EP Review: “Everything Is Changing” - begin again
Artist Name: begin again EP Name: Everything Is Changing Record Label: N/A Release Date: August 25th, 2015 Review by: Chase Stevens Purchase/Download: Bandcamp (name your price download)
As you may (and should) know, pop punk is still thriving. With an ever-developing sound and relentless energy, the genre has not only kept its devoted community alive but leaves it hungry for new music as well. But what’s with all the dudes? (Think of Pineapple Express’s opening scene). It’s about time we got more strong vocals from female fronts, and with Begin Again’s first release, “Everything is Changing” we get that and much more. The debut 3-track EP kicks off with “i ws nvr yr grlfrnd”, a hard-hitting opener that will not only have you bobbing your head to the beat, but will leave the infectious vocal melody imprinted in your mind for days. The halftime sections grab the riff into a rhythm impossible not to jam to and Ashley Cadwallader’s vocals are strong and spot-on, but best of all, full of attitude. Th next track, “pop punk’s dead, you’re next” is badass; it’s full-on aggression. The lyrics tackle the genre’s potential faults, such as cliques, unfulfilled reciprocation of respect from fellow artists, and people using others to further themselves. Like Ashley writes, it sounds like high school. The chorus features the guys, Andy (guitar) and Jon (drums) on vocals that give the song some extra aggression. Badass track. “cali’s worst dancers pt. 2” ends the EP. It’s a fast-paced acoustic number that is drenched in angsty lyrics and catchy melody. You know, pop punk vocals. The melancholy message of the chorus reads, “last night I told you I loved you but I wasn’t thinking clearly.” Awesome. And that beginning, “why would I wanna be with you? You make me fucking miserable.” Couldn’t help but smile. The title is no misnomer - everything is indeed changing. Included in that change, hopefully, is the emergence of more female fronts. Especially ones with such angst in their voices and lyrics like Ashley. Do yourself and the scene a favor and pick this up.
