          TIRED BUT ANTSY ARMS remained wrapped around naomi even after they pulled away from the hug. simply because charlotte missed her person. and she wasn’t letting her go anytime soon. “ it was boring seeing my mom anyway, and i didn’t go to see my dad. i came back before new years, anyway. felt slightly ignored, so why not just feel ignored in my own home instead ? “ eyes widening, she had been waiting for this for so long. the best part of the holidays after all was the gift exchange. “ firstly, naoms, you didn’t have to get me something for all three. i don’t even need one thing ! and secondly, “ she listed, pulling away finally and heading towards the teapot that began boiling in the kitchen. “ my life is boring, baby. i don’t have much of anything to tell you. i’ve been prepping for classes and working at the shelter. i’m not much. “ shrugging her shoulders, she lifted the pot from the stove and set it on a cooled burner, digging through the cupboard for her favorite yellow mug. “ do you want some ? “ 

she couldn’t help the frown that was now visible on her lips while listening at lottie’s words, completely radiating the disappointment at her friend’s own supposedly memorable holiday. she knew her best friend so well and knew well enough that she deserved so much more. this had her sighing and had her following her friend towards the kitchen, quickly nodding her head. “yes, i do. pour me some too.” setting herself; elbow propped on the counter and chin resting on the palm of her hand, naomi stared at lottie. “and no matter it is that you say, i will always and always give you a present because you deserve it and how can i not? you’re literally my best friend. i can’t bear the thought of not giving you one especially when you mean so much to me. next time, you come with me. if not, i’m staying here with you then, can’t leave you alone anymore.” she nodded. “classes and work? didn’t you rest at all? or at least go to a party for a bit? because if not, would you like to go out and eat something? like literally anything? we could go for some cake and talk more? because, it can’t be just work and class, right? that’d be so... as you said, boring.”

         THE FEW REMAINING CHRISTMAS PRESENTS sat stable in the corner of jax’s bedroom, collecting dust until they finally met their owner. he felt quite proud of his wrapping; the bows on top were a sign of effort, rather than the easy gift bag. but he’d lost track of the time until suddenly, his phone screen lit up on his desk. a message from his sister about a girl at the door. throwing off his headphones and tucking in his chair, he pulled on a hoodie and peeked through an open slit in the door. there naomi was, and he never thought he would’ve actually missed her. he used the opportune moment to sneak behind her quickly, hands gently finding her shoulders as he yelped a grand, “ hey ! “ a few steps later, he stood in front of her, lips curled into a tight-lipped, slanted smile. “ sorry, i lost track of time or else i would’ve been waiting for you. oh — shoes off by the door, please. house rules. “ open palms gestured to the shoe mat by the front door, a familiar place for jax and his strict, orderly ways of keeping the apartment clean. “ but i’m glad you made it home safe. i’m sure you were missed. “ 

naomi, being too indulged on her own thoughts on whether she embarrassed herself or not, jumped in surprise when she felt his hand on her shoulders, quickly looking around and successfully fought the scream that dared to leave her mouth, heaving out a sigh instead. “i’ll make sure to remember to get you next time. this means war, jax.” she pinned playfully before nodding her head. “oh, right! i’m sorry.” within seconds, naomi was able to do what she was told; her shoes off and placed where it should’ve been the moment she entered. “sorry about that...” the faintest hint of pink tinted her cheekbones, feeling a little embarrassed. would you look at that? either way whether she got the apartment wrong or not, she still ended up feeling that way. “but...” she said before turning around to take the gift she prepared for him, smiling widely at him. “i hope this would make it up to my mistake? and i missed you—everyone. so, are you ready to get our own mini celebration? also, i really do hope your girlfriend is okay with all this? she could’ve joined us! were she going somewhere? i saw her leave before you came to see me and she opened the door for me too. i think she’s really pretty.” she nodded.

more often than not, when it’s echo’s turn to pick the movie they’re watching, echo ends up picking one animal oriented. he can’t recall how many times he’s forced iris to watch marley and me but it’s way more than an acceptable amount. sue him for hoping the ending will somewhat turn into a happy one. he’s an optimist. when the doorbell rings he mouthed a be right back and goes to the door to get their pizza. he settles back down next to her, smiling when he sees lucky with his head on her lap and nose against her stomach, handing her a plate then scrolls through nextflix to find their first movie but doesn’t press play right away. instead, he sends her a text inquiring about her day.

never would she ever act the way she did with other people, maybe sure with a few like taeho, but that was it and somehow, it felt comforting. she enjoyed every bit of the comfort but still a part of her would always feel fear of being abandoned and left behind. good thing lucky came to distract her thoughts while echo went for the door real quick, and she made sure to return the favor by patting his head a few times. “you’re honestly the cutest dog i’ve ever seen... and the sweetest too.” she never really noticed echo until she was given a plate with her slice of pizza. not wanting to make it difficult for him and wait for her reply through text, iris decided to talk to him—again, something she didn’t do very often. “it was good, i mean i only get to stay at home for work, which is something i like, and there wasn’t so much of it today.  have a few deadlines but that’s it. what about yours? has everything been going on okay for you? i’m sorry i have to be hear very often, it’s just—it’s just nice to have someone who shares the same mindset as you. it’s nice.” and it was the truth, that was what she truly felt. she smiled.

      “i don’t know, mi.” he told her, leaning forward to rest his elbows over his knees as he sat towards the edge of his seat. “depends. on quite a few things. my work schedule. if things happen to be different next year.” which they wouldn’t be, but she knew that jae liked to dream. “i don’t know, maybe this ear will be the year i can beg my mom to stay here with me and she actually will. or maybe the girls. maybe they’ll give in finally.” his head hug low and although jae’s seemingly held on to high hopes, part of him was already starting to beat himself up for the pain he was just setting himself up for. “but if there’s no sign by then and if work is clear for the end of the year, yeah. i’ll go with you, but…” his eyes pulled up from the floor to land on the small girl, shoulders giving a soft, almost nervous seeming, shrug. “we’ll see what happens, i suppose.” shifting in his seat, he settled is sights upon the gift she removed from within his hold, eyes darting between naomi and the gifts a couple of times before he spoke again. “i’ll go absolutely anywhere right now if you let me open that right now.” he teased, head nudging towards the wrapped gift that sat out of his reach. “unless you just wanna… sit here. and… watch me work.” he told her, devilish grin spreading across his face. “your pick, mi.”

if there was anything she could do to help, she would and it hurt her knowing that there was absolutely nothing she could to do for him to change his mind. it has always been like that since day one. she viewed him as the man who was always after his goals and she found no fault in that. but still, a part of her felt the need to pull him out of it for a bit and enjoy himself for once hence the reassuring smile on her face and that nod she always did for him to know that she understood every bit of his pain. to do that, next year she’ll definitely stay behind and celebrate the holidays with him. it didn’t have to be something big or fancy, the two of them was enough with some pizza or homemade food, they’ll probably both make and a little exchange gift.  “i’ll make sure we’ll celebrate it together someday. i promise.” wanting to put and end to the sadness that was slowly creeping in the air, naomi ended up pouting at his words, arms crossed over her test and shook her head. “come on now, jae. that’s a little bit unfair of you. that’s no fun! lets go out first then we get to open my gift for you and yes, as much as how shy i’d get, i’ll watch you unwrap the gift later, okay? and that’s a promise. pinky swear?” she smiled while pulling out her pinky finger.
