Captains + unnecessary twirling
earth’s a mess. it’s her first time back - really back - in over twenty years and the place is a shambles. sure, it had been bad when she had come down and met coulson so she could go into the stone but sheesh it’s so much worse now that she’s actually stopping to take a good hard look at it. carol knows she should head back up to space, go back to fighting skrulls and continuing on her path pre-snappening but how can she do that when she’s almost grown close to the team on earth?
the majority of the last hour or so was spent up in the air, flying above the city and really taking in all of the destruction and chaos that had ensued since the snap. earth needed her. there were plenty of other star force members doing their bit in the kree-skrull war so it wouldn’t do any harm for carol to at least try to help restore things on her home planet.
when she finally lands on the ground back at s.h.i.e.l.d’s current headquarters, her helmet dematerialises away and blonde locks fall back into place as she walks inside to try and find one of the others. once she spots a person up ahead, carol stops and calls out. “hey!” she steps forward to get a good look at who it is. “you alright?”

Steve cracked a smile at how easygoing Carol was about her rank. To him, she seemed like one of the good guys in the military, she cared more about her duties and saving good people than she did about whatever status she could achieve. He knew he liked and admired her for a reason. “God,”He let out a breath and squinted up towards the sky before looking back to her. “Who knew that this day would come, huh? It’s crazy, it’s all so crazy.” He muttered, shaking his head in disbelief.
He continued to smile down at the cat, completely baffled that she so willingly followed her owner into this place. Still, he hoped that nothing bad would come to the creature, or anyone for that matter. He’d seen war, he knew what it meant — he wasn’t kidding himself about it, it meant sacrifice and pain — but the ultimate end, not the victory (though it was nice) but the saving of the innocents was what mattered to him the most. “Chewie?” He asked, raising a brow and nodding. “Yeah, I’ve actually seen that one, it’s a good show.”
Of course he’d get the wordage wrong for the films, but he wasn’t picky and he’d only seen one of them anyway — and boy was he confused about the plot. He’d never tell anyone about that though — still, he liked that Luke guy. “Well don’t worry because we’re not going to allow that to happen, Thanos isn’t getting anymore stones. Not on my watch.”He confirmed, putting on a brave face even though he felt the pang of doubt creeping up his spine. But he had to admit, Carol was strong and if she could take Thanos on, then Steve was going to clear the path for her to do so.
“Buck’s with Nat? Huh, never thought they’d get along,”he shrugged it off, smiling a bit to himself that his two closest friends had found each other in this place. He nodded along to the rest of her words, frowning only slightly when she mentioned having not seen Sam or T’Challa. “I’ll keep searching for them then, thanks for your help.” He glanced away, only to turn back when she mentioned Tony’s best friend and some other guy.“Yeah, I know Rhodey, he’s a great guy, but sorry I don’t know the other.”He paused for a moment before meeting her eye, “and Tony? Tony Stark?”
a slight laugh passed her lips and she nodded along. she had been involved in many fights, seen things that would've shocked most people... and yet, half of the universe vanishing had taken even her by surprise. "just another day at the office, right?" she joked, "for what it's worth, i know things seem pretty bleak lately but i think we'll come out on top. we'll get him."
her eyes flickered down to the flerken cat weaving between her legs and her smile grew at steve's choice of words. "a good show," carol echoed with a nod. though she didn't judge. she couldn't, really. she was still stuck in the nineties and could relate to coming back to a completely different time. granted, the jump from the forties was a hell of a lot more life-altering her own experience but... "i love it. first thing i'm gonna do when we get out of here is watch the new ones that i haven't seen yet." she reached down to scratch between chewie's ears and glanced up at steve, listening as he talked about thanos. "well, i'm glad we're on the same page there. i can't wait to get that ugly gauntlet off of him." her mouth twisted into a slight grimace.
carol hummed quietly, nodding to confirm she had seen the two of the together. "yup, looks like they're pretty close." her expression turned apologetic. "i'll keep an eye out for them and if i see them, i'll send them your way." she wasn't overly surprised to hear that he didn't know who peter was. as far as she was aware, most people on earth were unaware of who or what was out there in space. however, her attenion piqued at the mention of tony stark. she knew about the feud there having read up on the avengers and quizzing coulson on everything she had missed. "yeah, i've seen tony," carol confirmed. "he's okay. think he's just as hellbent as the rest of us on stopping thanos."

