When Ilya’s memory starts going, when he can feel himself slipping, he starts recording voice memos while he drives.

It’s all memories, things about hockey, things about his Mama, about Svetlana, about life. It’s all about Shane.

Ilya tells himself the story of how they fell in love at least once a week as he drives home. He tells himself about their first kiss. He describes their wedding in ridiculous detail. He talks about moving to Ottawa, about Shane leaving Montreal, about the cottage and coming out and how they built their life together. He talks about the Big Fight and how they made up and that one Halloween when Shane drove two hours to see him in his costume.

Ilya repeats the stories in English, repeats them in Russian for the future potentially hard days when maybe English won’t register in his mind.

Ilya drives home every day and leaves himself voice memos, so when his mind starts going, when the memories are hard to find and harder to hold on to, he can open the app and relive the lost days from his own recollection, put the pieces of his life together from his POV so he never ever loses the important things.

When Shane overhears Ilya talking himself through a memory one day, he starts taking Ilya’s phone in the morning when Ilya is asleep and recording voice memos of his own to add to the list.

Shane makes sure that when Ilya starts to fade, when he goes looking for the parts of his life he can’t seem to hold on to, when the days slip and time gets blurry, the stories Ilya hears and the memories he recovers aren’t just about how much Ilya loves Shane… but about how much Shane always has and always will love Ilya, too.
