Saw a production of Phantom of the Opera last night, so here's some things that we liked/noticed :)
Meg was incredibly jittery and nervous the whole show, even before the Phantom. Flinching, shaking, etc.
Christine was so happy after she sang Think of Me for the first time, it made me sad. She was so proud of herself ☹️
Raoul was introduced through him sitting in the audience
The Phantom led Christine through the audience at the beginning of the title song
Christine looked like she was in pain during the high note section of the title song. Unsure if that was acting or if the actress was stressed. Either way, she did well, and it worked with the character.
After the song ended, she grabbed her throat
No creepy mirror doll
The Phantom was basically on top of Christine when he was yelling at her after she removed his mask.
The prop from Buquet's body was significantly taller than the actor. I did laugh at how much taller it was.
The moon turned red when the Phantom came onstage during All I Ask of You
Madame Giry put an arm infront of Meg during Masquerade to keep the Phantom from coming closer to her
During the second Notes sequence, Meg and Christine were holding each other
Christine's terror of the Phantom was played very well
For a moment, it seemed like Carlotta was feeling some sympathy for Christine, then she went back to dismissing her.
When the Phantom was taunting them in the office, his voice sounded like it was coming from different places all over the theater
Raoul and the Phantom were swordfighting, and Raoul kept taunting him, but the Phantom was silent the whole time.
During The Point of No Return, the Phantom grabbed Christine's arm very sharply. It was very abrupt, very violent. I liked it.
Christine repeated the Phantom's choreography back to him, and it read like she was trying to take some power back from him.
When Christine said goodbye to the Phantom, he kissed her hands and then her forehead.
For the record: your mileage will vary since Julia has said both in some interviews and at the stage door that she really likes to switch it up in response to the audience and the cast. Even between the two shows I’ve seen of her Monty in the same week, she’s played different parts differently.
I recommend not reading if you want to witness the chaos in person without spoiler. This was mostly compiled because I want to put this into writing before I forget all the little things and I promise it’s the last one for now lol.
Anyhow, here are almost all of my favorite Julia Monty-isms:
Such a giggly, smile-y boi
Both flirty and also harsh? Man has range what can I say
Is simply an orange cat fighting for the braincell
Julia!Monty took dance classes as a kid and likes to show it off
Does a dance-y lil grapevine move on “for fortune favors bravery” as she moves towards stage left
Has so much limb. There are arms and legs flying high everywhere
“Watch out bois” *wiggles eyebrows* “the big boss is here” *wiggles eyebrows and fingers*
Does some very silly head wiggles during the last bit of Bevan’s rap
Will not describe her gallop in detail. It is magnificent and should be appreciated in person or as a gif, which I don’t know how to make
Blows a kiss at front row center after BTL
Goes *nose goes* during the chaos after “I’ve got the plan”
Grabs Masterman’s lapels so sensually
The way she says “Johnny” more like “john-neh”
Looks so confused and like she actually pities Charlie when she delivers “Charles… you… can’t? see things clearly.”
So desperate when she goes “I HAVE A CONTACT” and slams her hands on the table during The Pitch
👐 *jazz hands* 👐 *silly walk and jazz squares* 👐
She does not climb onto the desk. She yeets herself onto the desk. At least once that I’ve seen, her momentum has caused the desk to move
“he’s… sturdy. but with… dignity? LiKe A cOw.”
Some of the positions she’s sat in or achieved during various dance bits, in Cockneys, and during her bows jump cannot be comfortable for a person with normal range of motion but she does them so casually and with so much swagger, I wonder if she’s just really flexible or if she’s hypermobile (I am hypermobile, I notice these things)
In at least one of her cockney jumps her leg was higher than Robert’s head
Is so tall even Brandon!Charlie partially hangs off of her during Spilsbury’s presentation. Meanwhile, Robert!Charlie fully jumps into her arms and is flailing in panic
delivers “just you know women… it’s good stuff isn’t it? it’s nice” so matter of factly
Breaks the fourth wall after she sings “we made you a man” to Bevan in order to smile at the audience :) and then does the giddiest lil running in place after Bevan says it’s believable
“oH aHoY tHeRe ✨LaDdiEs✨!!!” *head wiggles* - the entire following scene is a masterpiece
Blows a kiss at Jewell and then awkwardly looks around pretending nothing happened as she scuttles off stage
Has so much fun during Just for Tonight, including not trying to be subtle about “yes we broke the law a bit”
Does a full tap number mid-Willie Watkins
👐 *jazz hands* 👐 “I… feel fine and dandy!”
*giddy high knees*
The way she sprawls/manspreads out after Jean smacks her feet off the desk at the end of Willie Watkins
Her Juan is so excited to switch hats and just is so pleased to be there during The Briefcase Ballet™️ and then is so sad and pouty and teary (and once was actually crying) after he doesn’t get his birthday cake
In that scene post briefcase ballet pre bloody tea, as Julia delivers the “it’s happening he’s just gonna bend over and-“ she like makes a movement sort of arching her back and makes a little noise and then goes “ah… johnneh” super breathily (whatever you’re picturing… it’s… more)
Is also so very dramatic before/during/after “it’s a shame your cross little speech wasn’t a bit shorter”
So harsh and cold during bloody tea. One show I was at, almost the entire audience sighed or hissed in disappointment at her delivery of “no no no, it’s good, actually. having my job explained to me by the girl from the typing pool.” (almost all because a man behind me laughed ugh)
The way she delivers “you just… need… to lie” 🤗
She sings the “moron” in “if you need a moron to tackle a task” at the top of Act as If instead of speaking it and I am living for it
With full chest yells “I DON’T KNOW”
*sighs* *puts fingers together* “father’s tired”
So much concern in her “have you been practicing?”
*pans her silly pose as Charlie reads the line about the camera panning in the film script*
No idea how often she does this, but both times I’ve seen her, while delivering “what did you think, I was shuttling them to Adolf at every tea break??” with the appropriate arms, she does chasse chasse pas de chat across the stage with fantastic technique ft. pointed toes. We love a ballet queen.
Fully boops Robert on the nose after the “charlieeeee my wittle genius, father’s never been prouder” bit
Regardless of the Charlie, she picks them up several inches off the ground while she hugs them
Does a second tap number in front of the Glitzy curtain
So much limb = extra chaotic Monty flailing while strung up above the stage during Glitzy
Plays the imaginary flute during the conductor bow
Thank you for coming to my TED talk, I miss this silly yellow show already.
Dropping in when Anatoly starts singing, ending when you hear Svetlana start actually snarling at him for winning. Genuinely, I felt a little unsafe. Hannah is the best. And Ramone...god that voice!
hellooo remembered suddenly that ive had this lying in my memes folder for like two months and now that ive seen the show live i can confirm this is also what it felt like to watch act as if. look at my meme boy
I got extremely bored and did some digging across the internet
Idk if people in the fandom are aware of these photos from the 2019 production (not the most popular ones you see online when searching about that production) but here!!!
