Ah, I have to make an intro? Well then, my name is Kamishiro Rui, and I made this account because I saw the rest of my troupe making accounts, and I thought that this would allow me to communicate with them more easily.

Title comes from Glory Steady Go, and name is from Rui being Weirdo 2!!!

Main is @ithappenedonroute66, and I go by she/her and may be called Leah, since I forgot to state that last time!!!! :D

Open Thread [Halloween Event, Mermaid AU]

Kotaro was in potentially the most distressing situation a mermaid can be in, that which was immobilized somewhere easily accessible to humans. So, yes, maybe he was a bit of a moron for fucking around as much as he did right by a fishing dock. But fishermen usually brought radios with them and that meant he could listen to that, listen to the fishermen whistle (he couldn't figure out how to do that yet), and if he was lucky, steal a handful of delicious worms from their bucket. He was pretty sure he understood fishing nets well enough to not get caught in one and he was more than experienced enough getting his hand ripped open on fishing hooks to not go grabbing any.

Unfortunately, the tide coming in caused a grocery bag to end up over his head, which wouldn't really be a big deal if not for the fact some discarded fishing line wrapped its way around his neck, trapping him in his plastic prison. He wouldn't have cared too much if it weren't for the fact it was one of those laminated reuseable grocery bags that he couldn't rip through. So much for "eco-friendly." With his neck gills, mouth, and nose now unable to receive moving water, even when he was latched onto the side of a boat, he was in a life or death situation. Most likely death.

He's freaking out, clinging to the side of the dock and lifting himself out of the water to breathe with the gills on his ribs every so often. He hears a voice. A human humming on the dock above. He ducks under, trying to stay out of sight, praying they'll leave, but fuck, they don't, and he can't breathe because stupid no swim bladder. Unbeknownst to him, directly in the person's line of sight, he drags himself up on the edge of the doc to take another gulp of air.

Rui frowned. That wasn’t something he expected to see…

“Oh my… we can’t have that, can we?” He asked, picking Kotaro up and setting him down on the dock.

“Sit still,” He instructed. “I think I can cut through this, as long as I can just find the tools…”

Kotaro yelps in shock at being handled by Rui. He was rather embarrassed just how easily he was seen, lifted, and captured. He can hear Rui's muffled words as the water starts to drain out of the bag through his body. It runs through the gills on his neck and out of the gills on his ribs and it feels strange, having water flow through them while he was out of water and stationary. Rui's voice is gentle, not smug or aggressive. As much as Kotaro thinks he should jump back into the water and escape, he doesn't have much of a choice. It was die suffocating, die starving, or die by being hauled off and chopped up into sushi by this guy. At least his body wouldn't go to waste.

“Found it! Now stand still, I wouldn’t want to cut you…”

He gently held some of the bag as he began to cut it apart.

Kotaro stays still, choosing not to comment on the fact he can't stand. He takes shallow breaths before gasping loudly when the bag is open. It's still wrapped around his neck but at least now he can see and speak. Wide eyed and speechless, Kotaro watches Rui. 'A human...a human touched me...'

"Are you having trouble breathing?" Rui asked, his tone serious. "I don't want you to suffocate, after all."

Kotaro looks away. What should he say? Should he answer? Maybe it would be bad if a human knew he could speak. But maybe it'd be good? Maybe he'd think twice about eating him if he knew he was of the same intelligence. Or at least capable of the having same intelligence.

"A little. I have two sets of gills, so it would take me a while to suffocate, b-but it certainly doesn't feel good to have some of them covered," he answers tentatively. His voice is hoarse as a result.

Rui nodded. "Ok, now do you mind showing me where the gills that are covered are? It'd be best to get those off first."

Kotaro sighs, a harsh wheeze, and tugs at the plastic still around his neck. "Just...get the whole thing off, if you don't mind," Kotaro requests timidly.

Rui nodded. "Then stay very still... unless you wish to get cut."

Rui gripped the bag gently as he began cutting it off.

Obviously Kotaro doesn't want to get cut, especially not on his neck. His skin is sticky with the residual salt of sea water drying up. Goosebumps raise on his upper half and the spines on his back shiver anxiously, the same way someone might bounce their leg while anxious. Once Rui has cut him free he takes a deep breath before leaning over the side of the dock and dunking his head in the water. Flopping around like a fish he returns to the water. He pops back up, just his head out of the water while staring up at Rui.

He giggled. “Does that feel better?”

Kotaro swallows the salt water roughly, throat scratchy as he answers, "Definitely." He looks around anxiously to be sure no humans or mermaids were watching them interact. "Thank you. Sorry for, uh, sorry for the trouble," he adds meekly, flattening the fins atop his ears in embarrassment.

He smiled. “I’m glad to hear that. And it’s no problem, really. It would be cruel of me to let you suffocate, after all.”

Kotaro supposed he understands at least that much. It appears human have at least the same base levels of empathy as mermaids do. There've been plenty of occasion Kotaro has detangled sea life from litter and scraped barnacles from turtle's shells. "I guess so...are you a fisherman?" he asks tentatively. Maybe he could go and grab Rui a sea bass or something to repay him for not killing him.

Rui shook his head. “No. I just happened to be seeing how good of an area this would be to put on a show, nothing more.”

"A show? Are you a singer? I am," Kotaro asks. Almost all mermaids sang. But their opinion of good singing was usually a lot more narrow than a humans. Kotaro liked the variety of human voices more.

“A show as in a theatrical performance, apologies for the confusion. And you are? I’m sure you have a lovely voice.”

Kotaro squints pensively at Rui. Theatrical—the meaning of the word was vague to her. Frankly, it was a miracle mermaid and human vernacular aligned so closely in the first place. She'd never done any sort of acting and until recently she's never taken performing all too seriously in the first place. Kotaro folds her arms on the edge of the dock to rest her chin. "I guess so. What's a theatrical performance?" Perhaps the words 'show' and 'acting' would make more sense in her mind.
