Rewrite: Culture of the Clans 1- Hobbies and Art

Just because the Clans have a regimented society doesn't mean that the lives of the cats residing in them are all work and no play. There are many ways for a cat to pass their time outside of their duties to their Clan.

Painting and Sculpting

Many cats are artistically inclined, with painting and sculpting being very common hobbies. The most common creations are portraits of either oneself, one's clanmates, or prey, and scenes from stories or Clan history.

Painting is primarily done on the insides of Dens and caverns to prevent it being washed away by the elements, but some paintings are designed to be outside as warnings against trespassing on the Clan's territory or of threats in the area such as badgers or large dogs to try to prevent harm coming to others. Paint is created from various kinds of berries or insects; once the necessary ingredients for the desired colors are gathered, they are then crushed with paws or rocks and mixed as needed and then used to paint. When gathering materials for paint, it is recommended to bring an experienced cat along to prevent accidentally bringing poisonous ingredients like deathberries back to camp rather than their harmless counterparts. Painting can be done any time of the year as long as the supplies for the paint are well-kept.

Sculpting tends to be a much more involved practice than painting is. Sculpting involves either gathering semi-solid mud or clumps of dry earth (soil, not excrement) to mix into semi-solid mud and then carefully sculpting it into the desired shape and pressing feathers, flowers, or anything else needed into it before taking it to a dry spot with plenty of sunlight to harden into it's final shape. Sculpting is a difficult process, and it can take many tries for a cat to get a hang of it, but it's also very rewarding when one's creation comes out the exact way they wanted. Traditional sculpting is only able to be done in the warmer seasons, with Greenleaf being the best time of year for it depending on conditions. In Leaf-Bare, snow and ice are used for sculptures instead, although these are much less permanent than traditional sculpting is, which may bother some cats.

There is also the primarily-ShadowClan practice of bone drying, painting, and carving (sort of like taxidermy but less refined and only using the bones of prey) as a method of storytelling and honoring the lives of prey animals after consumption. The other Clans tend to find this practice unnerving, though, and almost never do it themselves.

Singing and Music

Clan cats are a surprisingly musical bunch, and music is an excellent way for a Clan to bond and share history with each other. Clan music doesn't utilize instruments, rather it consists of stomping to provide a beat and singing or humming to make a melody line. An entire group singing together either in sync or singing different lines at the same time (without managing to sound cacophonic) is a staple of Clan music. While there are specific songs for events or seasons of many different varieties, each Clan has a genre that they seem to prefer.

ShadowClan music tends to be eerie in tone, and their songs are full of tragedy and the dark humor their Clan is known for. ThunderClan songs are powerful ballads speaking of heroes of the past and victory in battle. WindClan's music is the most spiritual, alternatively, their songs are often about hardships of the past that they recovered from despite the pain. RiverClan prefers sea shanties and love stories and put plentiful humor in just about every song they make. Modern SkyClan takes a lot of influence from Twoleg music (for better or for worse depending on who you ask).

Storytelling

For Clan cats, telling stories isn't just a hobby or a way to pass time; it's a way to connect with tradition and remember important past events. While the practice is most common among the Clans' Elders, Medicine Cats, and Den-Parents, it isn't exclusively done by them. Sometimes arguments do happen due to differences in telling stories, with some preferring to stick to agreed truth and others enjoying wildly exaggerating events for entertainment value.

Stories can also serve a spiritual function- since StarClan cats are said to disappear once every living cat forgets them, cats often tell stories of their deceased family members and loved ones to keep them around in the afterlife.

Decorating and Accessorizing

You might think that since the Clans don't wear collars or clothing like kittypets do they don't have an appreciation for aesthetics or fashion. You would be wrong. Many cats weave flowers or leaves into the fur on their heads, or meticulously arrange feathers or insect wings in their tail fur. This isn't a gender-specific practice either; toms and jacks utilize accessories as much as mollies do (fashion shouldn't be gendered, fight me). Some cats will even use berries or clay to dye their fur different colors- this practice tends to be more common among younger cats as a sign of rebellion.

Even cats who don't use accessories in their fur will decorate their individual nest (or the communal one they share as the case may be) to make it personalized and more comfortable.

Rewrite Dark Forest Lore

Compared to StarClan, the Dark Forest (sometimes also referred to as The Place of No Stars, although "Dark Forest" is the more commonly used name) is a much younger Plane. That doesn't necessarily mean that those who dwell here aren't as powerful as StarClan though...

The Origins and Purpose of The Dark Forest

Just as StarClan was constructed from a spirit, the Dark Forest was made from one as well. When One-Eye the Wicked, a cat who spent his life wreaking havoc and suffering on the fledgeling Clans, died, StarClan knew his spirit couldn't be left to wander the mortal plane. If it was, he would continue to pose a grave danger to all living cats. So the High Council worked together to transform his soul into a shadowy plane resembling a barren, starless forest; now he couldn't cause any harm and could also serve as a place to send other wicked deceased away to.

Despite it being a place to contain evil souls, the Dark Forest was not originally meant to be a permanent residence for any soul other than One-Eye's. Its primary goal was to be a place for those who had caused harm in life to repent and learn the error of their ways before then ascending into StarClan. And for a time, that function worked. Until one day, StarClan's ability to look into the plane at all stopped working. All that could be seen was a patch of gnarled brambles shielding the plane from view, the blood red full moon glaring through a small gap like a single angry, baleful eye...

Perhaps One-Eye's spirit wasn't as stripped of his power as was originally thought...

From that day on, the Dark Forest ceased to allow any spirits out, and on rare occasions even forcibly dragged the freshly dead inside it without the spirits having been sent there on purpose by StarClan.

Dark Forest Terrain

As can be inferred from its name, the Dark Forest is, well, a dark forest. No stars are ever visible in its sky; the only light to be seen is the ever-present glow of the red full moon shining above. It is always nighttime there, and the sun never rises. No prey can be found there; but the forest is filled with hungry predators (not to mention other wicked spirits that are also desperately starving). There is little water, and what small amount there is is filthy and filled with disease. Some of it is even caustic to the touch, melting the flesh of those who attempt to drink it.

Brambles cover nearly every available surface, and there is no comfortable place to rest or sleep. Even if a cat attempts to climb into a tree, the branches are covered in sharp thorns that impale the body. Nowhere is safe.

Dark Forest Spirits

Unlike StarClan spirits, those who dwell in the Dark Forest are not pleasing to look upon. Their appearance and physical state are locked to how they looked in death: if a cat died from injury, their wounds continually bleed and never heal no matter how much time passes; if they died from venom or poison, they are wracked with constant agony and seizures. Eventually, whether through starvation, dehydration, being killed by a predator or another spirit, or taken out by what caused their death in the first place, they will succumb and die.

But even death does not stop their suffering; like StarClan spirits, Dark Forest residents are functionally immortal in their home plane, and upon dying they simply reanimate to begin the cycle anew. What's more, Dark Forest spirits cannot fade on their own- even if all living cats forget them, they still continue to exist. Understandably, most end up going fully mad, but some manage to remain (relatively) sane. Paradoxically, it is the saner dead that are the most dangerous (although the reason why will be explained in the section below).

Communing With the Living

This is the aforementioned reason of why the sane dead are the most dangerous of all things lurking within the Dark Forest; like StarClan cats, Dark Forest cats are able to interact with the living. Unlike StarClan cats, they need much less energy to do so, meaning that it is very easy for them to cause havoc in the mortal realm. They whisper in the dreams of sleeping cats, and can even twist those dreams to look different as they please. This is to better fool the living into listening to them, as in dreams they can change their own appearances and even temporarily take on the form of a StarClan spirit to further gain a cat's trust.

However, they cannot sustain these illusions for very long, so they must either keep these visits short or indoctrinate the cat quickly. In addition, they have the same restriction of not being able to contact cats who do not believe in their existence, so they aren't exactly all-powerful.

