Atlas lies on the very edge of their large bed in his boxers, with the blankets half kicked off. He moved earlier in the night due to overheating from falling asleep curled in between Rocky and Simon. For someone that has a bed consisting of two kings pushed together to fit him and his four partners comfortably, it can be hard to get any personal space when everyone likes to cuddle up together. He turns over again to try and get comfortable for what feels like the millionth time tonight, after abandoning his phone earlier to try and get some more sleep.
He rolls over once more, turning away from where heās curled up against Rylands side to look at the clock on the nightstand, and groans internally when he sees that itās only around 3 am- not long after he initially went to sleep, and much too early to get up and do something. He stares at the ceiling in pure boredom and exhaustion, and considers giving up and playing on his phone again. He continues to lay there motionlessly for a few minutes, soaking up Rylands warmth from beside him. He blinks slowly but is unable to fall back asleep, and suddenly has a strange thought.
It came out of nowhere, and he briefly thinks about just ignoring it, but he finds that he really wants to know the answer now. You would think that it would be easiest to simply reach over to his phone and google it, but in his half asleep state, his mind forgets it's there, and decides that the best way to go about it is to sit up and shake Ryland awake instead.
āPsst, psst. Hey Ryland?ā He whispers quietly while lightly jostling the sleeping man, doing his best to wake him without disturbing or also accidentally waking any of the others. The blonde shifts, opening his eyes slightly and looking up at Atlas.
The taller man closes his eyes and slowly drags a hand down his face. āCan it wait until morning?ā He asks tiredly.
āI mean, it probably could, but I really really want to know now! Pretty please? You're a teacher, isnāt your life's goal to educate?ā Atlas responds with a slight impatience, giving his best puppy eyes to try and persuade his boyfriend. Ryland gives him an exasperated look and rolls onto his side, propping himself up on an elbow to properly face him, now mostly awake himself.
āFine, go ahead. You won't let me go back to sleep until you ask anyway.ā He gives in with a slight sass to his tone.
āOkay so,ā Atlas barges on, ignoring said sass from the man beside him. āHumans canāt see air, right? And fish canāt see water. Does that mean fish can see air in the same way we see water?ā
āI- what?ā Ryland pauses, trying to process the absurd question. āDid you seriously wake me up,ā he sits up fully to look at the nightstand, āat 3 am to ask me that? Why would I know the answer to that?ā He drags a hand down his face again and breathes out a deep sigh . āFudge. Now I kind of want to know too.ā he finishes reluctantly.
A rustle sounds out from behind Ryland, where Rocky is shifting in his sleep to get more comfortable. Ryland makes tense eye contact with Atlas, silently begging him to be quiet while trying to be as silent as possible himself so that they donāt wake him up as well. The movement stops, and the two of them take a breath of relief. They sit there quietly for a moment, thinking they got away with it, before theyāre both surprised by Rocky sitting up as well.
āWhat are we talking about?ā The freckled man asks while looking between the two. He moves to curl against Rylands back, resting his head on his shoulder tiredly.
āSorry Rock,ā Atlas replies sheepishly. āI couldnāt sleep and had a question, so I woke up Ryland to ask.ā
āOh? Well what was it? Iām interested now too.ā Rocky asks. Heās always been the kind of person thatās up for late night questions and conversations, and looks genuinely intrigued. Ryland lets out another deep sigh, realizing heās now caught in between the two people that wouldnāt let it go.
āDo you think fish can see air the way we can see water? Especially since humans canāt see air, right? And fish canāt see water?ā Atlas excitedly repeats the question from earlier. Rockyās eyebrows raise, and detaches himself from the blonde between them to fully sit up.
āThatās actually a really good question!ā He exclaims a little too loudly, and looks at Ryland. āDo you know anything about that?ā
āWhy would I know the answer to that?ā The man practically rolls his eyes. The three start bickering amongst themselves, when theyāre interrupted by the sound of a throat being cleared. The room goes silent, and they turn to see a very annoyed Adrian. They have slightly sat up from where they are cuddling with Simon on the opposite end of the bed.
āAre you three serious right now?ā They ask exasperated. āYou know what, donāt answer.ā They shake their head. āI don't think I need to know. You guys are lucky Simon sleeps like a rock.ā
āOh shit, I'm sorry my love.ā Rocky replies. Atlas, Ryland, and himself give Adrian varying looks of guilt, knowing that Simon has to wake up early for work.
āWe were just talking about-ā Atlas tries to explain, before theyāre cut off by Adrian. āItās fine hon.ā they say sternly, but not genuinely mad or upset. āBut now that youāre all awake, you can continue your conversation out in the living room.ā
āYouāre kicking us out? I was just caught between them!ā Ryland whispers.
āYes, Iām kicking you all out.ā They reply with a slight mirth to their tone. The three of them accept defeat and get up from the bed, trying their best to stay quiet, while Rocky also tries not to jostle Simon beside him. Atlas and Ryland dejectedly head out to the living room couch, while Rocky walks to the attached kitchen to make himself a coffee, because why the hell not at this point. After a few quiet minutes, Rocky returns to the couch with a coffee in hand and sits down next to the others. A few moments of an awkward and slightly guilty silence pass, and then Atlas pipes up.
