t want something general. i want something that makes it extremely clear that only women are part of the way i experience attraction so it doesn’t make sense for me to reclaim it in the way that it makes sense for me to reclaim dyke.

lesbian, on the other hand, has never been a slur and it’s free to use. people writing neoliberal thinkpieces on “queer women” need to step back and learn how to use it when it’s applicable—like when they’re talking about actual lesbians and still won’t just say “lesbian.” it doesn’t make sense to foist a generic term onto a whole group of people when that term is something not everyone is comfortable with and these people litcherally identify as lesbians.