Rewrite StarClan Lore Part One: Origins of StarClan and StarClan Cats

StarClan's Origins

In the beginning, the Clans as mortals know them were just barely formed. They were in constant conflict, battles and even outright wars breaking out for the smallest and pettiest of reasons. The spirits of the deceased wandered alongside the living, as they had no realm to call their own. One day, a massive bloody battle broke out between all the groups at once. The spirits had had enough; they had to convince the living to make peace if they were to survive. Working together, they used their collective power to appear before the living cats and convinced them to work together before fading from their eyes once more. While their immediate goal had been achieved, the use of spiritual power had taken its toll. If the spirits did not obtain a Plane to exist on soon, they would all vanish completely and no one would be there to guide the living.

The spirit that had been dead the longest and was the closest to ceasing to exist, a cat named Shaded Moss, chose to sacrifice himself for the sake of his fellow spirits. His soul stretched over the heavens, creating hills and valleys, trees and brooks, dens and plentiful prey. As he himself faded away, his spirit's transformed remains became the new home for his friends, family, and all their descendants for as long as there was belief.

A worthy sacrifice if there ever was one.

StarClan's Terrain

The terrain in StarClan is not really any different from the living realm, except for the removal of certain hazards and minor annoyances (predators besides cats, thorns, ticks and other biting insects, deep rushing water, etc). There is always plenty of prey, even though the spirits don't technically need to eat (most still choose to do so). The environment is also capable of physically warping to the needs of the spirits themselves; a couple examples of this would be obstacles moving out of the way of a blind spirit or the ground shaking slightly to alert a deaf spirit of someone wanting to communicate with them.

StarClan Spirits

StarClan spirits look much like they did in life, with only a few real differences. They appear to be slightly translucent and have what look like stars speckled throughout their pelts. If the cat died from a fatal wound or had scars, those show up as constellations, connected by a line. The more a StarClan cat fades (is forgotten by the living), the dimmer the stars in their fur and more translucent they will look. The spirits only remembered by a single living cat are almost invisible except for their eyes shining faintly.

StarClan cats often take on the appearance they had during what would be the happiest time in their mortal lives when simply existing in their domain, but when visiting living cats they tend to take on the appearance they had when that particular cat last saw them for ease of communication.

The sole exception to this rule are cats who died before reaching adulthood (ex: a kit who died from sickness). These cats are allowed to age in StarClan, taking on the appearances they would've had if their life had continued. They are even mentored by other StarClan cats for apprenticeships. This phenomenon is the reason behind the existence of Star Names, Warrior names granted to cats who die before becoming Warriors; it's rather strange to refer to a grown cat as "Littlekit", after all.

Cats who were disabled in life are still disabled in StarClan. If their disability caused physical pain in life, it no longer does so in death. And as stated before in the terrain section, the environment of StarClan itself will accommodate a cat's specific needs without any issue.

StarClan spirits are near-immortal when in their own domain, only really "dying" when their memory has been forgotten by all living cats and they fade away; their souls transformed anew and plunged back into the world as a newborn kit possessing no memory of their past life. However, they are able to be killed outside of StarClan via the same means a mortal would be able to die. This causes them to fade instantly.

Communing With the Living

It takes a considerable amount of energy and power for a StarClan cat to interact with a living cat, and as such they rarely visit their family and friends on the mortal plane for pleasure. It is much easier for many spirits working together to channel a gateway of sorts through a conduit (the most famous and powerful of which being the Moonstone in the old territories and the Moonpool in the new territories) to allow a living cat temporary entrance into StarClan. This is what happens during the Half-Moon Meetings, when the Medicine Cats of all Clans gather to discuss issues and current happenings.

As stated before, it is very draining for StarClan cats to interact with the living. However, there is a bit of a scale to that. Cats who have a connection to StarClan in the first place, such as Medicine Cats and Leaders who have received their nine lives, are very easy to interact with and cost considerably less power and energy to contact. In very rare cases, a normal, otherwise unremarkable cat may be born with a stronger connection to StarClan and not become a Medicine Cat; such cats are also very easy to contact.

On the opposite end of the spectrum are cats who lack belief in StarClan. The more a cat doesn't believe in their Warrior ancestors, the harder it is for the spirits to reach them. A cat that doesn't believe in StarClan's existence at all is completely impossible for them to interact with no matter how much power is used.

The Matter of Prophecies

It is the task of StarClan spirits to deliver prophecies to the living, but the difficulty in doing so makes sending visions and subtle signs much easier. The trade-off to that is that the living may wildly misinterpret them and take the wrong course of action.

Prophecies do generally come from StarClan themselves, but aren't directly from the "normal" spirits (ie, the ones who interact with the living). Instead, these come from The Council; a collection of especially powerful cat spirits who are, in essence, demigods. They generally prefer to whisper in the ears of the more "normal" spirits to deliver their messages. This is mostly due to their appearances being so warped and alien that simply catching a glimpse of one of them causes an instinctive panic in both living and deceased cats.

Update

Hi, it's been awhile! I've been busy with a lot of other things and haven't had the time or focus to work on this rewrite. I've started doing yet another overhaul of everything since I ran into some issues with writing some future plot summaries. Right now I'm mostly focusing on ironing out concrete lore for various things in this AU, so you'll hopefully see some of those coming out soon!

Detailed Rewrite Plot Summary: SkyClan and the Strangers

An interlude that takes place a bit before the events of the third Arc, setting up some new villains!

The story begins with Leafstar and her mates Cora and Billystorm hunting in the forest. It is mentioned that Leafstar is expecting kits, with Billystorm being the sire. The three return to camp with their caught prey, looking down into the camp. Bouncefire is showing some apprentices- Birdpaw, Sandypaw, and Honeypaw- how to jump like SkyClan cats. Lichenfur, an Elder, is annoyed by this, saying that they are cats, not rabbits. Patchfoot, the apprentices' father, retorts that it is a useful skill and that they need to learn it at some point.

Just then, Birdpaw injures herself by hitting a rock while Bouncefire isn't looking. Clovertail, the apprentices' mother, immediately begins scolding Bouncefire for not paying more attention. Echosong, Leafstar's other mate and the Clan's Medicine Cat, comes over to check on Birdpaw and says that she'll be alright since it was only a small scrape. She also scolds Leafstar when she, Billystorm, and Cora reenter the camp, saying that Leafstar will begin kitting any day now and that leaving camp is unsafe for her.

A scouting patrol returns with news that a fox has been scented on SkyClan's territory. Ebonyclaw, a Daylight-Warrior like Billystorm, comes up with the idea of bending sticks to mark how far the scent came into the territory. Sharpclaw praises her for this, showing how far he's come with trusting the Daylight-Warriors.

Afterwards, Leafstar eats with Clovertail and Echosong. While Clovertail is giving her advice about her coming kits, Leafstar notices Sharpclaw and Cherryblossom leaving the camp. She asks the two if they're checking on the fox scent the patrol mentioned. Sharpclaw awkwardly says that they were just going on a walk to discuss something, but that they could do that as well while they're out. After the pair leave, Leafstar asks the other two mollies if the two were behaving strangely or if it was just her. Clovertail explains that the two have been discussing Sharpclaw possibly Honor-Siring some kits for Cherryblossom in the near-future, and that's why they're a bit anxious.

That night, Leafstar has a nightmare about losing her kits. She hears the rest of SkyClan calling her name for help while she is chasing her kits. She becomes torn between helping her Clan and saving her kits. Her thrashing wakes up Cora and Billystorm beside her, and they wake her up and comfort her as she tries to calm down.

Leafstar begins to suspect that something is going on with a few of the apprentices, as some patrols have noticed their scents going past the Clan's borders. She wants to go investigate herself, but her mates and Clovertail reprimand her and she stays in the Nursery as Sharpclaw, Egg, and Cherryblossom go search for them. This turns out to have been the best call, as Leafstar begins kitting soon after the patrol leaves. She gives birth to three healthy kits, two mollies and a tom. The mollies are named Firekit and Stormkit after Firestar and Sandstorm and the tom is named Rainkit after the deceased warrior Rainspeckle.

But things don't stay calm for too long, as Egg and Cherryblossom come racing into camp alongside the apprentices mentioned before. They reveal that the apprentices have been accepting food from an elderly female Twoleg, and when the patrol found and confronted them she had come after them and taken Sharpclaw, who stayed so the others could get away. (Unbeknownst to the cats, the Twoleg was just concerned for the cats' welfare and wanted to take them to the vet because of their injuries).

