A little Christmas classic from Fucked Up & friends!
Get to know Toronto's newest stoner metal band...TROG!!
EV REE WUHN
Founded: 2012 (Toronto) Band members: Alex Grant, Adrian Gagnon, Lawson Smith Notable Releases: ev ree wuhn (EP) Purveyors of: Deluxe electronic soundscapes File next to: Flying Lotus, Pantha du Prince, Boards of Canada
The influence of Flying Lotus looms large over ev ree wuhn, a newly minted trio consisting of producers/multi-instrumentalists Alex Grant, Adrian Gagnon and Lawson Smith, and that’s a good thing. You could call them “the FlyLo you can dance to,” with their rhythms less of a jigsaw puzzle and more of a melancholic swaying around on the beach in your anorak. With live jazz-schooled bass melding with live electronics, ev ree wuhn are sure to get heads bobbing and bodies moving, rain or shine. - Jonny Dovercourt

EONS
Founded: 2011 (Toronto) Band members: Bruce Peninsula's Matt Cully, Misha Bower & co. Notable releases: Debut record "Arctic Radio" out now digitally (vinyl coming August via Headless Owl Records) Purveyors of: 21st century folk File next to: Michael Hurley, Ian & Sylvia, Will Oldham
If you take a drive on the Trans-Canada, you'll find yourself face-toface with the impossible distance and magnitude of a geography that is daunting and beautiful, empty and imposing. The jutting blankness of the Canadian Shield; the infinite prairie ocean; the jagged dominance of the Rockies. If you flip on the radio to find solace, all you'll hear sometimes is a distant, keening voice that seems to emerge from the land or from your heart. The landscape is changing; your heart is murmuring – it just takes EONS to see it. - Joe Strutt

PACHAMAMA
Founded: 2012 (Toronto) Band members: Alex MacKenzie, Brandon Valdivia Notable releases: Self-titled cassette EP (Healing Power Records) Purveyors of: Dance Dance Revolution File next to: Emma Goldman, Subcomandante Marcos
Pachamama want you to dance – and their percussion-heavy solidarity jams, matching technology and tradition, have a way of getting crowds moving. But Brandon Valdivia (Mas Aya, Not The Wind Not The Flag, Picastro, etc.) and Alex MacKenzie (Petra Glynt, Wet Nurse) also want to have a conversation about thoughful disobedience and the implications of the choices we make every day. Think global, groove local. – Joe Strutt

MOST PEOPLE
Founded: 2010 (Toronto) Band Members: Brandon Gibson-DeGroote, Paul McEachern Notable Releases: Most People Purveyors of: Nature-walk harmonizing File next to: Fleet Foxes, Explosions in the Sky, Band of Horses
Listening to Most People, one of the first Wavelength Artist Incubator bands, is the mental equivalent of a day spent falling in love on the beach, running recklessly through trees and smiling until it hurts under the hot sun. Duo Brandon Gibson-DeGroote and Paul McEachern bring the magic with playful harmonies, doubled drumming and a toolbox full of atmospheric textures, filling their live show with a positive energy that has people raving to the end of the city and back. Look up to the sky and sway; we’re all young and wild at heart. - Elena Gritzan

WATERSHED HOUR
Founded: 2011 (Whitby, ON) Band Members: Laura Klinduch, Natalie Resimes Notable Releases: Bend Your Knees, Bang to the Van Gogh Purveyors of: ‘90s indie-rock from women born in the ‘90s File next to: Inbreds, Spinanes, every other awesome ‘90s indie-rock duo
Watershed Hour are a relentlessly forward-ploughing, Fugazi-tinged drum/bass guitar duo ignited by two young women from Whitby named Laura and Natalie. Noticeably absent from their brand of suburban alienation punk is the awful cloying faux reggae grungestep that seems to be seeping into young Canadian punk lately. (Turn back, young punk! Faux reggae grungestep is a trap set by the ghosts of 90's ska!) Listen to Watershed Hour to catch a taste of the expansive future of Canadian wide-openness. Their set-up will draw inevitable lazy comparisons to the White Stripes, but I keep thinking of Toronto’s circa-2007 superduo, the Sharp Tongues. – Doc Pickles

UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Founded: 2010 (Toronto) Band members: Sita, Layla, Fiona Notable releases: Debut album coming soon! Purveyors of: Next-gen punk-rock pop File next to: cub, Beat Happening, Ed Sheeran, Negative Approach
With a mission statement "to be the funnest band ever," Unfinished Business play songs about rock stars, BFF's, epic fails and haunted houses. They might be the youngest band playing ALL CAPS!, but these three girls (13 and 14 years old) are already seasoned veterans, sharing stages with the likes of Mac Demarco and playing F'ed Up's Long Winter series. Writing what they know and having fun on stage, Unfinished Business aren't a novelty band – they're role models for the scrappy, DIY spirit of punk. - Joe Strutt
