Aurora, the goddess of the dawn, is back!

In 1903, the site on Povarskaya Street, between Skaryatinsky and Skatertny Lanes, was acquired by the Moscow Trade and Construction Joint-Stock Company under the management of Yakov Rekka. The plot is divided into 2 possessions.

In 1904, a turnkey mansion was built at 44 Povarskaya Street. However, due to the original decor and large size, it turned out to be very expensive. The company was able to sell it only in 1909 to the Moscow merchant Ivan Mindovsky.

During the restoration in 2017, the sculpture of the goddess Aurora was recreated.

The Embassy of New Zealand has been located here since 1972.

On November 6, 2005, an evening in memory of architect Lev Kekushev was held at the embassy.

Moscow greetings to Venice

Merchant Yakov Shlosberg is the 14th owner of this land on Povarskaya Street. It is his mansion from 1911 that has survived to the present day.

Cute little balconies and Venetian windows (with two arches and a round hole) decorate the facade of the building.

The rich stucco decoration in the form of plant garlands, masks of beautiful maidens and babies-putti, lions - also attracts attention.

A griffin holding a lantern in its clawed paws illuminates the main entrance.

Almost no original furniture has been preserved, it was selected from storerooms and antique shops.

It has been the residence of the German Ambassador since 1956.

The mansion of Prince Boris Svyatopolk-Chetvertinsky (an ancient noble family descended from Rurik) of 1887.

After the prince's death, Countess Alexandra Andreevna Olsufieva, State Lady of Empress Maria Feodorovna, Chamberlain of the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna, wife of cavalry General Alexei Vasilyevich Olsufiev, acquires the house.

Count Olsufiev was a famous Freemason, who often held balls and meetings in his mansion on Povarskaya Street. And in 1995, the Grand Lodge of Russia was registered here.

Since 1932, the legendary Central House of Writers has been located here.

Leo Tolstoy "War and Peace" - House of Rostovs

The estate of the princes Dolgorukov (1770s), in the middle of the 19th century, Mikhail Bode-Kolychev acquired the mansion. Leo Tolstoy was related to the Bode-Kolychev family and often visited their Moscow estate. It is assumed that this estate served as the image of the house of Natasha Rostova (the heroine of the novel "War and Peace" by Leo Tolstoy).

The Babel Tower, the New York skyscraper and the Gothic cathedral in the center of Moscow.

The house on Vosstaniya Square (Kudrinskaya) is the most luxurious and pompous in decor of all the first soviet skyscrapers.

The non-residential area in the house exceeds the living area. Many residents held family celebrations in the common corridors in front of the elevators due tothe not so big size of the apartments.

An underground parking, a compartment for baby strollers on the ground floor and modern kitchen appliances were planned in the house.

Aviators' House - the soviet heads of aviation enterprises and famous test pilots received apartments in this high-rise.

It was believed that the higher the floor, the more prestigious.

The Church of the Icon of the Mother of God "Recovery of the dead" on Zatsepa

The legend of the icon's origin is described in the story "About the Repentance of Theophilus, a church steward in the city of Adana." Theophilus, the housekeeper, served in the house of a bishop. He was a very pious and honest man. According to the denunciation, he was accused of being dishonest, and was kicked out. His resentment at such an injustice was so great that in anger he renounced God. The devil invited Theophilus to form an alliance with him. The housekeeper agreed, but suddenly came to his senses and was horrified by what he had done. But there was no turning back, the charter was signed. In desperation, he locked himself in a nearby church and began desperately praying in front of the icon of the Mother of God, calling It "The Recovery of the Dead." The Mother of God heard the prayers of the repentant housekeeper and, extending her hand from the icon, returned to the astonished Theophilus the terrible charter he had signed.

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary was opened in 1911, but finishing work continued until 1917.

The tallest Catholic cathedral in Russia;

There is no bell tower in the cathedral, the electronic bell towers imitate the sound of real bells;

The construction was carried out only at the expense of donations;

The conditions under which the authorities gave permission for the construction of the temple: it must be built not in the center of Moscow, away from Orthodox churches, without towers and statues.
