okay fic news and things i noticed in iron lung time
so hello to my dearests who are invested in my fanfic 🥹 i am sorry to say I'll be posting next saturday instead of today, I'll be honest i have like 1.6k words rn. also I've got my 2nd degree black belt test like in literally 15 minutes so I've been busyyyy ☹️ but i promise it'll be worth it !! and if any of you wanna ask me questions about the fic or anything else please do i love it
BUT NOW IRON LUNG IS OUT so I'll be more motivated and you have something to hold you over!! anyway speaking of iron lung here's some things i noticed with the beautiful quality and details and the ability to pause and rewind and CAPTIONS
- when Simon sees the ghost for the first time, he tries to reach for the other knife that the coi took from him on his belt
- when he's falling to the back of the sub after they cut the line, he hits his head SO hard on the divider wall it literally flips him the other way
- (this one is hilarious) they actually do give him "food" in the first aid kit, its wrapped in tin foil and is labeled ambiguously as "food. 1,200 calories"
- when the eel says "maybe you do deserve this" i actually think she's referring to what she's about to do to him, not just him being trapped down there
- a page in the manual (that was actually for the sm-6) talks about how the sub tracks its position, which if you've read the end of chapter 9 that's exactly what i need to figure out and thats actually what I've been stuck on bc i wanna be scientifically accurate
thats all i can think of for now but you best believe I'll be cooking with theories and edits. OKAY see you all next week

"He lunged across the controls to flip the switch to the window shielding, trying to still somewhat guard the chain controls with his lower body. She shoved his leg off of the console where he'd planted it to block her..."

"The edge of the console dug painfully into Mark's stomach and nearly knocked the air out of him, but that was a minor issue compared to what his eyes fell upon as the ship titled. The ocean. While leaning over the window, he felt as if he could fall right into it."
"It was only in view seconds before the ship jerked in the other direction, throwing him backwards with just enough warning for him to grab onto something to avoid falling again. What he did end up doing probably hurt worse than just falling.
His back and neck were arched in an awkward backbend from the whiplash, body held upright only by a hand on the console, another on the floor, and his knees braced against the concave space under the panel. His head stayed upside down as he stared at a far worse horror on the starboard side window."

Thinking about the Eel asking Simon "Would you give everything just to survive?"
And he says yes. He would give everything just to SURVIVE. But what defines survival? A heartbeat? Brain activity? Consciousness? The Eel surely has all of those. After he answers yes, that's when she gives him the coordinates to the light.
"And you will live..."
Simon will live. The Eel never lies. He would have lived, just as another mutilated creature like her. He said he would give everything, just to survive.
"...and we will be free."
We will be free. What if we've all been interpreting this the wrong way? She doesn't mean her and Simon will live. She means her and the other researcher she fused with. But what do they need freed from?
The god. The eye. The fragment of what caused the quiet rapture. She seems to be under its control, at its mercy, like a messenger or middleman. A host to a parasite.
What if what she really meant is, Simon will take her place as the god's "puppet" of sorts, and it will relinquish its hold on their consciousnesses and let them finally become a mindless sea creature like the others.
Simon was always meant to become a monster, yes. But what if it's more than that? He wasn't just supposed to exist alongside them. He was going to replace the Eel's role as the god's host.

gonna be honest I'm like sooo behind on chapter 6 I've been very busy this week and its my grandma's birthday celebration this weekend, but if I lock in and write inbetween bites of cake maaaybe I'll have it done by monday/tuesday? I promise it'll be worth the wait :))))

I was curious about your writing 👉👈 how do you linger on scenes and characters moment to moment feelings so well?
That's something I want to work on in my writing and you just do it so well, and I can't figure out how! I just end up repeating myself or moving on too quickly
The way you so perfectly describe Simons catatonic state and the constant stress Mark is enduring is so well done, and the internal panic Simon is feeling at the end of chapter is AUGH
aaaghh well first of all thank you 🥹🥹 im glad you think thats something i do well because tbh i don't even do it consciously... but I'll try my best to explain my process !!!
im actually currently writing a scene where im doing this lol but spoilersss so I'll use the catatonia scene as an example. i had a hard time starting that chapter and i only got that idea because i was listening to amber waves by ethel cain, and the lyric "is it not fun in the catatonia?" caught my attention, so i just started writing and expanding on that feeling. i think for the most part thats how i do it, i pick a feeling or a line and just keep yapping and expanding on it. obviously you have to be picky and choosy about when to go on about a certain topic, like if its high stakes i use shorter sentences and paragraphs to represent a choppy and unfocused mind. (thats one of the ways i differentiate mark and simon's povs, i try to keep simon's paragraphs shorter and more sporatic bc hes either spiraling or locked in lol)
so like, really put yourself into the mind of your character and think of anything that might pop into their head and just run with it. right now i just wrote a section comparing the o2 lights in the sub to the stars disappearing, which isn't exactly necessary but it adds more to the story yk? so basically just stuff like internal dialog, surroundings, tone and expressions, and going on tangents when appropriate
just looots of expanding is the best way i can describe it 😭 its hard to describe since thats just my writing style but i hope that helped a little bit?? honestly i already think you're good at it already but 🤷♀️ anyway im always happy to talk about writing hehehehe