Just posted my first real fic! It follows my sona/self insert Atlas, and his developing relationship with Grace, Simon, Rocky, and Adrian :)
Heres chapter one, along with a silly doodle, and the link to the full fic (so far), at the bottom!
ā¢ā¢ā¢
Itās another foggy day in the biodome on Erid. Thankfully after a few years of development, the eridians were finally able to make a weather cycle, but the fog Grace loves tends to show up the most. Not that Atlas is complaining. It's nice to lay in the bedroom of Graceās old home, staring out into the peaceful fog as he daydreams. He thinks that it tends to get a bit lonely having the house to himself, but he likes to think heās mostly adjusted to it by now.
A sudden knock resounds through the house. Atlas is startled out of his thoughts, and sits up from where heās laying. He wasnāt expecting any visitors today, but heās also not too surprised. Most days, heāll get a visit from the other humans in the biodome, or their eridian mates.
āJust a moment!ā he calls, untangling himself from his blankets, and heading to the door. Heās grateful that whoever is there has the courtesy to knock, as none of the doors have locks. He really should ask Rocky to fix that.
Speaking of the devil, He opens the door to see Rocky wiggling impatiently, and Adrian standing calmly behind him. āOh hi guys! What brings you by today?ā
āHello hello hello. Come to check on Atlas.ā a monotone voice comes from Rockyās portable translator. Iām surprised it can keep up with how fast he seems to be talking at the moment, notes blaring out quickly into the air for a moment before the translator can start working. āCan watch movie, go for walk on the beach-ā
āSlow down my love.ā Adrian interrupts. Rocky was almost talking too fast for the translator to keep up. He manages to bring such life to the dull tone of the translator, itās cute how excited he gets. āApology apology apology. We come by to spend time with you.ā Rocky finishes.
āYes, Grace and Simon are busy today. We figure that is perfect time to come spend the day with you. If you are up for it.ā Adrian continues. Despite their large size, they always have a calm and soothing demeanor. If the translator were more exact, Atlas was sure that their speech would be just as elegant as they themselves are. Heās hoping he can start to pick up some eridian himself. He thinks that maybe he should ask Grace, since he is fluent in the language.
āThat sounds great!ā Atlas replies. āThank you for asking. What would you guys like to do? Iām feeling up for pretty much anything today.ā He says honestly. Heās not always up for doing much these days. Antidepressants donāt quite exist in space (at least as far as heās aware), so he has his ups and downs with moods and motivation. Maybe they exist for eridians? Can sentient rocks have depression? He thinks that maybe he should ask sometime.
āDo not know Atlas favorite movie yet!ā Rocky exclaims. āMovie time, Question?ā
āSure! I havenāt fully watched anything in a while. Plus, iām always up to introducing anyone to Clue!ā Atlas says. āItās my ultimate comfort movie, I think you two will like it! Do you want me to tell you more about it, or do you want it to be a surprise?ā
āWould like to know more, but know Rocky likes surprises, so am willing be surprised too.ā Adrian states. āCome to our home, statement. We have big screens there.ā
āThat sounds good to me! Let me change and grab some things first, and iāll be ready.ā He quickly turns to enter his room and change from his pajamas into something more suitable for the day. A comfortable pair of cargo shorts paired with a loose tank top can never go wrong. He skips out on the shoes and socks. He was never a fan of them, and since the ground is artificial, he doesnāt have to worry about injuring himself on a sharp stick or rock. Or even worse, accidentally stepping on a bee.
He looks at the stuffed animal originally made for him by the eridians that had also been in charge of making clothes for the humans. Itās a cute little thing- a patchwork eridian made of a soft fabric they were able to synthesize. It was made upon his request to have as a comforting object, and it has helped greatly so far. Every night he curls up into it before drifting off to sleep, cuddling himself up to the soft plush. He stops momentarily, thinking of taking it, but decides not to for the fear of appearing childish or immature.
He walks back out into the living space. āAlright! Iām ready to go!ā he announces his presence, even though he knows that Rocky and Adrian could see him this whole time. He doesnāt like to think too hard about the lack of privacy. Rocky does a little jump and starts scuttling to the door excitedly, And as Atlas goes to follow him, He is stopped my the gentle pat of a large claw.
āWhy not bring plush, question?ā they ask. āIs for comfort, correct, question? You should bring.ā
Atlas hesitates. āYou donāt find it weird? Someone my age shouldnāt need a stuffed animal for comfort.ā
āIs not weird, statement. Should be able to have comfort no matter what age.ā Adrian reassures. Atlas pauses again for a moment, but ultimately smiles and goes to grab the plush.
He comes back and impulsively decides to give Adrian a hug, at least the best one he can give considering the size difference. āThank you Adrian.ā Adrian goes to respond, but is interrupted by Rocky barging back in. āWhat taking so long, question? Slow slow slow.ā
āHey! Youāre the one that rushed out without waiting for us!ā Atlas responds with a laugh, and begins to walk out beside Adrian, the previous conversation abandoned, and plush in hand.