“Carol,” Tony said, his smile growing as she took his hand. This was already going about a million times better than his first meeting with Cap. “Believe me - the pleasure’s entirely mine. So you did get the call,” he said. “I thought the old bastard might have done something, and I guess he came through.”
He couldn’t resist asking, “So– what’s your story? Where did you vanish off to, and how did Fury manage to reach you?”
His smile turned a bit rueful. “Sorry, I know we have a lot of work to do, but … indulge my curiosity, will you? But also - how much do you know? About Thanos, the Snap…” he paused, awkward. “The … Avengers?”
For his own selfish sake, he really hoped that she hadn’t read SHIELD’s files on him. Because he was really done with trying to salvage his reputation.
reaching for the pager she always kept on her, carol held it between her fingers and raised it for tony to see. probably not the most impressive piece of technology to show to someone like him but it was the most advanced thing she had. and not to mention, one of her most prize possessions. it wasn’t much and it was outdated as hell but it was the only thing she had that kept her in connection with her own planet. “he reached me on this. obviously it wasn’t the most elaborate message but...it got me here.” she had nick’s pager with her too, her hopes high that she would find him here and could return it to him.
“as for my story...” carol began, “let’s just say i’ve spent a lot of time in space the last twenty years. you ever heard of skrulls? or kree?”
she lifted her hand to wave off his words, showing that she didn’t mind sharing her story with him. hell, she expected to be asked such questions. the reception she had gotten from the team was already a hell of a lot better than she imagined it would be and she would take genuine curiosity about her absence over the angry ‘where the hell have you been this whole time?’ she had initially been expecting.
“i know enough,” she told him. however, the smile that was still on her face showed that she didn’t care about the avengers’ recent squabbles, or the accords, or the negative air that had been surrounding them the last few years. they were a team of good people who wanted to do right in the world, restore peace and order and help the little guys. they seemed like her kind of people. “phil gave me intel on everything before i came in here. i’ve done my research. on thanos and the stones...” she paused. “...the avengers.” she let the words hang in the air, making it known that she about all the bad press. but when she continued, carol’s tone was still light. friendly. showing no sign of resentment or dislike towards tony or the avengers.
“happy to be on the same team if you’ll have me.”
@wcmanofwar
“Oh wow.”
It was a statement of genuine awe. Tony Stark, genius, billionaire, retired playboy and philanthropist, wasn’t often star struck, but he was right now.
Carol Danvers. Captain Marvel. A legend in her own right. He’d been up to his eyeballs in military contracts at the time she’d been with the airforce, and although he’d never actually had a chance to meet her in person, the stories he’d heard had blown him away.
Move over Captain America. Make way for the real first Avenger.
“Captain,” he said, scrambling over the ruins and waving. “I didn’t think we’d see you here, but you’ve definitely arrived at a good time. Or a bad time, depending on how you slice it, considering that Thanos just showed up in style.” He smiled, holding out a hand. “Tony Stark. I can only say I wish we were meeting under better circumstances.”
thanks to intel from phil coulson, carol had gone into the stone with a fairly good idea of who was who. at least, on the avengers side of things. tony stark, however, didn’t need any research whatsoever. even back before carol had been in the blast that gave her her powers, back when she had been climbing up through the ranks in the air force, she knew who tony stark was. who didn’t?
she almost wanted to laugh. back in the air force, not once did she ever think she would be here, a legitimate superhero fighting on the same side as the tony stark.
“please, call me carol,” the blonde insisted. “i’d say i turned up at the perfect time. i’ve been dying to kick some titan ass since i got the call from fury,” carol said as she reached out to take tony’s hand, offering him a smile and a nod of greeting. “it’s good to finally meet you, tony. even under these circumstances.”
who were they kidding? if anything was going to bring she and tony stark together ( or any of the avengers, really), it was going to be an end-of-the-world catastrophe such as this. still, it was a shame that had to be the case. “i’m just sorry i wasn’t around to lend a hand sooner.” of all the things thanos had thrown at her, that was the one to stick most. “but trust me, i fully intend to make up for it.”

