“Ya’ got me there. So wha’ brings ya’ ‘ere?”
“Dad was moving here. Had to either move here or America...” she shrugged, “The lower drinking age swayed me, I suppose.”

“Ya’ got me there. So wha’ brings ya’ ‘ere?”
“Dad was moving here. Had to either move here or America...” she shrugged, “The lower drinking age swayed me, I suppose.”
I’d say you’d come ta’ tha’ righ’ person, but tha’s a lot of pressure ta’ put on myself
“Put yourself under a bit of pressure and you might surprise yourself.”
“D’you agree?” Finn asked the young girl, with a friendly smile. He’d no idea she knew his younger sister, but still thought she looked friendly.
Keegan looked up with slight surprise, having not expected to be caught out, “Oh uh...yeah.” she closed her book of scribbles and offered him a smile, “Definitely. I’m from Perth...lots of beaches around.”
“It’s a beautiful country so I can’t blame you. I saw how much you loved it,” Mila grinned. Mila was initially overwhelmed by Keegan’s presence. Seeing her again was unexpected so she wasn’t sure how to react. But she soon felt just as relaxed as she had when she’d spent her days with the girl. Mila wrapped her arms around her old friend, happy for the embrace. The past months hadn’t been the easiest time and it was nice to have someone else she trusted around. “I’ll make sure you grow comfortable here.”
“I really did endeavor to show you just how much.” she gave her a squeeze and pulled back to look at her, affectionately pushing a lock of her hair behind her ear and taking a step back, “That’s all I needed to hear then. Thank fuck I wound up here instead of anywhere else in Britain.” Her dad had been understanding when she needed to be somewhere where there was a chance she’d make friends and memories, he was so understanding...Keegan couldn’t think of that right now. “Fancy showing me around?”
“It’s the people that make the place. I prefer it to Australia. Probably because my mother is so far away though. I didn’t know you were around here… are you on holiday?
“Nothing beats Australia for me.” Keegan grinned over at Mila and slowly made her way down the steps towards her. She stopped and quickly shook her head, “With my dad now. He had to move here for work.” She paused before giving a quick chuckle and throwing her arms around her for a hug.
Dunno if there’s anythin’ quite like a day on tha beach.
Keegan didn’t know the young man but she’d overheard him. His words rang true for her but for a reason she’d rather not blab about. She stuck to stifling a laugh.
“Just a water with ice please.” Ellie smiled politely at the waitress. She knew the girl woould be bitching about the customer trying to get free water, but she didn’t care. She needed to cool down and wasn’t ready to eat in front of people yet. She was glad when the woman returned and immediately put an ice cube in her mouth, chomping on it happily.
Keegan watched as the blonde ordered her water, glancing over at the woman serving her. “Don’t worry about her.” she advised as she drank her pint. It was lucky that she’d acquired a fake ID back home...and that her dad hadn’t decided to move to America.
“Ah!” He dropped to his knees, jeans getting covered in dirt as he scooped up the little bug. He held it in the palm of his cupped hands, watching it scuttle around. “You nearly stepped on a lady bird.”
She watched the man drop down and blinked a little, “That was the most dramatic act I’ve witnessed in a while...” she perked up a little, “Quite refreshing.”
Why is it that even when we know something is a bad idea, we do it anyway?
“Because it feels good.” Keegan answered with immediacy that even surprised herself.
I wonder, if unicorns were to exist, would we be allowed them as pets?
“Who would stop you? The unicorn police? Would they ride in on unicorns? Or would they just have horns on their heads too because, really, it’d be hypocritical of them to keep the unicorns and ride them if we’re not allowed to keep them as pe-” she realised far to late that she’d rambled, “Moving on...”
“Is my accent really that confusing? Or am I talking another language as everyone I’ve served at work so far seems to be looking at me like I’m speaking Italian or somethin’.”
Keegan purposely looked at the other girl with a perplexed expression.
“Just kidding. I’ll look past your accent if you look past mine.” the Aussie said with a wry grin.
“To be honest, there isn’t anything all that exciting in this town. You have the chip shop and the local but that’s about any exciting social meeting place and the other stores are quite bland in comparison to other places.”
The brunette thought this through, not exactly a big fan of that idea - of the place being the shit hole she’d prepared herself for - though she wasn’t about to let it get her down. “I like chips...and I like to drink, a lot.”
Elsa sat down beside the brunette and smiled. “Well, I’d be lyin’ if I said Stamford was amazin’. Bu’ I do love it ‘ere, an’ I’m sure you will too if ya give it time. There are some lovely people 'ere, trust me. I’m Elsa, by the way,” she said. “So, where is home? Australia?”
Keegan looked at the other girl and smiled warmly at her - she was the first person her own age she’d talked to after all - listening to her. “That does give me some hope. Pretty name. I’m Keegan.” she gave a nod, “That’s right, mate,” she added the ‘mate’ for affect of course, “Perth more specifically.” she looked up at the sky, “Little gloomy here in comparison...”
“I’ve been so convinced that this place isn’t a patch on home that this is one of the first times I’ve really ventured out. Think you can change my mind? And by that I mean please change my mind.”