Leafstar is about to send a patrol out to rescue her Deputy, but just then Sharpclaw returns to camp no worse for wear with a pair of strange cats following behind him. The cats introduce themselves as Aurora and Jupiter, and Sharpclaw explains that the two helped him get away from the Twoleg by distracting her. The two are very interested in SkyClan and express interest in joining. Leafstar happily agrees, as the two did rescue her Deputy, and she announces their joining to the Clan and also sets punishments for the rule-breaking apprentices. She cites Sharpclaw's near-kidnapping as a good reason to never accept food from Twolegs.

A few moons later, Leafstar is happily watching her kits play outside the Nursery. She is approached by Birdpaw and Sandypaw, who complain to her that Aurora and Jupiter don't do any of the tasks that the other apprentices do. She explains that it's because the two are adults and thus have more experience than a typical apprentice does. She also notes that the two seem to fit in well with the Clan beside this new complaint, so she doesn't put much stock in it.

Later on in the day, Rockshade and Bouncefire get into an argument with the Daylight-Warriors Macgyver and Harveymoon about the way they and the other Daylight-Warriors live. Leafstar steps in to stop them, but is distracted by Rainkit accidentally hurting himself. While his other parents attempt to comfort him, he continues crying and Leafstar is forced to go to him.

After the argument, Billystorm and Ebonyclaw offer to go hunting to feed the Clan and not take any for themselves. This pleases the other cats, particularly Leafstar and Sharpclaw, who are just glad the fighting has stopped. Everyone goes back to their normal activities until the two come back injured with no prey. They were attacked while hunting unprovoked by a badger that was behaving oddly, like it was looking for something... Echosong informs Ebonyclaw that she needs to stay overnight in camp due to her badger injury, which makes the Daylight-Warrior nervous.

Later, after being assigned to a hunting patrol by Sharpclaw, Aurora and Jupiter split up from the patrol, ignoring Leafstar's orders completely. When asked, the two show Leafstar how they hunt: stealing prey from predators such as hawks, foxes, and badgers. Leafstar is furious and horrified, wondering if this is why the badger went after Billystorm and Ebonyclaw earlier, and scolds the two for putting both the Clan and themselves in danger instead of putting in work themselves. She then drags the upset pair back to camp, telling them that they need to learn to properly hunt.

That night, the Clan is attacked by a large group of foxes that seem to be working together, which are presumably more of the ones Aurora and Jupiter stole prey from. Speaking of Aurora and Jupiter, the two are nowhere to be found during the battle. Leafstar tries to help in the battle, but is distracted when brave little Stormkit tries to jump from the cliff to help her mother in the battle. Thankfully, she is saved by Lichenfur, and Leafstar helps the others drive the foxes away.

After the foxes are driven off, Aurora and Jupiter finally show up again. The two admit that they were hiding and say that they were so frightened of the foxes they couldn't have fought if they tried. The interrupt Leafstar's scolding them by telling her why joining SkyClan is so important to them in the first place: their mother had told them many stories about The Sky Cats (presumably Ancient SkyClan), who she was supposedly a descendant of. They and their siblings were in awe of the amazing feats preformed by the characters in the stories, and wanted to be like them one day. They promise Leafstar they will do better in the future, and she believes them.

This turns out to be a terrible mistake.

One following night, a torrential downpour begins. The gorge begins to flood, and the lower dens are quickly evacuated. The cats flee to higher ground, and as she looks around Leafstar realizes that Jupiter, Aurora, and Lichenfur are missing. She leaves her kits with her mates and races to find the three missing cats. She hears faint splashing sounds, and follows them to discover a horrible sight: Jupiter holding Lichenfur's head under a puddle while he and Aurora laugh at the Elder's weak struggles as they call her a "worthless heretic".

Leafstar snarls at Jupiter, telling him to get off of Lichenfur now. He doesn't move... until a new voice echoes from behind them that that's enough and that the Elder is dead. The voice's owner, a plump calico molly, steps forward, followed by a large group of cats. Jupiter and Aurora approach her and bow their heads to her in respect, calling her "mother". She praises them and then turns to Leafstar and introduces herself as Stella, the leader of The Sky's Heirs, and that the gorge is their rightful promised territory. She tells Leafstar that if she doesn't want more of her cats to die, she'll do exactly as they say.

Stella continues, saying that she and her group are the only true heirs of The Sky Cats and that the current SkyClan is a group of unworthy heretics who are undeserving of both the gorge and the name of Sky. She sent two of her children, Aurora and Jupiter, to try and weaken the Clan from the inside. Angering the nearby foxes and badgers and showing them the way to the gorge was part of that. She and her group will not rest until the gorge is theirs, and it is up to Leafstar to make the right choice for her Clan. Stella and her followers (including Aurora and Jupiter) then leave. Leafstar returns to her Clan, relaying the horrible news. The Clan buries Lichenfur and worries about what is to come.

The morning after the flood, the Clan begins to try and clean the gorge and rebuild their destroyed camp. The flood has left the Clan with no clean drinking water, and left them vulnerable to outside threats like the rogue group that showed up during the flood, The Sky's Heirs. Every cat is working as hard as they can. Tangle, now SkyClan's only Elder, mourns his denmate and seems to be having a hard time with being alone. But not all is terrible for Tangle; he seems to have made a bond with Birdpaw due to the apprentice's continuous efforts to interact with the Elder despite his grumpy personality. Sharpclaw has seemingly taken up most of the heavy physical labor (though his clanmates make sure he doesn't overwork himself).

Leafstar tries to dislodge a large branch alongside Cora as Stormkit, Rainkit, and Firekit watch them. They ask questions and want to help with the branch, distracting the two. They then panic upon seeing storm clouds in the sky, but Cora reassures them that no more rain is coming. Clovertail notices their predicament with the kits and comes by to take the kits to play somewhere that they won't be in the way. Leafstar is grateful that she has her mates and her Clan to help her with the kits, knowing that she'd probably drive herself to exhaustion if she was alone. She wonders how her own mother did it by herself with her and her siblings as she and Cora finish moving the branch.

When she checks on the rest of the Clan, Echosong announces that Cherryblossom is expecting kits, much to the molly's joy (and embarrassment, she didn't plan on becoming pregnant in a situation like this). Vegastep pads over to Leafstar and asks her if she thinks that the flood was a sign from StarClan, a look of concern on xir face. Before Leafstar can answer, Sparrowchirp slips on the wet rock and dislocates his shoulder. His mate Lilydance rushes off to get Echosong, who then tends to his shoulder. Ritafang takes over moving the log that Sparrowchirp was trying to move, her large size making that easy. She says she can help with more of the debris, but her brother Fiddleheart scoldingly tells her to rest after this one and that she's not invincible.

Leafstar sees her kits playing with a strange mouse that isn't a mouse at all. She asks them what it is and where they got it, and they say that they got it from Billystorm's Twolegs. They also say that Billystorm had offered them to live with his Twolegs, saying that it was safer than Clan life. Leafstar is incredibly upset and feels betrayed, and she publicly confronts Billystorm. Billystorm insists that the gorge isn't safe, and the flood, the fox attack, and the arrival of The Sky's Heirs proved that. He just wants his family to be safe, that's all! Leafstar banishes him from SkyClan on the spot. She and her remaining mates argue about this choice. While Echosong disapproves of what Billystorm did, she can understand why he did it, and she doesn't think he should've been banished. Cora, meanwhile, agrees with Leafstar, saying that Billystorm would've stolen their kits.

Soon after, Leafstar's kits go missing. She at first thinks that Billystorm must've taken them, but when she goes to Twolegplace to see them, he is horrified that they're missing and insists that he doesn't know where they are either. He follows Leafstar back to SkyClan to help her search for their kits despite his prior banishment. A pair of rogue cats arrive at the SkyClan camp, introducing themselves as members of The Sky's Heirs. They tell Leafstar that they have her kits and that they will not be harmed... That is, they won't be harmed if SkyClan gives into their group's demands and abandons the gorge for good and gives up the name of SkyClan.

