i think i would have killed for something like this when tumblr was in its original grunge era and with the aesthetic having a resurgence i wanted to compile a list of essentials 👽🌿
black high waisted skinny jeans
oversized 'grandpa' sweaters or cardigans
regular black tights (to be strategically ripped)
pleated/ skater skirts (black, white, maroon, plaid)
oversized band shirts (popular ones include arctic monkeys, joy division, and nirvana)
striped shirts (black and white)
black or denim high waisted shorts for warm weather
flannels! all the colours! wear them with everything
if you're into more of a pale grunge vibe, grid patterns are your thing
same goes for holographic
doc martens (boots or low cut)
accessories/ hair/ makeup
bleached or coloured hair, and make it messy
space buns have always been iconic
silver and black jewellery
anything celestial themed
makeup should be either neat, with thick winged eyeliner and lots of mascara, or messy, with brown/ black eyeshadow, smudged eyeliner, and dark red lipstick
black nail polish (let it get chipped)
lots of chunky bracelets and rings
boxed water/ blk water/ voss water
tv shows like daria, skins uk, and american horror story
flash/ polaroid photography
cigarettes, alcohol, and other drugs are extremely common topics and motifs in this aesthetic, however i'm not gonna condone them at all. i started smoking at age 13 because of this trend and it took me 8 years to quit (i also developed problems with alcohol). these are things that are associated with 2014/ soft grunge, but they are the furthest thing from essential. to each their own, but if you're not a smoker, please don't start now.
