Key Information I. childhood and hogwarts years:
Born on a bitterly cold January morning, Wendy entered the world quiet with curious eyes that looked up at her mother as she held her. A young single mother, Jenny Slinkhard did everything that she could to give her daughter the best life. Wendy and her mother lived with her grandmother, who watched Wendy while her mother worked and went to university. Most of Wendy’s earliest memories are of spending time with her grandmother. The two were incredibly close and Wendy learned to bake and knit while her mother studied hard to become a teacher. Her life was unconventional by society's standards but Wendy hardly noticed. She was a happy and curious child that sometimes wondered where her dad was, but she could remember the haunted look on her mother’s face when she had asked one time, so she learned not to ask and instead was happy with the life that she had.
When Wendy was seven her first signs of magic appeared. She had been playing outside with some of the neighborhood kids when one of the big kids pushed her down. She had scraped her knee and ran home crying to her grandmother but by the time that she had gotten there, the cut had been miraculously healed, all that was left was some blood dripping down her knee. Her grandmother couldn’t explain it, and they chose to ignore it. Strange things happened around Wendy, things that couldn’t be explained. It scared her and she spent a great deal of her childhood worried that there was something wrong with her, maybe something that had been inherited from her father?
Her life took a turn when she was nine. Her mother had finally graduated and found a job teaching at a school on the other side of London. It was on her ninth birthday that her mother announced that they were moving across London and leaving her grandmother. It was incredibly difficult for Wendy to be apart from her grandmother, who felt more like a mother to her than her own mother. It got worse when her mother moved her boyfriend in. He was nice, but Wendy felt uncomfortable around him and spent most of her time in her bedroom, playing quietly and reading. All the while she wondered what was wrong with her and why strange things kept happening around her.
Her questions were answered on her eleventh birthday when a woman appeared at the door to their flat claiming to be from a magical school called Hogwarts. Wendy was told that she was a witch and that there were others like her. For the first time in years, Wendy felt hope. Maybe there was nothing wrong with her after all. She went through life feeling a bit more secure in herself and like maybe there was somewhere that she belonged, filled with people just like her. But she did worry that it had all been some sort of dream or delusion and that lasted until she stood on the platform with her mother and grandmother. Her mother cried as they saw her off, and Wendy did too.
Arriving at Hogwarts was the most incredible experience. She had met some nice girls on the train that were also first years, and they had told her everything that she needed to know about Hogwarts. It wasn’t until they arrived at the castle and she looked up at it as it loomed at her that she felt nervous. What if they had made a mistake? Standing in the Great Hall and watching as student after student was sorted, Wendy could barely breathe. When Professor McGonagall finally called her name, she walked down the hall with shaky legs and when she hopped up onto the stool, the hat was barely placed on her head before it shouted Ravenclaw. Professor McGonagall had given her the slightest of smiles before she headed off to her new house.
In Ravenclaw Wendy found her true home. For the first time since leaving her grandmother’s flat when she was nine, Wendy felt happy and accepted. She adored Hogwarts and her housemates. She loved the classes that she was taking and she learned everything that she could from her professors. She would frequently stay behind after class to ask questions and to make sure that her work was satisfactory. She made some of her best friends at Hogwarts.
II. during the first wizarding war:
Safe behind the walls of Hogwarts during the early days of the war, Wendy barely noticed that it was happening. It certainly helped that she was a muggleborn with a mother that had no idea what was happening in the wizarding war. Wendy heard the whispers, sure, about the man that called himself Voldemort but she couldn’t fathom the death and destruction that was happening outside the castle walls.
The war that Wendy encountered at Hogwarts was from the Pureblood students of Hogwarts. They enjoyed making her life (and any other muggleborn student’s) life miserable, especially as the war ramped up outside of the castle walls. Wendy kept her head held high as Slytherin students called her a mudblood or flung curses and jinxes at her when they thought that she wasn’t looking. When one of the seventh year Ravenclaw’s found her crying on a particularly hard morning, he reminded her that they were just jealous that she was smarter than them and not to let their words get to her. It was a reminder that she wasn’t alone and that she could get through anything.
By the time Wendy was in her seventh year, she couldn’t ignore what was happening outside the castle walls. The war was vicious and some of her friends had lost family members to Voldemort and the death eaters. She had felt safe behind the castle walls but with her impending graduation, she couldn’t avoid the anxiety that was growing in the pit of her stomach with each passing day. She knew that there were some people fighting against Voldemort and she knew that they were their only hope of ending this. After leaving Hogwarts, Wendy found a job at the Ministry and she tried to keep her head down and stay unnoticed. She moved back in with her mother and her new step-father and she tried to ignore the feeling that something bad was going to happen.
The bad thing that she had been afraid of happened just shy of three months before the war ended. She was on a camping trip with her boyfriend on the full moon when they were attacked by a pack of werewolves. Thomas, her boyfriend, was killed, but Wendy survived. Waking up in the hospital Wendy didn’t remember much from the attack except for the man that had stopped by their campsite earlier in the day. When shown a picture of Fenrir Greyback she felt a chill go down her spine as she realized that they had been hunted that night. It was a devastating blow that Thomas was gone and she would have to live her life as a werewolf for the rest of her life.
She was still in the hospital when the war was declared over.
III. where are they now?:
Wendy had been fired from the Ministry when they found out what had happened to her. It hadn’t been a surprise to her, but it still hurt to lose her job for something that she hadn’t asked for and she couldn’t control. When she finally left the hospital she quietly disappeared from everyone that she knew. She didn’t trust herself, she was a monster now and she didn’t want to accidentally hurt anyone. She was starting to get flashes back from the night of the attack and she couldn’t stomach the thought of hurting her mother or grandmother, and she decided that it would be better for them if they thought that she was dead like Thomas.
Over the past four years, Wendy has moved from flat to flat and job to job as people discovered her status as a werewolf. With each new flat that she found it was a little smaller, and in a worse neighborhood, and with each new job she has lost a little more faith in society. She still dreads every full moon and she tries to stay away from the other wolves that she knows live in London. She truly just wants her life back even though she knows that there is no going back to what she once was. Wendy is currently working for the apothecary in Diagon Alley as an assistant, doing whatever she can to keep her boss from asking too many questions about why she needs to take off once a month and why she is so cagey about her past.
