what she says: im fine
what she means: in The Martian (2015) dir. Ridley Scott, the characterization of every single person was, from book to screen, almost flawless. there were a few things that i was upset didn't make it from the book, but ive made peace with the fact that they can't squeeze everything into a 2 hour movie. what i can't make peace with is the blatant mischaracterization of Commander Lewis in the climax scene. instead of being the responsible, smart, and capable Commander Lewis from the book, movie Commander Lewis completely betrays all protocols and safety procedures based on her emotional response to accidentally abandoning Mark Watney on Mars. the Commander Lewis i know would never do something like that. this is obviously the completely sexist trope of women being overcome by emotion and doing something irrational, being thinly veiled by the dire circumstances presented in the movie. in my opinion they completely screwed up the most climactic and arguably most important scene in the book by making it about Commander Lewis' need to redeem herself for leaving Mark on Mars in the movie, when the reality of the situation is that she would never do something like that because she is a good Commander who cares about her crew and about doing the right thing even in tough situations. whoever is responsible for this scene completely misjudged her character as a whole and i will never forgive them.
