my tits are too pretty for this. for all these agonies.

over the years, i’ve been judged for saying things that people around me didn’t necessarily want to hear. not in the sense that i was telling them racist stuff or gore or going into intense detail about my sex life, but more going on a 20 minute rant about the lore behind the song 97 bonnie and clyde by eminem. that’s one offhand example but generally me being a mentally ill fuck that thinks everyone else wants to hear my opinion/take on niche media. but each time someone judged me, looked at me weirdly, told me to shut up, or even clearly was disinterested, a little piece of that confidence to talk about something i enjoy got chipped away. and eventually, after 21 years of living on this planet, of interacting, of sitting silently and listening, of living life the best way i could because it is, after all, my first time doing it, i’ve become this person that is scared to talk to even the closest people in my life about these things.

but then there’s those people. those people that light up as much as you do when you talk about the things you like, even if they’ve never seen it, or heard it. those people willing to intently listen to what you have to say, and those people make me really think about being reclusive.

i guess the question is do i allow myself to be built up by those like me or brought down by those i can’t understand.

I want to tell a story to the artists and would-be artists out there.

When I was 19, I made a large oil painting of the nerd I would eventually marry. I poured all my attention and care into this painting. It's the only art I have from back then that still holds up as a work I'm proud of today.

I entered it into a judged show at the local art center. It got an honorable mention. I went to see the show with my beloved model. One of the judges came up to talk to me, and highlighted that all the judges really liked the painting. It would have placed, except, you see, the feet were incorrect. They were too wide and short, and if I just studied a bit more anatomy-

I called over my future wife, and asked her to take off her shoe. Being already very used to humoring me, she did. The judge looked at her very short, very wide little foot. Exactly as I'd lovingly rendered it. I would never edit her appearance in any way.

The judge looked me in the eye, and to his credit, he really looked like he meant it when he said "Oh I'm so sorry."

Anyways the moral of the story is that all of those anatomy books that teach you proportions are either showing you averages, or a very specific idea of an idealized body. Actual bodies are much more varied than that.

So don't forget to draw from observation, and remember that humans aren't mass produced mannequins. Delight in our variation. Because it's supposed to be there.

five recipes for an exciting life (in my opinion)

spending enough time creating things with your hands (baking, drawing, scrapbooking, doodling, crocheting, journaling and so on)

keeping track of things like pretty skies, milestones, happy memories, appointments you're looking forward to

listening to music that genuinely makes you feel happy and energetic

making a habit of reaching out to people in a way that's comfortable to you (i send my dad songs he might like, my friend sends me monthly life updates)

being kind to all your five senses → like investing in a scented candle or essential oil dispenser or body mist, having a soft blanket or socks (or a soft animal to pet), listening to birdsong or the rain, looking at the sky more often, and having your favorite foods enough times

There's a cinematic equivalent of "this meeting could have been an email" where you get about two hours into a feature-length blockbuster and it occurs to you that this would have lost nothing meaningful if it had been a ten-minute short film on YouTube.

I would also volunteer "this miniseries should have just been a movie".

See Kenobi. It's a good story ... that only really needed ninety minutes to two hours to tell. They had to really pad out the middle to stretch it out to a full season when it could have just been a movie.
