From the second she stepped inside, Waverly could sense her mouth starting to water. Whatever was going on in the kitchen was something she wanted in her stomach as soon as possible. The blonde knew her way around a sewing machine and a sketch but cooking had always been a foreign concept, something Jasper had handled when he was still alive. If it wasnât for him she wouldâve gone through all of college eating easy mac and ramen only. âThank you for inviting me over, I wish I had brought better wine for whatever smells so good.â The blonde noted apologetically as she followed her sister further inside.

After a night of very vivid dreaming, Waverly was sketching up a storm today. But all that drawing required fuel so the blonde had posted up in a corner at the bakery to ensure she had a supply of coffee and treats available as needed. As she sat the table was slowly becoming an an unorganized mess of sketches and pages, enough so that her shifting in her chair sent a few of them off the table and onto the floor between her and another table. Noticing Chelseaâs shoes when she went to pick the pages up she winced apologetically âSorry, Iâll try to be better about keeping the floor clean... Is that for me?â She asked, noticing a the brunette was holding blueberry muffin

Finn had been working nonstop at the diner, trying to get the furniture and decorations set up before too many people saw them. He wanted everything to be perfect and right where they were supposed to be before the grand opening, a date that he still hadnât picked out. And then there was Ruby. Meeting up with her again found him happier than heâd been in a while and yet, he couldnât get ahead of himself. They had a lot of history that needed to be fixed before he could even entertain the idea of trying to date her again. If she would even want him back. Knowing that she had moved on and married someone else told him that whatever feelings she might have had for him had long since dissapated. Regardless, talking to her again like old times meant that no matter what happened, they were going to be okay. He could be happy for her in whatever relationship she entered into, right?Â
He was kind of surprised when Waverly reached out to him and asked to meet up with him. He was under the impression that Rubyâs entire family blamed him for their relationship failing. Still, Waverly was like the little sister that he never had and theyâd stayed in touch through texts and calls during his time in Europe and her time spent on the road with her boyfriend. Now, they both found themselves back in their hometown and feeling like strangers. Both had issues they needed to work through and what better way to do that than to hang out with someone whose life is equally as messy. He had been at the entrance to the hiking trails for about ten minutes, his dog Rosie eager to get the hike underway. He couldnât help the smile that crossed his lips when he saw the familiar face. âWaverly, you havenât changed a bit. Perhaps a bit taller but still just as beautiful.â He said, walking over to her car once sheâd parked.
The blonde was already feeling a little stressed by the time she pulled into the lot. Sheâd gotten a bit of a late start to the day which meant arriving not on time. Although she knew Fin would probably not be upset, being late and making other people wait was not something Waverly enjoyed doing. Slightly out of breath from the worry, the younger Austin sister hurried over to meet him and Rosie at the entrance. âHey! Sorry!â She apologized quickly, taking a moment to realize heâd said something. Blushing slightly under the compliment and embarrassment of her awkward arrival the blonde dipped her head in recognition. âI donât know about that, but thanks Fin. How are you? Excited to get out? Rosie looks like sheâs raring to get started.â

15. the devil : is your muse addicted to any substances ? is there anything that could possibly make them quit ?
Waverly has been fortunate to generally avoid addiction. There was a period after her husbandâs passing that she used drinking as a crutch to avoid her feelings and pain. Although probably not the most healthy relationship with alcohol, it never evolved into a clear dependence and her relationship with the substance has gotten to a better place.

