Here’s a “life-hack” for you. Apparently concentrated Kool-Aid can be used as a pretty effective leather dye. I was making a drink while cutting the snaps off some new straps for my pauldrons and I got curious, so I tried it, thinking, “ok even if this works, it will just wash out.” Nope. It took the “dye” (undiluted) in about 3 seconds. After drying for about an hour and a half, it would not wash off in the hottest tap-water. It would not wash out after soaking for 30 minutes. It did not wash out until I BOILED it, and even then, only by a tiny bit and it gave it a weathered look that was kind of cool. Add some waterproofing and I’d wager it would survive even that. That rich red is only one application too. Plus it smells great, lol. So there you go, cheap, fruity smelling leather dye in all the colors Kool-Aid has to offer.

If you’re dying anything with kool-aid it’s best to use SUGAR-FREE ones otherwise the thing you’re dying might get all sticky

the flavor only packets where you are supposed add sugar are the best.  they will dye any natural fiber: leather, wool, cotton, hair,  flax, jute, silk and so forth.  heat the dye water so it is more potent.  let dry then rinse excess out in cold water.  there’s  a whole system to this.

I've been feeling iffy about cons lately...I just don't know why. It's like I lost all the hype when I was younger but now I just feel wonky??

This has been sitting in my ask box for a while, I’m sorry I just wanted to be sure to have enough time to give a proper reply/think of one.

I completely understand where you’re coming from. I’ve been going to conventions since I was 14, so it’s been quite a while. Starting out I was so excited for the cosplay aspect of the con, and just being around people who had similar interests to me. I always had a blast at cons. Last summer though, I kind of hit a wall where I just wasn’t having fun anymore. Like three conventions in a row were just awful and it kind of left me reevaluating if it was something I wanted to continue doing during college (I fully intended to stop cosplaying/going to cons after I graduated at this point). But as cheesy as this sounds, the reason I wasn’t having fun anymore is because I had changed as a person, of COURSE my interests and needs were gonna change. Before cons were 100% about cosplay and going all out for that, but now that I am older I realized that while I still love cosplaying it’s because I’m with my friends. Now, for me I treat conventions more like a mini vacation. Yes, I still cosplay and I love competing still, but now I make sure to leave time for what is going to make me happy. No more finishing costumes the night before in the hotel. Instead I’m going swimming at the pool or going to a silly late nigt panel in my kigu. See where I’m going with this?

The TLDR; conventions have SO much to offer. As you grow up your interests and needs are going to change, so what you get out of a con is also going to change. Find what it is that makes you the most happy now !! :)

Here’s how I made my “fur” for my Eevee cosplay. I used Jumbo braids from Arda Wigs and then sewed these wefts onto the top of my dress. If you have any questions, let me know!

ATTENTION COSPLAYERS:

I would like to make the paint brand “Angelus” known. It is a special paint that is for leather, faux leather, rubber, and similar surfaces.

This is literally the best paint you can buy if you love a pair of shoes, but they aren’t in the right color for your character.

This stuff coats VERY well AND the coats of paint bend with your shoes. This means no cracking!!

In the photos above I took black rain boots and painted them with Angelus Turquoise. As you can see, they don’t look black any more! It’s so good!

I managed to paint two boots with a little one ounce bottle of the paint, and I still have a third of the bottle left over!

The paint dries very fast, so you can put layer on top of layer on top of layer without it streaking.

You can get the paint on Amazon and it comes in every color!

I just really wanted to make this known!! :D This stuff is amazing!

Don’t buy Angelus pain’t on Amazon, it’s like $6.99 an ounce. Buy it direct from their online store the poster above linked, the single ounce bottles are $2.95 there. Also, a little goes a long way, unless you have something HUGE to paint, you can probably do it with a small bottle. I barely dented the one I got doing all the black on this;

Ahh, yes acrylic based. That is a general tip in fact. Feibings leather dye is mostly transucent but their white is opaque and.. acrylic.

Resolene is a sealant also for leather (which you can paint on a driveway and have it last for years) is also acrylic. And you can pix acrylic paint and regular art pigments into it. So I suspect yes you can tint the Angelus paints with pigments (think pearlex or pearl eyeshadows for a sparkle.)

If you have a pair of boots and can’t get this stuff a rattle can of acrylic paint (NZ- you can get it from Repco) also works extremely well on PVC.

But you can’t spray paint PVC/vinyl- yes you can. Just make sure it is acrylic. The stuff they makes vinyl/pvc sticky is in the enamel paints. Spray lacquer paints also work- again acrylic based.

Just as a head’s up for everyone but especially for those without access to this product. Also hopefully an explanation for why it works so well.

I’d love to try them but I got some plain pigment powder stopped in the US before it even got to NZ so I’m a bit wary of ordering anything atm :/.

I’ve already seen a couple of pieces with the wrong sleeves on the jeogori and it’s a pet peeve of mine so consider this a mini PSA!