They tell Leafstar that her group has three days to make their decision and then leave. All of SkyClan is enraged by this, not just Leafstar and her kits' other parents. How dare these fox-hearts use the lives of innocent kits as bargaining chips to get what they want?! Shrewtooth and Shortwhisker sneak out on a patrol together, returning with the news that they followed the scent of the two members of The Sky's Heirs back to the group's camp, which is close by. Under Leafstar's orders, SkyClan prepares for battle.

A day later, they storm The Sky's Heirs' camp. A vicious battle ensues, though Leafstar notes that Stella, Jupiter, and Aurora don't participate, instead ordering the others to fight for them. Leafstar finds her kits in a small area with a tortoiseshell tom guarding them. Leafstar attacks the tom, but notes that he doesn't really fight back, despite being an adult cat. He falls over and wails for mercy, despite the fact that she hadn't injured him that badly. Leafstar, Cora, and Billystorm each grab a kit and flee. A massive group of Heir cats come running, exclaiming something about "The Prophet" being wounded and needing help.

SkyClan manages to defeat most of the cats, however, and when Sharpclaw goes to attack the now-unguarded Stella directly, she panics and orders her cats to flee, and they do. She tells Leafstar that the gorge will be theirs someday, The Prophet has seen so. They'll be back, she swears, and they will kill SkyClan. With that, the group leaves. SkyClan regather in the gorge, safe once more. Billystorm apologizes to Leafstar, Cora, and Echosong, saying that he will give up his kittypet life entirely and become a full warrior of SkyClan. They accept him back, and as they watch their kits play, Cora asks if The Sky's Heirs will come back and make true on their threats. Leafstar says that they can try, and the book ends.

Tawny didn’t name one of her kit after tiger? GOOD! Like seriously girl name if your son after hitler

So who is goldenkit and who is midnightkit?

Yeah, I always thought her naming a kid after her asshole dad was... a choice. So I decided to have her name one of her sons (canonically called Tigerkit) after her mom instead. As for Dawnkit's renaming to Midnightkit, that's more due to a personal headcanon I have in regards to ShadowClan's naming conventions; namely that they don't use names that refer to the daytime or light (fire or moon-based names are okay though) very often if at all, seeing it as being bad luck to do so. The only canon name like that that I ended up keeping was Brightflower's (Yellowfang's mother), because "bright" can also mean intelligence.

(It's also a headcanon of mine that ShadowClan sees cats with predominately white pelts as being bad luck in general, and that it was assumed that Blizzardwing had been cursed when his vitiligo began manifesting itself when he was an apprentice, but that's really not related to this)

It's also a legacy name of sorts similar to her brother Goldenkit's name, but in reference to Midnight the badger.

Rewrite Plot Changes: Dark River

Trigger warning in this book for suicidal ideation from a character (they get better though)

In the prologue, a cat named Fallen Leaves is headed into the tunnels beneath his group’s territory in order to prove himself worthy of his adult role in the colony. While his mother and some of his friends tell him that he should hold off, it might rain soon, he insists that he’s put it off long enough and goes anyway. As he descends into the tunnels, he hears the sound of wood being cut with a claw. He begins going through the tunnels, but as the other cats had predicted, it begins to rain, and the tunnels begin to flood. As Fallen Leaves flails about in the water, he catches sight of a strange translucent figure observing him. 

Upon seeing the creature, Fallen Leaves’ eyes widen in shock and he desperately cries out “Please, Lord, save me-” before the current drags him under from the last time and he drowns. The being doesn't react except to make another scratch across the one they made when the young tom first came in, picking up the stick they had carved and then disappearing into the darkness. 

Picking up where the last book left off, Jaypaw has discovered his ability to walk in the dreams of other cats and is receiving guidance from Doveheart, a StarClan Seer, on how to properly utilize his abilities. He isn’t sure how to breach the subject of having magic powers to his littermates, though, since neither of them have shown any powers of their own (they have, just not that he’s witnessed). 

Meanwhile, Lionpaw has continued to train with Tiger and Mud in his dreams and is rapidly improving his fighting skills. He has also deepened his friendship with Heatherpaw with the pair’s encouragement and the two of them meet regularly on ThunderClan and WindClan’s shared border. However, after they nearly get caught by multiple cats from both Clans, they decide they can’t meet there anymore. Heatherpaw discovers a massive series of tunnels located beneath WindClan territory, one of which leads into ThunderClan’s territory. Lionpaw and Heatherpaw begin meeting in the tunnels where they can’t be found. Over time, the two create their own imaginary Clan that live in the tunnels that they name DarkClan.

One day, during a training session, Ashface becomes angry at Lionpaw after the apprentice gets exhausted and can’t continue training despite his orders. He lashes out at Lionpaw and insults him before storming off. Tiger then appears and teaches Lionpaw the battle move that Ashface had been trying to teach him. Lionpaw is glad that he has mentors that care about him to pick up for Ashface.

There is a brief battle between ThunderClan and WindClan over territory a week later, and Lionpaw realizes that his close friendship with Heatherpaw might get either or both of them killed if they end up having to face each other in a battle. That night when the two meet in the tunnels, he reluctantly breaks off their friendship. She’s sad and angry, telling him that she hopes he’s happy being a warrior after losing a friend.

While out on a hunting assessment with Mousepaw, Sootpaw breaks a leg and has to be confined to the Medicine Den as he heals. Jaypaw does his best to ignore the constant haze of depression that he picks up on from the other apprentice but it steadily increases in both volume and intensity until one day when Leafpool and Hollypaw are out gathering herbs. Jaypaw feels like something is wrong in the Medicine Den and he discovers Sootpaw completely breaking down. Sootpaw tells Jaypaw that he believes that he is better off dead than alive.

He continues through his tears, telling Jaypaw that he wants more than anything to be like his namesake, to live up to the legacy of his uncle Sootstreak, but he fails everytime. He feels like all he does is let others down, and he feels sick and numb every waking moment of his life. He thinks that something’s wrong with his soul, and that StarClan obviously wants him to die if living is this painful. Jaypaw is overwhelmed by all the crushingly powerful negative emotions swirling around, unable to differentiate which are his and which are Sootpaw’s, and also just doesn't know how to respond to this. In his confusion and panic, he chooses the worst possible option, yelling at Sootpaw to just shut up and calm down.

Leafpool and Hollypaw come into the Medicine Den just as a sobbing Jaypaw is yelling at an also crying Sootpaw asking him how he thinks his family would feel if he killed himself. Leafpool quickly assesses the situation, realizing that neither tom is in a good mental state and trying to scold them or keep them together would just make everything worse. She tells Hollypaw to get Jaypaw away from camp and calm him down and rushes to Sootpaw to try to console him enough to talk. Hollypaw is upset at Jaypaw and yells at him, which just makes everything worse. The two eventually just shout all their rage out and start crying out of pure exhaustion. Jaypaw reveals his emotion-sensing power to Hollypaw in a moment of vulnerability. Curious, Hollypaw asks about it and he tells her about the prophecy.

Hollypaw then tells her brother about the odd sick feelings that she has sometimes, and the two theorize that it might be her power but neither have any idea what said power might be. Jaypaw wonders if she may be able to sense… something, and that’s what her power is. The two head back to camp, deciding they’ll do some experiments later on to figure out what Hollypaw’s power is. On the way back, Jaypaw feels a force tugging at his mind and hears a strange voice. When he and Hollypaw follow it, they find a strange stick covered in vertical and horizontal notches. Hollypaw questions what the notches might mean, and she and Jaypaw take the weird stick home with them. Hopefully it’s not haunted!

When they get back to camp, Jaypaw seeks out Sootpaw in order to apologize for what he’d said. Sootpaw is apparently in a mandated conversation with his parents, supervised by Leafpool. Even though both apprentices know it’s most likely incredibly personal, they listen in because they’re nosy little shits. Sootpaw’s parents are incredibly saddened that he felt like he had to be just like Sootstreak to make them happy. They tell him they love him because he’s their kit, not because of any resemblance to his late uncle. He then quietly asks them a question that’s clearly been weighing heavy on his mind for a while: would his parents still love him if he was a molly? The answer is of course yes, and Sootpaw is asked if she wants to change her name. She says that she’ll think about it and embraces her parents again before they exit the Medicine Den.

