You know who Rowena reminded me of? Megara from the Disney film Hercules. The hairstyle, the whole "I won't say I'm in love," the cynicism... It doesn't hurt that the Trials of Hell are associated with Hercules in 8.14. Maybe I'm just holding onto hope for Samwitch, but the fact that Rowena said she had regrets (I know she wasn't talking about Sam, but still!)! I still think that she might have a future with Sam.
Confession time! I havenât seen Hercules, so I went and asked google what it thought, and found this:
Red hair, on point makeup, and the aura of Purple that we associate with Rowenaâs magic? Nice.
And youâre right about the 8.14 reference, where Kevin basically anoints Sam as Hercules (even though Dean intended to do the trials at that point, it was Sam who ended up in that role, almost by accident⊠if you can consider anything like that an âaccidentâ anymore, you know?)
Sam: T-trials like, uh, like Law & Order?Kevin: More like Hercules. The tablet says, âWhosoever chooses to undertake these tasks should fear not danger, nor death, norâŠâ A word I think means getting your spine ripped out through your mouth for all eternity.
But I went and read about the character of Megara, because I didnât know her story (I should probably watch more movies, I say while having no intentions to watch more moviesâŠ). So my buddy Wikipedia tells me this:
Meg as manipulative, sarcastic, fierce, and wise,
She is also hesitant âto get close to anyone lest they wreck her life furtherâ, suffering from a complicated past that leaves her bitter and cynical.
She was Herculesâ âversion of Kryptoniteâ, Supermanâs weakness.

one of Disneyâs few lady anti-heroes", representing âa reluctant heroâ until she encounters âsomeone who brings out the good in herâ
Meg resents being referred to as a damsel in distress, particularly by Hercules when they first meet.
Disinterested in and opposed to the idea of love, the character is cynical towards the idea of new romantic relationships due to suffering from a broken heart as a result of past failed relationships, particularly when an ex-lover left her for another woman.
Meg was âas world-weary as a downtown barflyâ.
Hercules must ultimately prove himself a hero by earning Megâs love.[
Meg âonly used her feminine wiles as a guise to pay her dues to evil Hadesâ.
[she finds her] particular power in the films: through blatant uses of sexuality.â Meg is depicted sexualizing herself in order to use her sexuality as a weapon unlike Jasmine, Pocahontas and Esmeralda, who instead are sexualized by the men around them.[
Meanwhile, Meg also undergoes character development, slowly opening up to and sacrificing herself for Hercules.Â
Herculesâ decision to sacrifice immortality in order to be with Meg as a âprogressive twistâ in which the hero sacrifices something important to be with his love interest, as opposed to the woman sacrificing.
Interesting how all of that sounds exactly like Rowena, yeahâŠ