Peter was only enraged even more by Thanos’ words. How dare he assume that he wanted to actually die? He didn’t, though a part of him longed to be with Gamora, to be with his mom, to be with Yondu – still he knew in his heart of hearts that he still had plenty of years to go, and they weren’t going to be spent here in the Soul Stone.
“How about you restore things back to the way they were before you decided to play God, you big asshole!?“ He yelled, firing relentlessly with both guns now. But before Peter could do much more, he was thrown back by the shock wave that the Space Stone had surged towards him and Carol. In an instant, the Guardian shot his head up and looked over to see Carol getting up and….
Okay so she was really and completely badass.
Peter gave her a thumbs up to show he was okay when she looked over and watched in amazement as she seemed to rubber band the Mad Titan’s powers back at him tenfold. Scrambling to his feet, Peter moved over towards her and aimed his guns and began to shoot to kill. “You came to the wrong stone, mother fucker.” Peter yelled, smirking behind his mask and hoping Carol would add on to his words, or by the very least he hoped that he’d enhance her powers.
@villainsofsoi
Thanos was somewhat surprised when Danvers took the blast from the space stone and still came up swinging. Somewhat - but not entirely. The other so-called Avengers had been able to resist for a while, and he would have been disappointed if she had fallen quite so easily.
The other - well, he crumpled, and that was hardly surprising. He was more of a trickster, relying on sneak attacks and traps, but this time, there was no time for that.
“Playing God?” he said, glancing over at the mortal. “You would know about that. Your father played at God. Me, I simply strive to restore the balance–”
He didn’t have time to finish his sentence, before Danvers was back on her feet and reflecting the stones’ power back at him. That was a surprise, and it nearly caught him by surprise. He threw up a shield, deflecting most of the blast, but felt the burn of the backlash anyway.
“Impressive,” he said, turning towards Danvers. “Perhaps your reputation isn’t exaggerated after all. Unfortunately, this ends here.”
He’d been weakened by using the stones - and again in splitting reality in here. He would have to end this, and quickly. Raising the gauntlet, he reached for the power of the reality stone, seeking to undo both of them.
@wcmanofwar
relief flooded her when she got confirmation from peter that he was okay after the blast from the stone. she continued to throw a blast of her own back at thanos even despite the shield the titan threw up to protect himself from her attack. in fact, the shield only made her grit her teeth and try to project the energy harder to try and break it down. but, soon enough, her attack had to come to an end and she stopped, dragging in a heavy breath and glaring at the mad titan. “you planning to talk us to death here or what?” while her taunts weren’t exactly as rage-fuelled and colorful as peter’s, she still wanted to throw her two cents in.
as he lifted his gauntlet-clad hand again and the reality stone began to glow red, carol’s eyes widened and she braced herself for whatever thanos was about to throw at them. fear was still yet to reach her but the reality stone unnerved her and it was the thought of what thanos could do with it that made carol shoot up from the ground and into the air. “oh, no, i don’t think so,” she said through her teeth, staying in the air as she projected another blast of energy at thanos, aiming this time for the gauntlet, hoping her attack with serve as a distraction to stop him from harnessing the stone’s power.
“enough, thanos,” she yelled. after a moment, she cut off the blast coming from her hands and landed down on ground in front of the titan, glowing hands raised in front of her as if to warn him that she was all too happy to show him just how far she could go if it came to it. “you’ve done enough.”

Steve felt quite embarrassed that he’d gotten her rank wrong and instinctively reached up to rub the back of his neck as his cheeks turned a familiar shade of pink. “My apologies, Colonel.” He stated, clearing his throat, glancing down at his boots, and then lifting his gaze back up to smile softly at her. She probably already knew that he only knew enough about her to at least know her by her moniker. “They should, ah, really change your name to Colonel Marvel,” he joked lightly, giving a one-shouldered shrug. “Carol it is, and please, call me Steve.” His smile turned more at ease as her’s did.
“She’s brave,“ he commented, smiling at the cat before bringing his eyes back to landing on Carol’s face. “I gotta find me a pet like that,“ he half laughed, temporarily kneeling down and outstretching his hand towards the feline, allowing her to sniff his fingers before he attempted to scratch the top of her head. “What’s her name?“
It was always easier for Steve to talk about animals, hobbies, or the weather than it was about anything really personal. Still, he was willing to push the awkwardness of social interactions aside in favor of hearing her report of the current situation.