Hollypaw smacks Jaypaw to remind him what he’s here to do, and he apologizes to Sootpaw for being insensitive. Sootpaw tells him that she’s still upset at him for yelling at her, but she accepts his apology. That night, Jaypaw dreams of a strange presence that tells him that the two of them have a lot of work to do. When Jaypaw asks who it is he’s speaking to, he’s just told that it isn’t time for that yet. The only other thing he is told is to keep The Record of Ages (which is apparently the stick he and Hollypaw found) safe and guarded until next he is visited. Upon waking up, he curses StarClan, asking why they have to be so cryptic all the time and can’t be straightforward. 

Little does he know, it wasn't StarClan he was speaking to…

At the next Gathering, RiverClan announces that they have been temporarily forced to live on the island, but don’t give an answer of why when pressed. Willowpaw, the RiverClan Seer apprentice, promises to tell Hollypaw what’s going on later in secret. There are rumors floating around that RiverClan and WindClan are planning to invade each other, concerning the cats present. After the Gathering, Hollypaw sneaks off with Willowpaw as promised, and she takes her to RiverClan’s camp, where Twoleg kits have taken over. Willowpaw reassures her friend, telling her that RiverClan has a plan on how to deal with them and they will reclaim their camp by the next Gathering. However, a RiverClan patrol finds them and Hollypaw is briefly taken captive. Through this ordeal, Hollypaw finally realizes what her Power is: she is able to tell when a cat is lying. Later that day, Squirrelflight comes to retrieve her daughter and scolds Hollypaw for trespassing while they walk back to ThunderClan.

During the period in which Hollypaw goes missing, an anxious Leafpool asks Jaypaw to ask StarClan where she is, but despite his Power he can’t do it on command and the two fight. He goes out for a walk to calm down and gets another strange vision. He finds himself in what smells like a burrow or a tunnel with the strange presence from before. The voice from before finally introduces himself as Lord Rock the Everlasting, God of Fate, and says that to fix the present, Jaypaw must learn about the past. (Jaypaw has no idea what a “God” is and also thinks Rock is weird). Jaypaw can hear him scratching on wood. Another cat enters the tunnels, walking past the two seemingly not noticing them. Rock makes another scratch on the wood at his paws. Jaypaw asks Rock what the scratches are for, and Rock tells him to wait, the answer will be clear shortly, to which Jaypaw groans aloud in exasperation. 

Outside the tunnel, cracks of thunder can be heard, and soon after rain begins to fall. The rain keeps increasing in intensity as the tunnel around them floods. Jaypaw feels the other cat’s terror as he tries to outrun the water and flee the tunnels, fails, and drowns. Rock makes another scratch on the wood, and Jaypaw realizes what the notches on the stick he found mean: they represent cats who went into the tunnels and never came back out. Rock tells Jaypaw that there will soon be more souls in the tunnels, and that will be up to Jaypaw to decide their fate. Jaypaw then wakes up with a feeling of dread pooling in his stomach.

The following morning, Firestar asks Leafpool, Jaypaw, and Hollypaw to travel to WindClan to try to mediate the growing conflict. The three talk to a reluctant Onestar, but their conversation is interrupted by a monarch named Meadowgust running around camp looking for their kits in a panic. Some other WindClan cats make the assumption that RiverClan stole the kits. The Clan enters a frenzy and declares war on RiverClan, and Leafpool and her apprentices are forced to flee back to ThunderClan. 

When they get back, Jaypaw has a brief vision where he smells dirt and recognizes it as the tunnels from his dream. He realizes that that must be where the kits are, but he has no idea how to enter the tunnels. Luckily, he tells his siblings and Lionpaw reveals that he knows an entrance to the tunnels. The three of them enter the tunnels to search for the missing kits and run into Heatherpaw and Breezepaw, who are also there looking for the kits. The group hears the faint voice of a cat telling them to follow his directions and he will lead them to the kits. Heatherpaw and Lionpaw take the lead to follow the voice, since the two of them know the tunnels the best. As he follows them, Jaypaw hears the faint sounds of scratching on wood…

The group finds the three kits, who are fortunately unharmed and happy to see them. They tell them about the nice tom who said he’d get them help and then ask to go home to their parent. Jaypaw then hears a sound he wishes that he didn’t hear: the sound of rain echoing from above. He realizes that this was what Rock had mentioned earlier and they need to get out of the tunnels before they all drown like the cat from the past. The voice from before speaks again, telling them that he’ll get them out alive. He guides them to a river in the cave. They jump in and latch onto a log floating in the river. The river leads out into the lake, and the group makes it to shore. 

The kits are returned to WindClan, where Meadowgust is overjoyed that his children are safe. WindClan decides to hold a Clan meeting later to discuss what to do about the tunnels, and RiverClan finally goes home… not before the RiverClan warrior Beechfur and Meadowgust have a secretive conversation amongst themselves. Wonder what that was all about?

That night, Lionpaw meets with Mud and Tiger to train as usual, and confesses that he misses Heatherpaw and wishes they were still friends. Mud comforts him, saying that friendship is worthless to a warrior, and that he won’t need them after he proves himself. Tiger says that Lionpaw has learned an important lesson, and not to worry, the two of them will make him the greatest warrior ever.

"[Black] WindClan Apprentice": An apprentice encountered by Leafpaw and other ThunderClan cats during the face-off between ThunderClan and WindClan over stolen prey. In canon, this apprentice is described as "bracken colored" but since there are no such apprentices fitting the description at the moment, I made this Ravenpaw (canonically Nightcloud), who is black in color.

"Dead WindClan Tom (Elder)": A cat mentioned by Tallstar as having starved to death during the face-off between ThunderClan and WindClan over stolen prey. This is (or rather was) Redclaw.

"Eagle Talon, Nesting Rock, and Small Brook's Deceased Mother": A member of The Lunar Feles that was one of the many victims of The Beast. She was a Permanent Kit-Guardian and her name was Soaring Bird.

"Unnamed Guard": A member of The Lunar Feles who escorts Willowfur and the other Journey Cats behind the waterfall alongside Nesting Rock. Her name is Pine Root.

"Curious Lunar Feles Kit": The kit who wanders from their mother to sniff the deathberries that are to be used to help kill The Beast but is redirected away from them by Squirrelpaw. This is Brave Heart again, giving his poor mother a heart attack.

"Curious Kit's Mother": The mother of the kit mentioned above. This is a Ranger named Scuttling Mouse.

"[White] WindClan Warrior": A WindClan tom encountered by the returning Journey Cats at the WindClan border. Canonically this cat is described as "pale brown", but since his apprentice Tumblepaw is encountered by the group, I figure he should be the one here instead.

"Scraggly Old Twolegplace Rogue:" A grumpy old tom stuck in the Twoleg cages with Leafpaw and the other captured cats. According to Cody, he raids her housefolks' garage fairly regularly. His name is Craig.

"Kidnapped Rogue": A cat in the cage beneath Coal's that expresses concern for him after he begins bleeding. Her name is Nana.

"Mangy Tabby Rogue": Another of the kidnapped cats. His name is Patches.

"Matted Rogue Tom": Another of the kidnapped cats. His name is Matthew.

"Brown Tabby Rogue Tom": Another of the kidnapped cats, nearly knocks Squirrelpaw over running away after he's freed. His name is Racer.

"Cody's Rehomed Kits": The kits Cody mentions having been taken away from her by her housefolk and given to other housefolk. Since the number is never stated, I chose five since housecats would presumably have much larger litters than wild cats. There were two toms and three mollies in the litter- the two toms being named Wyatt and Fuzz (who eventually becomes mates with Barley's sister Violet), and the three mollies are named Missy, Cassandra, and Sally.

"Tortoiseshell ShadowClan Molly": The molly that Squirrelpaw helps by carrying one of her kits as they flee the Large Monsters. Squirrelpaw originally assumes the cat is Tallpoppy, but this is actually Fernshade.

