Can we admire how much Carry On breaks the normal rules of fantasy?

-The antogonist that the protagonist always despised gets a happy ending that is as important and relevant as the protagonist’s

-The perfect girl realizes she doesn’t want to just be one factor in a happy ending

-The perfect girl decides she wants to live her life without any attachements to some prophecy/quest

-The mentor that our protagonist looks up to is actually a horrible, manipulative person that is at fault for most of the horrible things in his life

-10/10 positive and accurate representation

-The happy ending is filled with as much grief as joy

-Instead of just a happy ending, you are allowed to see the emotional damage and impact on a character

-FUCKING THERAPY BC THE CHARACTERS NEED IT???

Like honestly I could never thank Rainbow Rowell for breaking boundaries and exceeding my expectations of fantasy and writing in general

-the main protagonist/imminent threat isn’t inherently evil

-the setting is not wildly separated from real life (especially in that the characters have accessible and understandable technology and that their spells come from Normal creations)

Some Simon Snow Rant

When people say Simon Snow is bisexual and Rainbow Rowell didn’t acknowledge it in Carry On, I want to lean really close to them and whisper “bisexuality isn’t the only sensuality other than gay and straight”

Like can’t you see what she did there? She stated it’s ok to not label yourself, it’s ok to be confused about yourself, it’s ok to question yourself. It does not invalidate who you love. You can be confused about your sexuality and still fall in love. I mean I don’t know about you but I really needed that.

It always maddens me when people really kind of blame her for things like: why didn’t you confirm his sexuality? and then act like it’s her being disrespectful or smth? it’s actually the opposite and such an excellent example of good storytelling and giving depth to characters, two criteria I, personally, love most about her writing style and make her my favourite author

Labels don’t define who you are. You can love whomever you please. The thing about Rainbow Rowell is that’s she went on her own course. She wrote a story about a not-so-good magician who struggles with magic and is supposed to be the chosen one and she gives him a roommate who’s a complete and utter arse you him but gives you a little present:

The roommate is gay and in love with him.

Now, what I like about what Rainbow’s done with Carry On is that she gave you a gay character who pretty much self loathing towards himself BUT NOT BECAUSE HE’S GAY, he’s confident with himself and he’s proud of his sexuality, and I’m so just so happy Rainbow created Baz.

But with Simon, she didn’t give him a label. He’s not gay, he’s not bisexual, he’s just Simon Snow who has a boyfriend, who he cares for deeply and I just melt thinking about it. Because Simon doesn’t need a label to show just how courageous he is and how he’s always ready to help someone, he doesn’t need a label to be Simon Snow.
