It was one of those days where both Bob’s room and her shop and Perfection Valley itself felt like oppressive forces, slowly closing in on her. It started with a bouncing leg, then Bobby pacing her motel room until she couldn’t take it anymore and decided to brave the Nevada heat just so she could run or do something. For all this open space around her, sometimes her mind felt so cluttered.
The grocery store had been her go-to walk lately, not far enough from the motel to make her sweat. Bob was walking quickly when the stranger slammed into her shoulders. It probably wouldn’t have been as jarring if not for the speed and force she was bringing to the table.Â
The anxious energy that had been gathering inside of Bob boiled over. She puffed her chest up familiarly in an attempt to be intimidating, bringing her back to her middle and high school days, when her scrawny ass had to fend off bullies with sheer confidence. “Yo, butterface!” Placing her hands on the handlebars of their bike, attempting to stop them from wheeling off. “That was my shoulder you so kindly shoved yourself into. At least say sorry.” Bob leveled her gaze at them.
They hadn’t even gotten on the bike yet, only to be face to face with this woman. A soft sigh fell from their lips as they smiled, “Sorry! I’m a bit late, uh, for work, ya know?” Soft and easy to listen to their voice was, well, perfect for radio. Some said they had the face for acting as well, but they never made it out to California.
They just found themselves in Perfection Valley and never left. What drew them here? They don’t remember but they stayed and made themselves at home. More recently, since the asteroid fell they hadn’t been out of the station, keeping the area up to date as the news came in. This was the first they’d been out since things had started to become normal.
“You, uh, seem familiar. Don’t you run a shop around here?” They recall playing an ad for it, or they think so. That and they may or may not have brought in their work laptop recently.
“I should have left years ago,” they say softly, a slim hand running through dyed hair. They liked to keep up appearances, making themselves look and feel younger as if to appeal to the younger crowd. Was it working?
They honestly didn’t know and at this point didn’t care, seeing as they were running late for work. Who else was going to give the weather and play soothing classics for the working man? No one, that was for sure.Â
Unless their luck had run out. They pushed past the other, not paying much attention and they shoved the groceries into the basket of their bicycle.
JEFF GOLDBLUM // have you seen BENJAMIN REYNOLDS around town? We’re trying to make sure they’re still in town, especially with everything that’s been happening lately. THEY are a 56 year old NONBINARY MALE. currently residing in Perfection Valley, but they’re originally from NEW ORLEANS. they are best known for being a RADIO HOST, and i hear they’re pretty HONEST yet also A GOSSIP at times; i hope they continue to survive. (wyrd, 22, central, they/them)
BENJAMIN REYNOLDS has lived in PERFECTION VALLEY for the last 20 years. Weird is basically his middle name by now. They host the widely popular and sometimes off radio show THE FREQUENCY, a station that not only lets you listen to good music, but tells you the weird and wild goings and comings of this not so perfect desert community.
Do they know more than they let on? No more than you do, listener. No more than you do.
