Photography without Adobe software
Beyond the mud walls Digital photography without Adobe software
I used to write articles for the mac Valley Voice newsletter and I thought I would write about digital photography using software made by companies other than Adobe. While I own and use Adobe software I have not bought “into” the Creative Cloud.
Since adobe is a mix of straw and mud I hope you will understand the title of this series. Like, comment and share is you wish. And these articles will also be posted to my Tumbr account and my own website someday.
Overview of Affinity Photo
Affinity photo is made by Affinity Serif It is a Mac only program that costs $ 50 USA There is a 10 day trial version and online videos.
I will point out the differences between Affinity and other programs.
It has a changeable tool bar at the top and tools running down the left side of the program. Right side is a Histogram with Adjustments, layer effects, styles and stock photos below that.
Bottom Right is the Navigator, transform, history and channels. Channels has composite Alpha, Background Alpha. As well as the normal RGB channels.
On the left side under the paint brush is a color replacement brush. Under the erase tool is a background erase tool. With the band aid tool you have healing brush, patch, in painting and red eye removal. Also a blemish tool.
Exporting The normal export functions are under the file menu and also the export persona. There is a setting for final cut pro under the PSD tab. For SVG and EPS you have print and web settings. Share has settings for e mail, Twitter and Facebook.
Personas These are on the upper left of the program and are modes. Photo, Liquify,Develop and Export. The only big change is that white balance in the develop persona there is a eyedropper. But it is a cross on the screen. The Crop tool has a rule of thirds grid.
Filters You have Frequency Separation for skin retouching built in. For Photoshop there are actions you can use for this. There is a online video for portrait retouching that is useful to watch. And under colour there is erase paper white filter. I am thinking that this is intended for scanned artwork but I will try it with people and products shot on a white background. Haze Removal is also a filter.

Overall it is faster than PS CS 5 on my macs.
Frequency Separation Video https://vimeo.com/130965888 Liquify for Beauty retouching https://vimeo.com/130965048 #macaffinity

thoughts about film
Blog notes
To make for an interesting blog I thought I would write about being an assistant in Los Angeles, and about photography in general. I wrote newsletter articles for the Mac Valley Voice. And these text blog posts may at times be updated articles that I have written before.
Random thoughts on digital photography # 1
Remember film ? I do I even have a roll or two in the cooler next to the food. Long before I even owned a digital camera I had a film scanner. A Minolta 35 plus I bought it for $ 100 at Samy,s during one of their moving sales. it was new old stock but I used for about 5 years. I might still be using it if I could ever get the SCSI to FireWire converter to work. To the photographers who have only shot digital you folks have it easy. No testing batches of film or even different labs. Gone are the days when an assistant would be sent to the lab have have a snip test rush processed. Sometimes I could have something to eat while the test film was being processed. You do not have to call a camera store to have them move film from the freezer to the fridge, if you are shooting digital. In the film days changing color balance was using a filter on the lens or paying the lab to add a dye to the processed film. Now changing color balance is a setting on the camera or an adjustment in post. In college at LACC I took a dye transfer class. Pulled a scene apart with filters over the lens or in the darkroom when makings color separation or prints. Put the image back together with dyes on paper. Today just click on the RGB channels in photoshop. Knowing the old way does help in understanding how photoshop works its magic today. In the days before digital you placed a grey card on the edge of the photo not for the photographer to use. That was a favor to the person at the pre press house. Today the photographer is the pre press house. Are you or me being paid extra for post processing skills?
