Williamsburg Galleries Association (WGA) is an organization founded to coordinate the partnership between all galleries in and around Williamsburg, Brooklyn (NYC). Our mission is to make Williamsburg, Brooklyn’s exhibitions, events, and happenings easily accessible to the general public as well as to art goers and press organizations. Every 2:nd Friday Every 2nd Friday of every month, WGA galleries stay open later than usual, generally until 9pm or 10pm, to allow audiences a better chance to see their exhibitions, as well as to host special events, gallery parties, and performances. Williamsburg Armory Weekend

ART 101

ART 101 opens the 11th season with DUET, featuring works by Theresa Ellerbrock and Susan Mayr.  The opening reception is Friday, September 12, from 6 to 9.  The exhibition runs through October 12.

  Light, layers, and transparency --  the handling of these is what unites the artists.

  Using the techniques of Joomchi – the traditional Korean process  involving hanji, Korean mulberry paper –  Theresa Ellerbrock creates the balanced structure  that draws in the viewer.  “It is through intuitive exploration and discovery of the material’s properties and their limits that the work is created. I use line, layering, transparency and opacity to bring structure, light and depth to the work”

  Susan Mayr’s richly layered canvases bespeak her own sense of peace, benevolence and beauty  -- the memories of special places.   “Oil paint…and the possibility of applying layer after layer, is my medium.  Each layer, even if it is scraped away or covered, retains its own memory.  Those memories are bent in form and color until the paint speaks its language and I can listen.”

2nd Friday, September edition

Williamsburg galleries are kicking off the fall season with a range of diverse and exciting exhibitions and events. 2014 is a particularly significant year as several galleries are celebrating anniversaries; despite the constant flux of the neighborhood and recent developments that have widely altered the landscape, the integrity of the gallery scene stands strong. Pierogi and Sideshow are celebrating 20 years in operation, Front Room 15, Figureworks 14, and Art101 11. We've also seen two new galleries open this year, Simon/Neuman² and Firework Gallery. 

This September features a solo exhibition of genre paintings by Jeff Zilm at The Journal Gallery; a group exhibition of works selected from the MICA MFA '14 class at Sideshow; a monumental 205-artist exhibition at Pierogi along with the legendarily fun Gravity Racers event at The Boiler; a solo show by Jerome Johnson at Firework Gallery; a photographic exploration of Brutalist architecture by Sean Hemmerle at Front Room; a highly considered pairing of the delicate works by Theresa Ellerbrock and Susan Mayr at Art101; paintings by George Hofmann and Ben Dowell at Ventana244; Prove it to me, a mixed-media and project-based group show, which will include psychometric readings by Stephanie Diamond on opening night, will be on view at ReverseSpace; "And the winner is..."  an exhibition of paintings by George Spencer with select 20th century works by notable artists who have explored various forms of competition will be on view at Figureworks; experior: try, test, experience, curated by Lauren Wolchik, will open at Gitana Rosa; Belief System, a solo exhibition by Munro Galloway at Soloway; and MEMORIAL, an exhibition honoring two artists who have passed away recently, Estelle Levy and Fernand Barbot, at the Williamsburg Art and Historical Center, which will include Dinner with the Devil on September 19 including music by the Julianne Kloptic Duet.
