I thought she was really happy because her smile was heaven shining down on earth. It was immaculate, probably the best smile I’ve seen so far. I thought she was really happy because fireflies and butterflies danced with her. They were all in awe of her glow. They were infected by her glee.
I thought she was really happy when I saw roses grew from her, and how I’ve seen them cling desperately around her like she was the water sustaining their life. I thought she was really happy when the oceans never stopped waving at her, wanting to get a little of her attention, trying to show off just so she’d dive in to their welcoming breeze.
I thought she was really when nights became short because the sun was eager to shine for her. To feel her delicate skin, and bombard it with enough energy she’d need for the whole day. I thought she was really happy when she said she was.
But I saw her one night, in the absence of the sun, where butterflies and fireflies couldn’t reach her, away from the oceans, in the dessert without any roses. It was then that I realized that no matter how people smile and spread overflowing delight, you will never know if their happiness is real unless you see their soul. That sometimes their smile is for other people, and never for themselves.
So next time I see her smile, I’ll smile back. If she can’t dedicate that smile for herself, I’ll dedicate mine to her. Because she is you. After you read this I hope you know how much I care.