After returning to town, the boutique had become one of Waverlyâs favorite spots. Not that she was buying up a storm every time she came in, more admiring and getting ideas though she bought enough to ensure she wasnât just being an annoying window shopper. On this particular day the store was fairly busy but the blonde couldnât help but focus in on one dark-haired woman who seemed stuck between two colors of a jumpsuit in the same silhouette. Before she could stop herself Waverly opened her mouth. âIâd go with the green, better contrast with your hair-sorry not that itâs any of my business.â She apologized, blushing slightly with embarrassment. âI just canât help myself when it comes to color and design, but I shouldnât just start rambling to people who didnât ask.â
âIt can be,â he nodded his head. He was sure that he had seen the two of them hanging out when they were younger, but truthfully the man had not been paying that much attention as a teenage boy to his younger sisterâs friends. Mateo watched as Waverly bent down to pet Nala, the goldenâs tail swinging happily side to side as she was pet behind the ears. Nala was quick to follow both the woman and Mateo as he moved through the house toward his kitchen. âYeah?â His parentâs had never been too strict about having people over. Though as a young teen, Mateo had been too caught up in playing baseball to have much of a social life outside the sport. He smiled at Waverly as she spoke of Jasper. It made him feel like she was comfortable enough around him to do so. âA seltzer, got it,â he nodded his head, opening up the fridge and grabbing her one. He didnât drink them but Mateo was foolish not to have at least a small selection of them sitting around as they were more popular than he imagined they would be. Mateo grabbed a beer for himself, handing off the drink to Waverly as he opened up the slider for Nala to make her way in and out of his house. âYou have any dogs growing up?â
Waverly smiled, dipping her head in silent thanks for the drink as she pulled it open and took a sip. The first drink was always just pure carbonated bubbles, her favorite part of seltzer really. But it didnât last. The drink settled and that was fine, just not as exciting or fun to drink. âNo, gosh I wish though. My mom and dad were always so worried about mess and shedding. So no cats either. Only fish. We had a beautiful aquarium. And I loved them, donât get me wrong. But having something more cuddly wouldâve been nice too.â The blonde noted with a shrug. âBut maybe now that Iâm back and getting into the rhythm of things...â She trailed off, voice and eyes conveying a hopefulness as she looked over at him. Afraid of making things awkward, Waverly glanced away clearing her throat. âSo whatâs the story with Nala? Since she canât tell it to me herself, of course.â

âSo, how weird I had no idea you were even friends with my sister.â He chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck as he fended off his Golden Retriever with pets as they walked into his home in Rosewood Hills. âSorry about her, she gets really excited when I have company.â He told her, looking over at his shoulder as he slipped off his shoes a bit further into the walkway, kicking them off to the side. âHonestly, I should have expected you were friends with Teodora, but I guess I only knew you from Boston,â he admitted to her. Waverly was a few years younger than him, but he couldnât recall ever seeing the two of them hang out, but he had probably been two busy with baseball before he left for the big leagues. âCan I get you anything?â
Waverly nodded chuckling in return. âFor as small as Fallbrook technically is, it can be a pretty big place when it comes to who knows who and who knows they know each other.â She noted with a smile, not entirely sure if the phrasing had made sense. But Mateo generally seemed capable of decoding Waverly-speak so hopefully he would understand her latest attempt at using the English language correctly. Waving off his apology about his dog without a word, the blonde crouched down on the ground to embrace her with a scratch behind the ear. There was no way she was meeting a friendly dog and not petting it. A bit sad to stop, but wanting to follow Mateo, Waverly got back up and headed further into the house after him. âYeah, she and I never really hung out much outside of school or extracurriculars, my parents were pretty strict about having people over or me going out a lot. I mean, even having Jasper over for dinner was a stretch-â She broke off, realizing that was the first time sheâd really said his name in a while. And oddly it didnât hurt as much. Not around Mateo. Shaking off the thought the blonde put on a smile again, not wanting to concern her companion. âIâll take seltzer or juice if you have any. But no pressure.â
âSure, I donât mind, itâs the least I can do since youâre sitting here listening to me ramble,â Dani said, handing the bartender her debit card. She needed to get the rant out of her system and was feeling better already. âItâs fine, donât really have much else going on for me besides work which is really unfortunate. I feel like Iâm stuck in a rut, you know?â It was frustrating at times, seeing as Dani was used to not being in one place for too long. She liked having changes in her life. âWhat about you? Anything new and exciting?âÂ
Waverly bit her lip thoughtfully when the question was posed back to her. New and exciting. Not necessarily words she had frequently applied as descriptors of her life at all in recent years, but at the moment they were surprisingly relevant. âWell, Iâm not sure how exciting it is but definitely new that Iâm trying to find a job here. After I came back a few months ago I kept telling myself it was temporary but, surprise, itâs not! And thatâs great, but it does also mean I need to figure out what the heck to do with myself to make money.â The blonde explained.
âYou are welcome,â Mateo was happy to offer his support. Certainly they had been running into each other a lot and he was feeling a bit of a connection with her, though he hadnât been quite ready to admit that to himself yet. âYeah?â He raised a brow, surprised by the compliment. âItâs taken a while to get the hang of it and I really like it,â he told her, shrugging his shoulders, âbut I donât think itâs the end all be all for me.â Mateo admitted to the other woman, âOh, uh,â he reached up to rub the back of his neck, âI was wondering, thereâs another Jurassic Park marathon on Monday,â Valentineâs Day, but he wasnât going to point that out, âat the theater, I was wondering if youâd want to go see that? I know we missed out last time with the complications.â
Waverly nodded, unable to help but just continue smiling in his reaction to the compliment. But where he brought the conversation next caught the blonde slightly off guard. Monday, movie marathon. A date? No no probably not. But wasnât Monday Valentineâs? So maybe? As the train of thought teetered off its tracks she realized she hadnât actually said anything. Swallowing hard Waverly could feel heat start to tingle on her cheeks as she found words. âDinosaurs. Movie snacks. Whatâs not to love, right?â The blonde noted in a slightly stilted manner. âYes, um yeah. Yeah. We should do that.â
-Time skip-
As she walked up to the front doors of the theater, Waverly couldnât help but notice her palms felt a little sweaty against the cold metal of the door handle. But why? There was nothing to be nervous about. it was just seeing a movie. Had she obsessed over outfit options for over an hour? Yes. But that didnât mean anything. When the door opened she practically walked straight into Mateo. Apparently he had been waiting close by. âHi! Sorry for the near collision. You-um-shall we?â
She laughed softly before nodding. âOf course. Just wash your hands.â She winked at her. âWell, thatâs good. Plus, itâs not really hard. I promise. Youâll do great.â Teodora grinned and stirred the sauce once more. âCould you check the chicken in the oven? See if itâs getting golden yet?â She asked and looked over at the oven. There was still a few minutes left and once it was done, she could cut it up and add it to the sauce.
Waverly nodded readily and started to wash up. When finished, the blonde went over to take a look at the chicken, crouching down slightly in front of the oven to get a better view. âYes! Itâs definitely starting to!â The blonde confirmed with a smile, glancing back over to Teo as if slightly proud she had accomplished something cooking related even if it was just observing. Rejoining her friend by the stove the next few minutes passed quickly until the components were ready for combining. Waverly took a step back to allow space for the chef while she looked on. âWow, I know it needs to cool a little but I want to just grab some of that right now.â