"Tortoiseshell Molly's Two Kits": The two kits mentioned above. They are two mollies named Sleekkit and Belladonnakit, and they are the (surviving) children of Wolfstep and Fernshade (specifically their second litter).

"ShadowClan Apprentice": A young cat seen at Fourtrees sharing tongues with Tawnypelt. This is Snowpaw.

"RiverClan Molly": A cat who tells Leopardstar that the cats haven't hunted yet when she asks if everyone is ready to leave. This is Mazegilltuft.

"RiverClan Molly's Kit": The kit of the molly mentioned above. This is a new cat, Hummingbirdkit. She is the younger sister of Swallowtail and Kingfishercry. She was born of a single-kit litter.

"Kit Carried By Crowpaw": A kit that Crowpaw helps carry along the journey. This is Sorrelshine and Sharpears' (canon Tornear) daughter Thistlekit.

"Three RiverClan Apprentices:" A trio of young cats that get stuck in mud in the path of several Monsters due to Leopardstar hesitating giveing her Clan the signal to cross. They all are fortunately saved in time. These are Muddypaw, Darkpaw, and Beaverpaw (canon Volepaw).

"Overeager ShadowClan Apprentice": An apprentice who darts forward towards the Thunderpath before Blackstar gives the signal to cross. Tawnypelt orders him to stop and come back, and he sheepishly does so. This is Smokepaw.

"Boldest Lunar Feles Kit": A bold kit who approaches Birchkit and the other Clan kits and offers to share prey with them. Her name is Sharp Fang.

"Rude Lunar Feles Kit": The kit who asks his mother who Tallstar is, calling him a "skinny old raven". His mother cuffs him and chastises him for his rudeness, but Tallstar thinks the kit's remark was funny and just laughs it off. His name is Fallen Stone.

"Rude Kit's Embarrassed Mother": The mother of the kit mentioned above, who swiftly punishes her son after he insults Tallstar. This is the Ranger River Stone.

Starlight

"Two Very Unfortunate ShadowClan Cats": A pair of ShadowClan Warriors that end up plunging to their deaths in the ThunderClan camp by falling and breaking their necks. They are Brownthorn and Swiftslash.

"Floss' Taken Kits": The litter of kits that Floss gives birth to that are then taken by the Twolegs at The Horseplace. Before they were taken, she and her mates named them Wheat, Orchid, Daffodil, and Marigold. Wheat was the only tom of the litter, the rest were all mollies. Once again, since a number was never mentioned, I randomized the number.

"Young ShadowClan Warrior": At a Gathering, this young cat is seen sitting with Tawnypelt and purring. This is Snowbird.

Her parents were both ThunderClan cats, but genetically she isn't related to any other cats that are alive during the time she is to help with genetic diversity. She and Willowmoon (Darkstripe, Graystripe, Sootstreak, Sorreltail, and Rainwhisker's mama) are best friends and have been since they were kits. They were a particularly wild pair but mellowed out somewhat upon reaching adulthood, although they still play pranks on each other.

At the time of Into the Wild, she is the mother of three kits, who she had with an unknown cat, presumed to be a loner. These kits are:

Antkit, a small black molly with pale blue eyes. The only molly of her litter. Loud and playful. The moment she saw Firepaw, she immediately commented on how bright his fur was. She would likely have been a good Scout like her mother if not for her tragic death in the kit raid perpetrated by ShadowClan, when the Warrior that tried to take her accidentally but down on her neck too hard, crushing her throat and killing her instantly. She was given the Star Name of Antchaser.

Thornclaw, a golden-brown tabby tom with black stripes and pale blue eyes. He and his brother Brackenfur look identical but act so wildly different from one another to the point that it's impossible to mistake one for the other. Thornclaw is aggressive and snappy but very vigilant and detail-oriented. He's always been a bit of a loner but one cat whose presence he can always tolerate is Brackenfur. He strongly dislikes loud places and cats and would much rather spend his time patrolling at the Clan's borders by himself. He has a perfect memory and could likely navigate the borders missing all of his senses, which makes him ideal as a Scout. He never had any desire for a mate or kits, seeing his brother's kits as being more than enough noise and excitement for him.

Brackenfur, a golden-brown tabby tom with black stripes and amber eyes. He and his brother Thornclaw look identical but act so wildly different from one another to the point that it's impossible to mistake one for the other. Brackenfur is relaxed and mellow by nature and is empathetic and perceptive. He became a Hunter when he reached Warrior-hood, but he's really more of a jack-of-all-trades than a master of one like his brother is. He did become Deputy for a while but chose to step down as Firestar's life count got to one due to not wanting to be Leader. He became mates with Dustpelt, Ferncloud, and Sorreltail, siring Sorreltail's single litter (Molepaw, Poppyfrost, Sootshine, and Honeydrop).

Detailed Rewrite Plot Summary: The Sight

Skywatcher’s moons-old prophecy has come to pass. Firestar sees the light of StarClan in the eyes of his daughter Squirrelflight’s three kits, and wonders what powers these kittens possess. Said kittens- Jaykit, Hollykit, and Lionkit- are stated to not have another biological parent around, as Squirrelflight had them with a loner. The closest thing they have to a second parent is their mother’s best friend Shrewmoon, who they call “uncle”. They are also spoiled rotten by their adoring grandparents Sandstorm and Firestar (and told many stories about their other grandpa, Graystripe), their aunt Leafpool, and their other “uncle” Brambleflower.

Jaykit, Hollykit, and Lionkit are becoming apprentices at the beginning of the book. Jaykit is stated to be blind, which is a subject of bullying from Berrypaw, an apprentice (despite the efforts of Berrypaw’s parents and family to get him to stop because that’s not okay). Jaykit decides to become a warrior apprentice to prove Berrypaw wrong, even though he has a strong interest in StarClan and really wants to train as a Seer under his aunt Leafpool. He is mentored by Longtail, a blind warrior. Lionkit wants to be the best and coolest warrior the Clans have ever seen, and is apprenticed to the warrior Ashface, who seems… overly strict and a bit stern, but it’s probably nothing to worry about! Their sister Hollykit has a strong interest in herbs, and as such is apprenticed to their aunt, the Medicine Cat Leafpool. 

However, their apprenticeships don’t go as intended. Hollypaw has a lot of difficulties with memorizing herbs and their applications but doesn’t tell Leafpool because she thinks it should be easy and is afraid that if she asks for help Leafpool will think she’s not serious about the role. She also notices that she gets an odd sickly feeling around Leafpool, a similar one that she felt when Berrypaw told them untrue stories, but attributes this to her stress. She suffers in silence.

Lionpaw’s mentor Ashface treats him poorly, putting him in incredibly dangerous situations and making him do tasks for others that the apprentice hasn't learned how to do yet, which embarrasses and humiliates him constantly. But he isn't able to prove it since Ashface plays the part of a strict but fair mentor whenever anyone else is around and Lionpaw never actually gets injured or hurt no matter what happens to him. He suffers in silence.

Jaypaw finds being a warrior apprentice unfulfilling and empty. No matter how much he improves at battling or hunting, he doesn't feel happy and wishes that he was in the Medicine Den. Every time he kills a piece of prey, he feels overwhelming agony like he’s the one who’s dying. Being in camp feels disorienting, like a million claws are digging into him and pulling him in different directions. But he can’t ask to change roles. If he does, won’t he just be admitting to himself that he’s worthless? He suffers in silence.

One day the Elder and former Medicine Cat Yellowfang picks up on Hollypaw’s distress and tells her that she needs help. She arranges a meeting between her, Hollypaw, and Leafpool and they talk about what Hollypaw has difficulty with without judgment. While Hollypaw is still nervous and embarrassed, they reassure her that they’ll teach her in whatever way works best for her. With these new accommodations and support system, Hollypaw begins to thrive in the role of Healer.

