In 2005, Chinese billionaire Alex Hu Guirong began building the worldâs largest shopping mall in Dongguan, China. At seven million square feet, the New South China Mall had room for up to 2,350 shopsânot to mention the full-size indoor roller coaster, the 1.3 mile long canal (complete with gondolas), and the 82 foot replica of the Arc de Triomphe.
There was only one problemânobody wanted to put a store in it. From 2005 until the present, only about one percent of the mall has ever been usedâever. The other 6,930,300 square feet just is gathering dust under cloth covers, and the only people who really work there are the security guards who keep squatters away.
There are a few reasons why the mall flopped so hard, and one of them is the locationâDongguan only has a population of 10 million, most of them poor-ish factory workers, and it can take a few hours to even get there.
HI!
Itâs been a while since Iâve last posted here. Itâs been years I guess. Iâve been very busy with everything thatâs happened to my life. Well, now Iâll try to update this everyday... thatâs what queues are for. Iâm trying to remember that tags that Iâve been using to sort out everything! Phew...Â
But hey... letâs wake this blog again!
KOREAN MODEL INJECTED COOKING OIL INTO HER FACE WHEN DOCTORS DENIED PLASTIC SURGERY!!! A plastic surgery addict injected cooking oil into her face when doctors refused to give her any more silicone. Former model Hang Mioku has been left permanently disfigured following the DIY beauty treatment. After injecting an entire bottle of black market silicone into her face, Hang resorted to using cooking oil that left her face severely swollen and scarred. Her plights was featured on Korean television and viewers donated thousands of won to pay for corrective surgery. During the first of 10 operations, surgeons removed 60g of silicone, oil and other foreign substances from her face and 200g from her neck. However, Hang is still disfigured and she said she wishes she could have her old face back. Hang had her first procedure aged 28 and then moved to Japan where she had repeated treatments. She quickly became obsessed with having smoother and softer skin. Doctors eventually refused to carry out any more work on her after her face became noticeably enlarged. However, she managed to get hold of a bottle of silicone and a syringe to self-inject but when that ran out she resorted to use cooking oil. Her face was so altered that her own parents did not recognize her and local children also used to call her 'standing fan' because her face was so large compared to her small body. Numerous operations paid for by donations have managed to reduce the size of her face and neck but she is still significantly disfigured. Recently the former model was working in a recycled clothes shop, called The Beautiful Shop, and receiving handouts from the state.
HASHIMA ISLAND, Japan (Abandoned Island)
Petroleum replaced coal in Japan during the 1960s and the islandâs output declined. Mitsubish closed the mine in 1974 and the 835 people per hectare population abandoned Hashima Island. Ownership has since been turned over to the city of Nagasaki (15km away) and the island survives as a tourist attraction, although access is limited due to the dangerous condition of the abandoned buildings, some of which have tumbled down.
BEICHUAN, China (Ghost City/Abandoned City)
Ravaged by the Sichuan earthquake of 2008, the tragic city of Beichuan has become one of Asiaâs modern day ghost towns. Like some of the great cities of classical times, much of Beichuan was destroyed when the quake shook this peaceful landscape, its remaining buildings standing â just about â amid a scene of sheer destruction. To put the tragedy into perspective, in a town with a population of 20,000, over 1,000 students lost their lives at Beichuan high school alone when two buildings collapsed on the campus. Survivors were relocated after the town was deemed too vulnerable to rebuild.  It is set to become a memorial park.
This hillside in southwestern Turkey offers an impressive sight, dotted with roughly 500 ruined houses that once made up the 2,000 strong Greek Christian settlement of Kayakoy. Abandoned in 1923, the ghost town is so intact that the houses could be waiting for new owners to fix their roofs, splash some paint around and get on with life as normal. In fact several houses have been reoccupied, and with two surviving Greek Orthodox churches, Kayakoy is a major tourist attraction protected by the Turkish government, although roadside vendors have a habit of scavenging objects from the town to sell as souvenirs.
Gulliverâs Kingdom
Location:Â Kamikuishiki, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan
Years in operation:Â 1997-2001
Creepy factor:Â 8
Although Japan has its fair share of uncanny abandoned amusement parks, we think that Gulliverâs Kingdom, a failed theme park based on Jonathan Swiftâs classic tale, takes the proverbial cake. Although demolished in 2007, the several-year span when the Lilliputian theme park sat disused and neglected was a high point for the many intrepid urban explorers looking to crawl all over Lemuel Gulliverâs lanky, 147.5-foot-long concrete frame. The parkâs closing, the result of poor ticket sales, probably had something to do with its rather unfortunate locale: although located at the foot of Mount Fuji, the park was adjacent to Aokigarah, Japanâs infamous âSuicide Forest,â and in the same village where the Aum Shinriyko doomsday cult, the group behind 1995âs Sarin gas attacks in Tokyo, was headquartered.Â

Apadana Palace (Persepolis, Iran)
Built by Darius the Great around 515 B.C., the palace must have been a wonder to behold. Massive columnsâof which thirteen remained standing by the twentieth centuryâsupported the roof. The staircases were embellished with rows of reliefs that displayed successions of delegates, soldiers, guards, and chariots carrying presents and offerings to honor the king. The front walls of the palace were carved with images of the Immortals of 300 fameâthe Persian Kingsâ noble guard.
OKPO LAND, South Korea
Location:Â Okpo City, Geoje Island, South Korea
Years in operation:Â ?-1999
Creepy factor:Â 9Â
While we donât know much about the history of Okpo Land, a seriously foreboding abandoned fun park perched atop a hill on South Koreaâs tiny Geoje Island, we do know this: The park was shut down in 1999 after a number of fatal accidents, the last when a young girl tragically fell to her death from a ride. Immediately after that incident, the owner of the park disappeared and was never heard from again. Although Okpo Land has the dread-inducing looks and disturbing back-story seemingly plucked from a K-Horror film, that hasnât stopped hordes of fearless urban explorers from making a pilgrimage (this guy even spent the night).Â

Elephanta Caves (Gharapuri Island, India)
The cave temple on Gharapuri Island has been called one of the seven wonders of India. It was carved from the natural landscape in the fifth century, and hosts the embodiment of Indian art in the form of staggeringly beautiful carvings and statues. The carvings on the panels portray various Hindu deities, along with their attendants.
The most important and brilliant sculpture depicts the Trimurti. This twenty foot image was carved in relief at the back of the cave, and it presents the three-headed Shiva. To reach the temple, you have to travel from the Indian mainland to the island, traverse the mountain, and find your way through the caves.
Remember that abandoned island in Skyfall? The one where James Bond was taken? It was actually at Japan and the island is called Hashima and was abandoned in 1974.Â
Dazu Rock Carvings (China)
The intricate carvings on the stone cliffs of Dazu are revered as the most sophisticated and exquisite of their time. Created between the ninth and thirteenth centuries AD, they are a clear testimony to the congenial and harmonious integration of religion, philosophy, and culture that China experienced during this epoch.
Their well-preserved condition make them stand out from the larger carvings found at many other national sites. Varying in size from very small to grandiose, over fifty thousand sculptures and one hundred thousand engravings and etchings can be seen in the sunlightâall of them connected via well-maintained passages and trails.
