My ass has no idea what I'm doing but my brain is holding me at gunpoint to ramble about my OC's reacting to The Four's pet human. Imagine_Darksiders, I both blame and thank you for this.

Plauge: Totally cool with it. Finds it strangely but amusingly ironic that beings as old as the Horsemen could build such a relationship with a Human. The Human is at first wary of Plauge because...reasons, but quickly becomes bros. Plague is unoffically the human's wingman.

Famine: Just happy for her silbings. The Human comes down with a case of t h e f e e l s because Famine is as gaunt as Death, minus all The Reaper's strength. Still, overall, they do be vibing.

Life: Happy for the Horsemen (especally Death) and feels this will be a good way for them to branch out and relate more to "the common folk" of Creation. (That, and the fact Death can come out of his shell around one more person is a massive win in her book)

Conquest: Litterally couldn't care less if he tried...Is what everyone thinks anyway. He took one look at the human, just sorta nodded, and moved on. Strangely, the human noticed they had an Exlir of Longevity in their pocket after the fact, and a note, writen in beautfully smooth font: "Senectus excusatio non est."

P.S: I'm trying to 100% DS2's Nightmare Mode and it's whooping my ass.

if some people find me annoying and can't stand me because of how i think and act then that means i'm a fully realized human being with my own personality and opinions and free will and not just a reflective surface for other people's desires, which is in fact a good thing despite what people who want you to just be a reflection of their own opinions and desires will tell you, and why being considered "cringe" or whatever doesn't bother me at all

also it's really funny when you're confident enough in yourself to know that people not liking you isn't always a sign that you're the problem. like there's something undeniably hilarious about being aware your mere existence has the power to piss someone off and ruin their day and i recommend embracing it.

So following up on "favorite humans" of the Pillars, I've taken some time to compile a list of possible candidates for each of the Pillars (minus Michael) that are viewed with a little more grace than the average mortal, but not much better. I really tried to keep everything in character, so if something seems off, I'm so sorry.

Uriel: Seers & Scientists. I feel that she would find a certain fascination for humans that seek to explain, understand, and explore the mechanics of creation. Due to humans being unable to alter the fundamental laws of reality but rather attempting to explain how they work, she views them more as self-taught students from her perspective. Pythagoras, Euclid, Franklin, and Ada Lovelace, among other intellectual visionaries, would likely be a source of morbid curiosity to her. I do have her frontrunners being Marie Curie and Albert Einstein, though Einstein is viewed much more harshly than Curie for...reasons. As for seers, only one in all of history has stuck in her mind as a source of unease. A gifted, and thusly dangerous, seer who has foreseen events repeat across generations. A man who made direct eye contact with Uriel when he sensed her observation: Nostradamus. He is, to this day, a most disturbing mystery to her.

Gabriel: Preachers & Principles. Words are powerful weapons, and the pen can be as mighty as the sword if need be. They are the tools of choice for leaders and rulers across history, and some of the most significant events have happened thanks to eloquence in words. I'd guess Gabriel would have a certain level of begrudging respect for some of the Founding Fathers (namely Washington), Lincoln, and Sun Tzu, for their speeches, writings, commitment to a cause, and some of the most history-defining addresses and texts to ever exist on Earth. Raguel: Protesters & Pacifists. I have a feeling that the idea of 'peaceful protest' is an impossible contradiction to Raguel. How can something that disturbs the peace be peaceful? How can the 'aggressors' of a conflict be non-violent or, in fact, not be the attackers but rather retaliators? The concept both frustrates and fascinates him. Gandhi, MLK, and Malcolm X would be my likely guesses. The first two because of how not once did they push for the use of force, but still garnered such support despite that. Malcolm, because despite the different methods, he still never wanted general aggression but rather a means of necessary protection. Their ideals are something that Raguel constantly attempts to reconcile with his views.

Azrael: Philosophers.

Azrael is absolutely a philosophy nerd, and nothing will change my mind. She and Raphael are probably the easiest ones on this list. Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Confucius, and Immanuel Kant.

Raphael: Medics & Doctors.

Raphael has the easiest possible selection. Florence Nightingale, Louis Pasteur, Queen Seondeok of Silla, and Desmond Doss.