One night while asleep, Lionpaw finds himself in a strange forest. He is afraid of his surroundings at first, but he soon makes the acquaintance of two friendly cats who introduce themselves as Mud and Tiger. They ask if he’s alright, he looks distressed, and Lionpaw bursts into tears and spills out everything he’s been feeling about Ashface, how his mentor makes him feel so small and worthless all the time, and how he can’t tell anyone because no one would believe him and he’d just get in more trouble. Mud and Tiger ask him if he’d like them to be his mentors too. They’ll train him to be better than Ashface could ever make him, and then he can prove himself and the tom can never make him feel small again. He enthusiastically agrees.

Longtail notices Jaypaw’s sulking and he talks to him. When Jaypaw blurts out that he wants to be a Medicine Cat apprentice but worries that that would be admitting he’s too weak to be a warrior, Longtail’s anger becomes almost crushing. Longtail immediately cuts him off, telling him that he isn't weak at all. He tells Jaypaw that the only reason that he isn't performing as well as the other warrior apprentices isn’t because of his blindness holding him back in some way, it’s because his heart isn’t in it. Longtail says that Jaypaw shouldn’t waste his life doing something he hates just because he wants other cats to think something about him. With Longtail’s encouragement, Jaypaw becomes a Seer apprentice under Leafpool. He can sense both her and his sister’s joy, and the fact that that doesn't overwhelm him makes him happy too.

During a Gathering, Lionpaw meets Heatherpaw of WindClan, who he really likes, and her mentor Crowfeather, who he isn’t sure about. He also watches Mousepaw fawn over his RiverClan crush friend Minnowpaw while his littermates look on in embarrassment. In the middle of the Gathering, a pair of cats approach the group, a molly wearing a collar and a large gray tom. The gathered cats are only briefly hostile before Firestar launches himself off of the platform with the other Leaders and tackles the tom in an embrace. The tom is Graystripe, Firestar and Sandstorm’s mate and Lionpaw’s third grandparent, who has been missing for moons after being taken by Twolegs. He introduces the molly with him as Millie, a former kittypet who chose to come with him to search for the Clans. Graystripe is welcomed back by cats of all the Clans, and he and Millie head back to the ThunderClan camp after the Gathering is over.

Sandstorm tackles Graystripe when she sees him come into camp, just as overjoyed as Firestar was. Graystripe is ecstatic to learn he has grandkits and begins fawning over Lionpaw, Jaypaw, and Hollypaw, much to their embarrassment. Millie is awkward and nervous, but Graystripe comforts her. She explains to Firestar that she’s expecting kits, and her Twolegs took her first litter from her against her will because she didn't mate with the tom they brought over. The litter she’s carrying aren’t the tom’s either, and she wants to keep them. She is welcomed to the Clan and is escorted to the Nursery by Ferncloud and Daisy.

One of the nights following Graystripe’s return, Jaypaw goes to sleep but wakes up in a place filled with strange scents that he doesn’t recognize. Just then, he smells a scent that he does recognize: that of Littlecloud, ShadowClan’s Medicine Cat. He deduces that this place is the ShadowClan camp, and hides while he listens in on a conversation between a ShadowClan Hunter and Littlecloud. The Hunter has brought home a bird that looks strange in a way neither of them seem to have seen before. Jaypaw notes that the bird’s scent is wrong, and his thoughts are confirmed when Littlecloud uses his claws to tear the bird open and then both cats jump away, screeching that its stomach is writhing with maggots. Jaypaw snaps awake, tasting the rotting meat on his tongue like he’d bitten into it.

Once Leafpool and Hollypaw awaken the following morning, Jaypaw tells Leafpool about his dream, but she tells him that it sounds like just a normal, albeit odd, dream. He believes that it was a warning about something, and is upset that she isn't listening to him. They fight until Hollypaw gets between them and calms them down. Later that day, Yellowfang goes to sleep and doesn’t wake up again, having peacefully passed on from (very) old age. The whole Clan mourns her passing and celebrates her life.

Firestar relays Yellowfang’s passing to the other Clans at the next Gathering. Littlecloud expresses his condolences, but says that he has a concerning vision that he feels that he needs to share with all the Clans. In his dream, a cat brought a strange new bird into camp, and when it was bitten into it contained maggots and smelled of ThunderClan. Blackstar accuses Firestar of somehow upsetting StarClan and says that that must be why the Clans had such a hard leaf-bare. 

The cats at the Gathering begin to fight amongst themselves upon hearing this, and despite the efforts of Firestar, Leopardstar, and Onestar, show no signs of calming down. Squirrelflight declares that this sight upsets StarClan, drawing attention to the clouds that have begun to cover the moon. She offers a sort of bonding activity for all four Clans, a special Gathering where the apprentices will all compete in a friendly competition. The clouds uncover the moon, showing StarClan’s approval, and the Clans make a promised date and time for the event.

On the day of the contest, Lionpaw and the other ThunderClan Warrior apprentices head out to the area it’s being held. Jaypaw and Hollypaw promise that they’ll cheer for him in spirit. Hollypaw remarks that it’s a pity that they don’t have any competition for the Medicine Cat apprentices. Jaypaw sarcastically asks her what they would be competing for, “Fastest to Receive a Vision From StarClan”? Hollypaw begins to scold Jaypaw for the joke when he suddenly wins the competition he suggested by receiving a vision. He feels as though he’s choking on dirt, unable to breathe, as the fading scents of fox and badger fill his nostrils where the dirt doesn’t get in. He can distantly hear someone screaming for Sootpaw, and he realizes that his clanmate is in danger.

Jaypaw and Hollypaw race to where the competition is taking place. It is revealed that, during the hunting competition, Sootpaw and Breezepaw of WindClan fell into a collapsing badger set. Jaypaw and Hollypaw manage to save the two just in time with help from Crowfeather, who turns out to be Breezepaw’s parent. The Leaders declare a tie, since each of the Clans won a category. Heatherpaw of WindClan won the tree-climbing competition, Adderpaw of ShadowClan won the hunting competition, Minnowpaw of RiverClan won the fishing competition, and Lionpaw won the fighting competition (using battle techniques he learned from Mud and Tiger). Jaypaw and Hollypaw are also celebrated for helping save Sootpaw and Breezepaw.

That night, Jaypaw has another odd dream in another strange new place. He hears his grandpa Firestar talking to a cat whose voice and scent Jaypaw doesn’t recognize, who tells Firestar the same prophecy as mentioned at the beginning of the book and also tells him that the prophesied kits have now been born. Suddenly, Firestar notices Jaypaw, approaching him and asking what the apprentice is doing in his dream. Jaypaw wakes up and wonders what just happened as the book ends.

Detailed Rewrite Plot Summary: Sunset

The prologue has another meeting in the Dark Forest between Tigerstar, Brambleflower, Hawkfrost, Panthercroak, and Muddyclaw. Brambleflower can't stop staring at Muddyclaw. If Hawkfrost was in fact telling the truth to him about what happened to Darkheart, she is incredibly dangerous. But he isn't sure if Hawkfrost is trustworthy, especially because he's interacting with Muddyclaw like Darkheart never even existed and he doesn't care about what happened to him. Suddenly, a new cat appears, a familiar face to every cat there. It's Tawnypelt, and boy is she pissed.

Tigerstar begins to greet her, saying how he's so happy she finally decided to join them, and she immediately cuts him off, saying that she isn't here for him. She first whacks Panthercroak upside the head and asks him just what he thinks he's doing here. When he replies with "Hanging out with my family and training?" she hits him again and yells "Wrong answer! You're being indoctrinated to be this fox-heart's pawn in the living world! Remember what he made you do in WindClan?!" Panthercroak looks at Tigerstar with new eyes, finally realizing the truth of the situation and where Darkheart must have gone thanks to his elder sister's words.

"Did. Did you kill Darkheart because he left? Is that why he isn't here anymore?" He asks Tigerstar in horror, backing away towards Tawnypelt. Muddyclaw snarls at him. "Darkheart's gone because he chose to leave our family! Are you sure you wanna leave too, you damn mouse-heart?!" "Yes!" Panthercroak howls. He looks at Tigerstar, snarling out "You... You're a monster! I should've believed my clanmates when they talked about how awful you were! Stay away from me!" before fleeing and vanishing from the dreamscape.