“Huh,“ he noted, giving a small grunt before standing back to his full height and meeting her eye. “Well, I guess we can count that to our lucky stars for now.“ He affirmed, grimacing at the thought of Thanos getting all the stones again. He glanced off to the side, staring out at the nearest building that protruded from the mirror-like water before turning back to face Carol. “Sounds like a plan, one I can get behind.“ He smirked, raising a brow and nodding to his vibranium shields that covered his arms. “Have you seen anyone? Like T’Challa, Bucky? Nat and Sam?“ Have you seen Tony? The question was there, but he didn’t dare ask it aloud, instead he relied on the other four – waiting to hear what she had to say.
the second she noticed how awkwardly he reacted, she felt bad and waved off his apology, shaking her head to dismiss it. “and come across even more conceited about it than i already am? i wouldn’t dream of it,” carol joked back. she had considered changing the name once or twice but ultimately, she never could. it wasn’t her name to change and it was one of the few things keeping mar-vell’s memory around. she couldn’t bring herself to alter it in any way. when he told her to call him by his first name too, carol smiled back and nodded. “steve it is.”
“yeah, she’s really one of a kind.” watching with a smile on her face as steve interacted with chewie, carol observed the two of them carefully, waiting to see how the cat reacted to him. generally, if chewie trusted someone so did carol and, when her pet let steve scratch between her ears and began to purr, carol was glad she and chewie were on the same page about captain america. “chewie,” she told him, quickly realising that, given his history, the reference could very well be lost on him. “after a character from star wars that she reminds me of.”
“as long as he doesn’t get all of the stones again, i’m not worried. the more he throws at me, the stronger i get.” thanos was actually, dare she say, a fun one to fight. and that wasn’t something she had ever thought before. “besides, i think the majority of people in here are pissed. anger is sometimes the best fuel in a fight.” she mirrored his smirk and glanced down at the shields, mouth opening to ask where the trademark red, white and blue shield was but closing again seconds later as she thought better of it. “bucky’s the one with the metal arm, right? i’ve seen him around. he’s usually with nat.” she had to think for a moment to remember who the other two were. she hadn’t seen them around but she had gotten the lowdown on all of the avengers and their friends from phil before she came into the stone so she knew of them. “i haven’t seen t’challa and sam, though. sorry. i haven’t seen many people, to be honest. i haven’t been here long myself.” mostly she had just been keeping herself occupied with fighting. if it wasn’t monsters, it was thanos. “i’ve seen rhodey. and peter quill, if you know him.”

My name is Carol Danvers. Ever since I was a little kid, I didn’t fit in. See, I always wanted to fly, and not just in the sky. Nobody believed in me, so I took matters into my own hands. I joined the Air Force, and after years of working and training I finally touched the sky. But I wanted to go higher, farther, faster, and finally… Beyond.

“ bozhe moi… “ natasha curses to herself. how did all this happen? when thanos showed up all hell broke loose. and ‘ all hell ‘ is the understatement of the century. she already knows she’s lost both of the kids she’s felt so close to in the stone to him. and frankly, she has no idea how to get them back right now. it terrifies her.
but, she has to figure out a way to solve this—-for their sakes. she knows that she can’t do it alone. she knows how taking on powerful beings alone works out. the russian has her gun out at the ready, she’s not sure who she is going to encounter right now.
however, she keeps walking around. for certain she’s going to run into someone. her trained skills kick in as she hears something in the distance. it was time to turn into the BLACK WIDOW. “ what the hell do you want—-do i dare ask who’s side you’re on? “ it’s not like she can guess anymore. considering as of right now she knows of two that are down for the count.
while thanos making an appearance had shaken up the stone and taken them all by surprise, carol was thriving. this was her chance to prove herself. to show everyone that nick had called her for a reason and that she really could help with their titan problem.
she was in the air again after cooling off from her fight with thanos, deciding to use her flight to her advantage to keep watch from up high to try and find thanos or any of his minions that also seemed to be lurking around. or really just anybody she could fight. as soon as she caught a glimpse of movement below, carol flew down to land on the ground to be met with natasha.
of course she knew who natasha romanoff was. carol may have been out in space for the last two decades but she still kept tabs on s.h.i.e.l.d. and she had heard all about agent romanoff from nick fury who, undeniably, made it known that natasha was up there in his favorites. good.