Universal Acknowledgement: Ashoka the Great, Charlemagne, Mansa Musa, Cyrus the Great, Leonardo da Vinci, Miyamoto Musashi, and Joan of Arc are probably the most 'okay' of humans in their eyes, with Ashoka and Joan being the most 'liked.'

Universal Ambivalence: Caesar, Alexander, and Napoleon, hands down, no contest. They have way too much nuance for their binary morality.

Oh these are well thought out! I love who you picked for Raguel and the reasons why. He'll be having conflicting feelings about many revolutionaries and activists. They disturb the peace and question the established order of things, which he abhors so much. Yet.... their dissent, when taken into consideration, can result in something... much more harmonious than the order that they defied...?

I feel like one of the biggest problems with Greek fanfic is that there's a razor-thin line to walk when writing literally any of the gods (minus Zeus, he's just an utter bitch), especially if the writer knows just enough but also not enough. I generally try to exercise as much ambivalence as possible, simply because there could be hidden details that completely alter how I view something. Like, I was pretty neutral with him, but I had zero idea Ares was a good dad. Or that Enyo was a thing. Or a million other pieces of info I have absolutely no clue exist. Like, sure, I get it if you want to do a personal retelling, that's the point, but quality and execution matter if you're trying to be serious about it. I like God of War, Hades, and the like, but that's because they are well done, well written, and well executed, not because they're completely accurate. I see takes that, while I understand the appeal and the story potential, completely warps everyone's characterisation incredibly badly (I saw that "What if Aphrodite really loved Hephestus" and, I do get it, but like...what?). As for the takes I do like, I don't pretend that it's at all true to the source, in part because I simply don't know enough about it. Yes, there are stories of Hades and Persephone I find greatly endearing and cute, but I have no idea what the depths of the original are outside of the general overview. Really, if there's one god everyone can universally write accurately, I'd say it's Zeus.

Actually nowdays I tend to treat Zeus is an asshole as a case by case basis since one story he can not be a philandering piece of shit and another story he's an abusive father and husband. (Thank you @bcowlick) but yeah. I don't expect everyone to get everything right but seeing some of the takes and willful ignorance Greek Mythology fans have astounds me.

Okey let me calm down a little. -Deep breaths- sorry Scrub, this just tends to get me most times and specially how the ask really ended on that note of all things.

Zeus is one of the most complex gods, he was never depicted as an unfair king. The greeks never depicte him with that intent!!

Zeus is god of hospitality. He literally hates xenophobia and punishes it in various myths like the most famous one where he drowns a whole town that was unable to give hospitality, except the elderly couple that passed his test, and he bless this erderly couple for it.

Zeus is god of justice, he's the one that judges evil and good!! He's not a tyrant and the greeks considered him fair and just most times.

Zeus is not even a bad dad. Negligent at best! And even then on accounted ocassions. If you check the myths, you see Zeus watching over his kids wellfare all the time. Athena being the most CLEAR example.

He's not perfect. But he was never meant to be painted as malicious. The greeks never saw him as malicious. Re-tellings just love to amplify the bad aspects of him, instead of exploring the complexities of his character as the god that had to handle every god in Olympus + being a guardian of fate. He is the leader and ofc is always easier to point fingers at the leader when things go wrong.

Nevermind that every god in Olympus haven't do anything that he hasn't

This is an example of what I'm talking about, with myself as the subject of it no less. I made that statement going off what I knew, and not the complete portrait, which is the point of the ask. But, as you said, most people base their opinions on modern retellings, and maybe it's just me, but sourcing some of this is difficult. You're right in saying Zeus isn't perfect, and I would also like a more exploratory interpretation of his character, but naunce doesn't change how utterly fucked the family tree is because of him. Besides, I'm fully aware that not everything bad is Zeus' fault, but he still has a pretty long rap sheet that's pretty hard to ignore. Also, when did I say anything about Zeus' parenting skills? I just mentioned Ares in passing, not in comparison.

Is not hard to source them. Most of the works of the iliad, the odyssey, the aeniad and more clasicals you can find for free on the internet. Source: I found the iliad in a free pdf a university posted on the web. That's how i've been reading and comenting on it little by little.