Tawnypelt then turns to Muddyclaw and Hawkfrost. "I'm not going to even try to convince the two of you. You've both clearly already made your decision to turn your backs on your Clan and your real family." Muddyclaw snaps back "Father, Hawkfrost, and Brambleflower are my only family! Leopardstar is worthless as a Leader and so is Firestar! After we kill them, Hawkfrost and Brambleflower can become Leaders and father will rule the forest through them!"

For his part, Hawkfrost just calmly smiles at Tawnypelt and says "It's too bad you don't see the potential of what father can offer you. I would've liked to get to know you better by ruling beside you and Brambleflower as co-leaders of TigerClan." Brambleflower, meanwhile, is in shock. Tigerstar wants him to kill Firestar. His mentor. The cat that he considers to be a father figure. The cat who told Brambleflower that he was part of his family... His mind whirls as he trembles, shaking as a maelstrom of emotions that has been building for moons begins to well up inside of him, climbing higher and higher, reaching a fever pitch.

Tawnypelt finally turns to her littermate to yell at him for being with Tigerstar, but much to her surprise, Brambleflower explodes with a shout of "I'm done!" before she can say anything. They all look at him in shock as he continues to speak to Tigerstar, looking his father in the eyes for the very first time. "I was so afraid of you that I did everything you asked me to; afraid of what you'd do to me if I tried to stop doing what you asked, afraid of how my clanmates would react if they knew I even spoke to you, afraid of the cat you're trying to make me become... But I'm done with being afraid of you! And I'm done with you!"

He then makes a solemn vow that he will be a greater warrior, a greater cat, than Tigerstar ever was, and he'll do it by serving his Clan with all he has. Tawnypelt smiles at him and nods in approval, and then tells Tigerstar the same vow that Brambleflower just gave. The two then exit the dreamscape together without so much as looking behind them once as Tigerstar rages at them.

After he throws an absolutely terrifying fit, Tigerstar turns to the two that remain, Hawkfrost and Muddyclaw. He tells them that their worthless siblings aren't necessary anyway, that he can rule the forest through the two of them just fine. Muddyclaw enthusiastically agrees, but while Hawkfrost nods along, his eyes narrow as if he's deep in thought...

Back in ThunderClan, Sorreltail's litter has opened their eyes, but something seems to be wrong with Molekit. It is discovered that he is partially blind. His parents question whether or not they need to change his name, as they had named him due to him looking like a baby mole after being born, but now that they've discovered that he's visually-impaired the name could be construed as being intentionally cruel. Molekit butts in to say that he likes his name the way it is, and so it is decided that he will remain Molekit. Accommodations are put in place for him to use as he needs them in the future, but other than that he is treated like any other kit.

Also in the Nursery, little Berrykit gives his poor mother a heart attack after he happily calls Cloudtail and Brightheart his "other parents" and upon seeing their confusion, he cheerfully informs them that he calls them that because "mama like-likes you!" Daisy is absolutely mortified and apologizes to them repeatedly until they reveal that they both "like-like" her too. Now, she is both flustered and mortified! Yay? Whitepaw is upset by her parents' cringy behavior... and that she now has three annoying younger siblings after previously being a spoiled only child. But she does like Daisy, and over time she slowly comes around to her new step-siblings too.

However, not everything is sunshine and roses, and tensions in the Clans are still rising.

Later, fox traps are discovered in the forest, and cats are warned against springing them. Unfortunately, Berrykit accidentally ends up springing one and it cuts off his tail. His family do their best to comfort him, and throw a little funeral for his tail because he insists on it. He also insists that his tail be given a Star Name too upon learning about them "to honor it" and a bemused Firestar dubs it "Tailcrawl"... and immediately gets lectured by Yellowfang, who says that Star Names are serious business and that Firestar should be ashamed. And then she dramatically exclaims that now there's just going to be a random disembodied tail in StarClan, and what are their ancestors going to think, and she can't even finish that sentence before she and everyone else bursts out laughing at the absurdity of the mental image that conjures up.

Firestar is lured into the forest by a cat that he only sees glimpses of out of the corner of his eye and gets caught in a fox trap. He is in the process of losing a life to the device when Brambleflower follows his panicked noises and sees him. Muddyclaw appears right after, smirking at Firestar as she watches him die. Brambleflower snarls at her, asking if she and Hawkfrost did this. She replies that no, this wasn't their father's plan, but she's happy to take advantage of this on his behalf. She'll let Firestar lose all nine of his lives, and then she'll run to ThunderClan and tell them that she saw Brambleflower kill him so that he'll spend the rest of his worthless life regretting crossing their father. Brambleflower tells her he's not going to let that happen, she lunges at him, and they begin to fight.

Suddenly, Hawkfrost shows up, but instead of helping Muddyclaw attack Brambleflower, he grabs her and throws her off of him, telling Brambleflower to free Firestar while he distracts her. Muddyclaw shrieks in anger, asking Hawkfrost if he was going to betray their father the entire time. Hawkfrost replies that he did everything Tigerstar asked of him for the sake of helping his family and making them happy, but he has finally realized that in the end all he succeeded in doing was make them and himself miserable. He's done being Tigerstar's errand boy, and he kills Muddyclaw just as Brambleflower frees Firestar from the trap, snarling that this is revenge for what she did to Darkheart, and to tell their father that their partnership is over when she gets to where she's going. The lake runs red with her blood.

Firestar, having finally come back from losing his eighth life, asks the two what in StarClan's name just happened. Hawkfrost says that while he'd love to explain, he has an urgent appointment with Leopardstar to talk to her about stepping down as Deputy, and runs off. Brambleflower tells Firestar everything about what happened with Tigerstar and his family, sobbing and begging for forgiveness. Firestar forgives him, although he says that he wishes Brambleflower had come to him sooner. Brambleflower then asks if he can ask Firestar for one more thing as the two walk back to the Clan.

An undescribed unknown cat emerges from the bushes after the two leave, having have been laying hidden in wait there. The cat snarls, asking why the two RiverClan cats were even there in the first place. The cat kicks Muddyclaw's limp body in rage, saying that she deserved what she got for interfering in their affairs. The cat then stalks off in the direction of the ThunderClan camp, muttering about having to make a new plan after wasting so much time on this one...

The next Gathering, everything goes smoothly for once, by some miracle of StarClan. Brackenfur is revealed to be the new Deputy of ThunderClan, and Brambleflower's request turns out to have been to be demoted from the Deputy position, since he felt he had betrayed Firestar's trust and thus wasn't worthy (Firestar had insisted Brambleflower wasn't "unworthy" by any means, but he still wanted to step down). Brambleflower mingles with the other cats there, with Squirrelflight and Shrewmoon joining him. With the Tigerstar drama behind them, Brambleflower and Squirrelflight have finally mended their relationship and are friends again.

True to his word, Hawkfrost has stepped down as RiverClan's Deputy, requesting that the position be returned to Mistyfoot. Mothwing tells Leafpool that he had apologized for what he had done and asked her if she wanted to become a Warrior again, saying that if she did he would tell Breezeripple and Leopardstar that he had faked the prophecy without her knowledge and would accept whatever punishment they gave him without complaint. Mothwing has actually found more happiness as a Medicine Cat than she did as a Warrior, though, and told him to just not do her any more favors, to which he agreed.

And, funnily enough, it turns out that Breezeripple had known the prophecy was fake the entire time, but was under the assumption that Mothwing had faked it because she wanted to become a Medicine Cat ("You could've just asked to be my apprentice like a normal cat instead of faking an entire prophecy, you know"). And, since Mothwing is a Healer and not a Seer, her lack of belief in and inability to speak to StarClan isn't considered to really be a problem (although it is a bit odd in the eyes of her clanmates). She just needs to find a Seer apprentice once Breezeripple retires!

Leafpool congratulates her friend on her good fortune as she rejoins the ThunderClan delegates as they head back home, noting that her nausea that she'd developed that morning still hadn't gone away. She lays down in the Medicine Den and tries to sleep, but her illness keeps her awake. Eventually, she falls asleep, but her dreams are fitful.