âOh my god, youâre totally right. Iâm going to start calling it that now because they are trying to act like a main character most of the time,â Dani said, letting out a loud laugh in response to the comment. âI donât mind making someoneâs day special, but when your request is literally something we canât do then thatâs where I have a problem.â Noticing her drink was empty, Dani waved the bartender over. âDo you want another drink? My treat.âÂ
âYeah, thereâs definitely a need for a reality check every now and then.â Waverly nodded in agreement. A bit caught off guard by the offer it took her a moment to reply. âOh, yeah. I mean if itâs not trouble that would be great. Though Iâll owe you one for sure.â She noted as the bartender came down and took her glass away momentarily to provide said refill. âSo other that clients how is everything for you?â
âIt still looks great,â ready or not, Mateo was impressed, though he always lacked in the artistic department. The man had grown up interested in sports, baseball more than anything. And even before then, he dabbled in other things. Mateo participated in the cookie decorating during the Christmas holiday, but they had turned out worse than some of the childrenâs. âI think itâs very practical, if itâs what you love.â He shrugged his shoulders, âIâm sure some said my professional baseball career wasnât that practical, considering it ended with me being a bartender.â He chuckled, poking fun at himself.Â
It felt good to be encouraged but also odd. Waverly wasnât used to the motivation coming from anyone but herself. And even that confidence waxed and waned more than any moon could. âThank you for that.â The woman murmured, smiling in return. But her face fell a bit when Mateo followed it up by bagging on himself, even if it was in jest. Reaching out she put a hand on his arm for a second and gave a reassuring squeeze. âNothingâs ended, you can still do whatever you want. And thereâs nothing wrong with bar-tending either. My aunt thinks youâre pretty damn good at it.â

The coffee was just as good and the treats my have been a little better than he remembered and since being back, he made a point of stopping in there at least once a day. Today was no different and he may have gotten a little too much as he was preparing to go over some stuff for his classes and was struggling to carry everything as he walked outside and almost ran into someone. âSorry. Arms are full. Can you open the car door for me?â He asked the person.
Waverly had planned to head to the cafe to sketch a little more, she had headphones in as she approached and was a bit lost in the music until she was abruptly distracted by a near traffic jam collision with Oliver Valentine. Quickly pulling her earbuds out, the blonde hurried to grab the car door for him as requested. âDo you need any other help? Iâm not in a rush and you look like you have a lot going on.â She offered with a small smile.Â