Then there's Theoi.com which is great for people starting on greek mythology for they have lots of passages of greek myths.

Chances are your local library has this works translated. You can find them for sale too. We're not talking about trying to find a needle in a hay pile. Most sources are a google search away

Even scholarship papers on historians discussing this myths in academic details can be found for free in google scholar.

It's not hard and i know because a year ago i knew barely anything about greek mythology but i, y'know, used the internet for what is for. This retellers have all the info for free and i would know so!

Ofc that doesn't solve the detail of how the re-tellers want to interpret the stories. As you said, Hades, Epic and PJO are pretty good because they make their research but also they are always taking artistic liberties, is natural. That is not the authors fault if their interpretation is rendered as gospel of greek mythology and that's why i hate re-tellings that aren't honest about them taking artistic liberties. Jorge at least always reminds you "Epic is not 100% accurate". Thanks Jorge.

As for Zeus, again he hasn't done anything other gods haven't done and get pardoned for over and over again in re-tellings.

Hades? The myth is literally titled "The rape of Persephone" yet Demeter is demonized for the sake of making the story a lovey dovey romance when the myth was all along about a grieving mother and the power a mother's love hold.

Poseidon? His list of lovers is twice the one of Zeus. A lot of his sons wind up being enemies to the olimpians even (see the Alodai gigants)

Hera? Don't blame her rage all on Zeus. She wanted to destroy Troy for the love of the game. Plus her relationship to Zeus was complex and the greeks did view them as a loving couple even if that's hard to believe now. And they even have myths to represent this love, not just the hatred but most people love to amplify Zeus wrongs and make of Hera a saint when she's not. I will take this one out of the way now btw, Zeus and Hera married in love. No, he didn't force himself on her. Hesiod's words, not mine.

Dionysus? His cult was all about dismembering people and pulling nuts out of their sacks. He wasn't "happy go lucky" drunk. He was god of madness and killed people in the most bizarre ways.

Ares? Glaze it all we want, he was still the god of war and the war itself. I think we can all agree war is not a good thing

I can go on but the point is: Is not fair that every other god gets the "Well, those were other times so lets just make him nicer for this story" but with Zeus we say "Let's make him a tyrant"

That's what makes me kinda angry. Like no, it was not just his doing that fucked up the family lol

Regardless, don't take this in the bad way. I encourage people into doing their research! The internet is right there, ask your local library about classics in greek mythology! I promise you, is not hard!

Oh, 100% this. Again, I have zero issues with artistic liberties, so long as it's blatantly stated. Like, fuck, my first taste of mythology as a whole was the Disney movie of all things. Now, I don't think negatively of it, but there is a huge difference between comprehending a story and knowing the inspiring source. It has honestly gotten a tad dull with how it's only Zeus being antagonistic nowadays. I do understand why he's shown and viewed as such, but that doesn't help things. There isn't any figure in any myth that doesn't have some giant flaw, and yet it's almost always just Zeus when the rest of his family can range from bad to worse. And that is the tightrope some writers can't walk. Like, fuck, even the Gods in Hades- including the often romantized namesake- all have flaws and shortcomings, reasons and motivations, justifications and beliefs. Is it a one-to-one, total recreation? No! Does it present all the Gods with nuance that fits their respective characters? While not perfectly, it works for the setting, and that's the important part. While the original myth was tweaked a little, Hades and Persephone's relationship isn't at all perfect, as well it shouldn't be-there's tension, uncertainty, dread, but it's not the stereotypical doting romance. I can see how Demeter may be demonized here with her coldness and the game's timeline, but she's still ultimately just a grieving mother who loves her daughter. And, even if it could be overbearing, Persephone recognizes that! Now, it's not verbatim to the source, but it still does its best to follow it, and it's certainly among the most compelling and complex portrayals of the pantheon. Damn shame they so often get boiled down by so many others. ...I would like to see a proper story about Typhon, though. The general view of "Zeus bad" would probably calm down when faced with something so much worse. And I risk, once again, looking like an uninformed dunce by saying this because I am probably missing some benign trait I don't know about the Father of Monsters.