“i’m very anti-thanos, if that’s what you mean,” carol answered with a small smile on her face. “just got back from a smackdown with grapeface. ready to go for round two if you’re up for it?”
@wcmanofwar
He’d only heard about her through his readings and had always wanted to meet her. She was a hero in her own right and a damn fine soldier. Steve couldn’t help but to smile in relief knowing that she was here and ready to join in on the fight against Thanos and his Black Order.
Approaching her, he held up a hand in greeting and offered her a pleasant smile, “Captain Danvers,” he greeted, giving her a nod in respect. “It sure is good to finally meet you, and to know you’re here to help.” He glanced down at the cat that weaved itself between her legs and smiled more to himself than anything.
Steve was more of a dog person, but it was sweet to see such a dedicated pet follow its owner into danger. Sweet and vaguely terrifying for the pet. “Nice cat,” he commented, raising his brows before lifting his gaze back up to her. He didn’t want to talk shop right away, wanted to have some semblance of normality, but knew that it was inevitable and was better to not avoid.
“I heard rumors that Thanos had found the Soul Stone, I haven’t seen Tony yet or I’d ask him, assuming you know who he is. but–“ Steve shook his head and sighed, “how bad is it? Do we have a chance?“ He assumed she’d give him a straight reply rather than a hopeful one.
though this was her first time meeting steve rogers, there really was no need for introductions. she recognised him instantly. who wouldn’t recognise captain america these days? her mouth curved into a smile when he greeted her. “colonel,” she corrected, habit taking over even if it made her sound like an ass. “colonel danvers. captain is just part of the mantel.” still, she nodded back to him, giving him the respect he was due too. “but please, call me carol. i’d imagine we’ll all be getting to know each other pretty well while we’re in here so we might as well be on first name terms, right?” her smile turned more friendly and a lot less formal. “it’s good to finally meet you too, captain rogers.”
glancing down at chewie, who had only left carol’s side when she had been fighting monsters or mad titans, the pilot grinned. “thanks,” she answered, crouching down to scratch the cat affectionately between the ears before she stood again. “she kinda comes everywhere with me. like my own little sidekick.”
“last i saw him, he only had two of the stones. space and reality,” carol explained, her voice hopeful. confident, even. it wasn’t often she got disheartened about a fight. mostly because of her own overconfidence but also because she really didn’t like to get knocked down. she always got back up and she never walked away from a fight. “if he hasn’t found any more since then and we can stop him from getting his hand on any more, i think we’ve got a chance. and if he does get any more, then...well, we’ll throw everything we have at him and kick his big purple ass.”
Captain Marvel (2019) insp.
she hadn’t reacted much to thanos’ taunts during their fight about her absence on earth because she hadn’t wanted to give him the satisfaction of knowing he had bothered her. she was too damn proud for that. but now that she was alone, it was playing on her mind and she was angry. angry at herself for not being here to help sooner. angry at nick for not sending a distress signal years ago when thanos first began causing problems.
she should have been there. she should have been helping and maybe none of this would have happened.
her skin was burning hot to the touch, still buzzing with the energy she had absorbed from her fight with thanos. she needed to let it out somehow, manipulate it into something else and hopefully her anger would dissipate with it. and the only way she could think of doing so without destroying everything around her, was through heat. rather than flying above the water like she often opted to do, carol dropped to her feet and landed in the shallow pools of water, unintentionally heating it up. hearing telltale sploshes of footsteps wading through the water close by, carol glanced up and offered a half-smile, greeting the other with a courteous nod. “colonel rhodes.”
usually carol wasn’t the type to show when she was down. especially not around someone else from the u.s. air force when she had done so well to build up her reputation. she was a full bird colonel. she needed to act like one. and yet...
“i just met thanos,” she told him, lifting her foot and kicking gently at the water around her that was starting to bubble as it grew closer to the point of boiling. her anger was still evident in her tone. clearing her throat, carol shook her head and took flight, hovering a foot or so above the water so it would start to cool down and she wouldn’t end up scolding anybody. “lovely guy. wish i’d met him sooner.”
