I just love this sequence so much and find the shifting power dynamics between these two so interesting. From the moment James and Sherlock meet, James is the one teaching Sherlock -- from math equations to how to seize opportunities (crashing the party) to how to stand your ground in face of bullies like Peregrine. He see Sherlock clearly, compliments him, encourages him to use his wit in the group and stands up for him first with words then by literally beating down everyone in sight uh actions

James is clearly aiming to impress and he does. Sherlock is the sidekick here, following James' lead from joining him at the head of the line to grabbing the whiskey when commanded, and he has no qualms about it.
