I am a little obsessed with all of hc’s tinkling accessories, especially as they must appear at night. Confession: I hadn’t even read the novel, but the description of hc’s boots tinkling as he walked during the bride arc sold me immediately. I think my goal is to paint that specific sound...

edit: very tired when I posted this (very draining painting) but wanted to jot down some thoughts since it’s always interesting coming back and reading these. I wanted to capture the feeling of standing under the enormous trees in autumn. Plus the love between hualian captured in the simple care and awareness the two have for each other. I was in a bit of an emotional rut yesterday but painting this scene was incredibly soothing, I wish I could step inside it. Listened to ‘Immanuel’ by Tony Anderson.

Summary of Art 2020 (favourites from each month), plus the collection of digital master / photo studies done this year. A bunch more in the old sketchbook (mainly Bargue plates) but this isn’t supposed to be exhaustive.

Well, it’s that time of the year again.

Truthfully, I did no drawing at all (aside from doodles in lecture margins) in the first 3 months. But then, quarantine started and suddenly I had the energy and urge to paint again. That lasted until we returned back to in-person classes, and suddenly all the energy for self-expression was used up on talking (instead of painting) so that slowed down and restarted again when the holidays began.

So 2020 in terms of art I’d say is a good year. I started the year with a poor grasp of colour. That’s improved markedly, but now the task is to explore a more varied palette.

For 2021, I think my focus will be on composition. Trying to train the brain to think in a graphical way, and reduce the artwork to a pleasing and interesting arrangement of shapes. Other art-related goals: 1) not get caught up in social media games 2) visit the gallery more often 3) relax, painting is fun, the blank canvas holds infinite possibilities :-)

Your Hua Cheng with an umbrella? An absolute stunner and we can't even see his face! But what caught my attention is actually your rendition of blood rain: very simple, yet so astoundingly effective that I can almost hear it drip.

Tbh I don’t get the hype around Alexandre Cabanel’s ‘Fallen Angel’, but of all the hxh characters, I reckon Kurapika’s the best fit. Thank you twitter prompt. Stretching the painting muscles after a long hiatus~

Well, this is a throwback! Done for a draw-this-again challenge, plus been catching up to the svss donghua & tgcf manhua, which inspired the style.

I think over the years, my idea of ‘improvement’ has changed a lot. It’s less about correct anatomy etc, but more about exploring and figuring out the best way to convey the image & feeling you have in mind. That means having a wide artistic repertoire so that you aren’t limited by technical skill, but it also means that some artworks can’t be ‘improved’ because they are already so successful in conveying what you had in mind.
