The Probiotics and Mental Health Connection

Over the past several decades the number of prescriptions for antidepressants has skyrocketed. Concerns over prescription drugs are also on the rise. This has caused many people to look for alternatives to a course of drugs and they may have found it when it comes to depression.

There are a number of practitioners who believe that healing the mind may be more about healing the stomach. Is it possible that probiotic supplements and a simple change in diet can help rewire the brain?

The answer may lie in bacteria. The human body has at least 10x as many single-celled bacteria floating around than human cells. 100 trillion of these things are in our digestive system, mostly in the colon. They aid in digestion particularly breaking down fiber.

This research shouldn’t be surprising because scientists long ago recognized the effects emotions have on the digestive system – ever lose your appetite when something traumatic has happened? But now they’re realizing the correlation may go the other way as well, a healthy digestive system may mean a healthy outlook. Some scientists are looking into the gut-microbiome-brain axis.

Bacteria Make Happy Chemicals

Our brains and some bacteria create a neurochemical called GABA, which relaxes us. Others make dopamine and serotonin, these chemicals regulate our moods and behavior. Researchers are studying whether those made in the digestive system make it to our heads, and if they do, how? Some scientists believe the neurochemicals are transmitted over the vagus nerve that serves as the conduit of a two-way conversation between brain and gut.

Because this bacteria produces neurochemicals that help deal with stress, the thought is control the good bacteria and the amount of feel good neurochemicals the body produces and you have a way of dialing down the stress naturally.

Will probiotics become more popular than antidepressants in the future? It’s hard to say but researchers are working on it.

Should You Take a Daily Aspirin?

The idea of taking a daily low-dose aspirin for your heart is not a new treatment. For decades doctors have been encouraging people who are at high risk for heart attacks and strokes to take a low-dose, or children’s, aspirin to help thin the blood and reduce the risk of clots.

According to the American Heart Association only people who have a 6% or higher chance of developing heart disease over the next ten years should take it. There are online tools such as the Framingham Risk Score that helps people understand their risk. The quiz asks questions like family history, age, gender, and smoking habit. The protection aspirin affords is most effective for people who have already experienced a heart attack or have cardiovascular disease.

But heart disease may not be the only benefit daily aspirin users are seeing.

Aspirin and Cancer

In a recent review in the Annals of Oncology, researchers concluded that daily aspirin taken for at least a decade between ages 50 and 65 not only lowers the risk of heart attack, stroke, and premature death but also reduces your chances of contracting certain kinds of cancers such as esophageal and colorectal. Aspirin may also reduce risks with prostate, lung, and breast cancers.

This is not the first study that saw a correlation between aspirin use and cancer. In 2012, the National Cancer Institute found that aspirin users were 41% less likely to develop liver cancer and 45% less likely to die from liver disease than those who didn’t take daily aspirin. It’s believed that the anti-inflammatory properties of aspirin is what causes it to be effective against these forms of cancer.

Risks with Aspirin Therapy

At the same time that these hopeful findings are published another group found that in some women the possibility of gastrointestinal bleeding outweighs the benefits of aspirin treatment. Some people also give up the aspirin regimen because they dislike the bruising that often accompanies it.

Consulting your doctor or health practitioner before starting a daily aspirin treatment is advised.

Getting the Sun Involved

Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, now generates 37% of its own electricity through solar panels for a much greener stadium. It also created a cleaner space by installing solar-powered trash compacting Big Belly trashcans. These powerful trash eaters hold 6x what the old ones did. No more overflowing trash containers.

Cleaner, Greener Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles made a small change in 2010 with a large effect. They swapped out their old stadium cleaning products for a greener option and increased their recycling rate by 209%.

A New Windy City?

Cleveland’s Progressive Field, seems to be just that as it became the first stadium to install a wind turbine. This green feature joins its recycling initiative that to this day has helped them save about 25% of the stadium’s waste from going to a landfill.

Saving in Seattle

It should come as no surprise that Seattle, a city that recently took such a strong stance on composting that it’s vowed to fine people who throw away trash comprised of more than 10% composting materials, also leads professional sports in their reduce and reuse programs. The Seattle Mariner’s Safeco Field has saved more than $1.75 million in electricity, natural gas, water and sewer charges since 2006. One of the biggest changes they made was installing a new scoreboard in 2010, which uses 90% less power than the previous one.

While the changes we make in our own homes may seem tiny compared to what these stadiums are capable of, if these facts help you sway a member(s) of your family to embrace your ideas, or come up with some of their own, you’ve accomplished something large.
