This period of lockdown/pandemic v3 whatever you wish to deem it is has been pretty hard for us. We’ve remained close to home and not ventured very far at all. If we have put some miles in it’s been to well known spots with a distinct lack of adventure attached. Mum and Dad were at home this weekend so I took the opportunity to borrow their caravan sited in Aberystwyth. We’ve used it in the past as a base to visit Elan Valley, Devils Bridge and Hafod Estate to name a few. One thing I didn’t want to do this weekend was return to those ‘safe’ spots. We talked about heading down the coast but we’ll use that as our route home tomorrow so decided to head north and went a little further afield into Dolgellau. I planned it out in my head that after Dolgellau we would head down through Tal-y-Llyn and through Aberdovey and Tywyn on a loop before going back to Aber through Machynlleth. Dolgellau was stunning and I’ll go over this in subsequent posts and blog soon enough. This journey back through Tal-y-Llyn always had my eye on journeys home from installs after coming down the hill from Cross Foxes with Cadair Idris on one side and the valley and lake in front of you it truly is an amazing view. We pulled up on the side of the road and our youngest had a swim in the lake just like all the other young families making the same pit stop as us. My images don’t do this place justice. You have to visit to see it for yourself. Highly recommend a visit and we will be back to soak up Cadair Idris nature reserve and hopefully one day maybe even tame the mountain. Location | 📍Home Postcode | What3words | When | 19/04/2021 I have spent the last couple of weeks searching for a couple of bits and bobs to add onto my Wife’s birthday list. Her birthday was today and around a week ago the stars aligned. I received a follow from @beeswaxmeltsuk and within 24 hours and a few messages I had received a lovely set of samples (4 for £3.95) with a lovely buying experience to go with it. This image doesn’t do them justice, my poor photography skills shouldn’t put you off. My wife has always loved candles and very recently rediscovered wax melts so when I saw the page and had a little nose I couldn’t resist placing an order. She was over the moon with the melts and has popped one on this evening and we are now being subjected to a wonderful vanilla cheesecake aroma through the living room. Based in South Gower, BeesWaxMeltsUK are a family run business and their main focus (other than providing amazing scents that fill the home) is on the environment, being eco conscious and promoting the benefits of using beeswax! Looking at their website there are some interesting insights into the impact of the big guys in the wax melt/candle arena and these guys are trying to make a change by providing an eco friendly alternative that gives amazing scents to boot. Location | 📍Burry Port Beach When | 12.11.2020 . . . . . No filter. Honest. We have recently been blessed with a new addition to the family, a little pup. A new reason to walk when you would rather kick back. During Summer I have no issue in getting out of bed early hours and venturing out for a strong walk. Winter, different story, I find myself erring towards evening walks and lay ins. Two days ago my Wife asked if I wanted to go for a walk at 6:45. I laughed. She was serious, after grabbing this sunrise; lifting over north Gower/West Swansea which I captured from Burry Port beach. Who can complain? Location | 📍Cefn Sidan When | 17.10.2020 . . . . . Taken on an early morning stroll along the beach at Cefn Sidan on Saturday. Cefn Sidan is a spectacular, sprawling 8-mile stretch of golden sandy beach on the Carmarthenshire coast and we are lucky to live within walking distance. The gold-coloured sand hides a secret past that over the years has started to bear both the soul and the history of the area. Said to be Wales’s equivalent to Africa’s ‘Skeleton Coast’, parts of the bay have begun to sprout the remnants of shipping vessels long since wrecked on the sandy shores, and points to a past that is anything but ordinary. In fact, it is thought by many to have a rather dark history which can be traced back to more industrial times when the waterway was used as a major shipping route, transporting tin and coal from Llanelli and Swansea, passing the treacherous sandbanks along the way. Location | 📍Pembrey Harbour When | 15.09.2020 . . . . . Wales is famous the world over for the ‘Black gold’ of coal that runs through its veins in the South Wales coalfield. Most people would mention the usual valley towns of Merthyr, Pontypridd and such from the ‘traditional’ valley areas when thinking of the South Wales Coal industry. Pembrey harbour played a big part in the export of coal from these parts before it became too difficult to manage and investment brought about the bigger brother of Burry Port Harbour. What you are looking at here is a peek into the past of what once stood as a bustling port. Location | 📍Cefn Sidan When | 06.09.2020 What a lovely way to finish the weekend. A stroll along Wales’ longest beach. We are lucky to live so close to this jewel on Carmarthenshire’s crown. I found it very strange to have what seemed like the whole beach to ourselves for half an hour. There were some fishermen further up towards the main beach entrance but the Burry Port end was empty. We sat in the dunes for a short breather before heading back and the sun was gorgeous and warm even at 5pm. I know I say it a lot but we are lucky to be able to love where we live. Location | 📍St Justinians When | 05.09.2020 St Justinians is somewhere I have wanted to visit for quite some time now. The last time I headed in this direction we took a wrong turn and ended up in Porthclais never to see this beautiful place. It’s been a bit of struggle recently finding places that we haven’t visited. Don’t get me wrong there’s so many to be explored yet and we certainly haven’t saturated them yet but the main struggle I’m finding is the inspiration. This one popped into my head this morning and it was so rewarding walking the coast path while staring across to Ramsey Island. There was so much going on it was impossible to take it all in. The contrast between the old and new lifeboat stations is striking. I love how both are set to make sure the lifeboats dive into the lush greeny blue water below. It’s normally prime time for me and Claire right now. Late spring early summer signals the height of our adventures as a couple and with the kids. It is proving hard on us all not being able to venture out. As some form of substitute we have managed to get out every weekday morning this month for a morning stroll around our local harbours and beach. I know I have said it before but I have to be honest and admit that we are luckier than most to have so many different and interesting walks to have from our doorstep and it is fantastic during this period to be able to appreciate that fact completely. I’m happy to admit there was a part of me that took our immediate local area for granted, keep your eyes peeled for some updates of what we have in and around Burry Port. Self isolation. We found this little fella on a walk along the tide line on Cefn Sidan following the recent storms. Hundreds of thousands of empty shells with whelk, razor and otter shells making up the majority all OMG this stretch of Wales longest beach. I don’t know what drew me to this shell but I’m so glad he caught my eye as we were able to see our first Hermit crab in the wild, and he was alive and kicking. “A different perspective” I’m not one for B&W here as I love the colours that pop on the feed but this image just looks so much better in mono. This was taken on a more recent trip to a very popular spot at Church doors cove. We love the peace here and how the feeling of being transported to a far away land takes over, especially on a warm sunny day. What a wake up walk this was. Within minutes of hitting the path into the country park we were in the middle of a hailstorm. Grabbed a bit of shelter before heading back on our way. Within five minutes we needed shelter once more when the gusts 💨 and hail kicked in again. As soon as we decided to head back to the car the weather settled and the sun ☀️ came out to play. Decided to stay local today and boy what a decision. I really do love where we live, a near 2 hour stroll in and around Pembrey Country Park and Cefn Sidan beach.
