No Space for Survival

This photo was literally taken from the hip, without looking through the camera or screen, stood on a moving escalator
It’s relatively dull modern architecture for the sake of architecture but the way it was taken, without being framed up and in a transient moment, seems to add “something” to the image. The photo would have been almost impossible to stage, it just happened at that exact right time. Point and click…
A little like this image of a person carrying some balloons. Quickly turning around and capturing her with a foot just off the ground almost makes it look like she was floating away. Half a step later and it wouldn’t have that movement and life
These photos weren’t engineered or overthought, they are moments that existed for a single frame. No, they’re not award winning pictures but they are honest and real snapshots of what I saw at the time. It feels like that counts for something

While there is never a shortage of street art you can always be guaranteed that there will be a street or a corner where the trash has been left to overflow. 
The black bags had labels on that read “Environmental Crime” which means the city knew they were there and rather than removing them they just left them as evidence…
Erotic Art Class - A Different Photoshoot
A different kind of photoshoot… kinky but classy
Earlier this week I was invited to help out a friend who needed a photographer. This still life drawing event was a little more kinky than your average art class. Hosted in a dungeon in the south of England, people came to draw the models, who were a female Domme and her male submissive…
The objective for the photography wasn’t to shoot explicit erotica but to capture a sense of the vibe while keeping it artistic. Technically the challenge was working in a very low light space, with a lot of people close to the models and trying to avoid catching people’s faces at this private event
I’ve never worked on anything like this before and it was actually a lot of fun. Really impressed with some of the incredible artwork being produced and the way the models held the focus in the dungeon was a sight to behold. An absolutely stunning event by the team at Kink-Draw-Play who kept the space feeling very classy and artistic
It’s been a varied day for sure…
Despite the stormy skies over Wiltshire, the rain stayed off for long enough to try and get some pictures of the Avebury Henge & Stone Circle World Heritage Site
The stones here were placed over a period of roughly 500-600 years around 4500 years ago. The challenge was catching the detail of the stones against the bright but cloudy sky.
Unlike the perhaps wider known Stonehenge, visitors to Avebury can step through the gates in the perimeter fences and get in amongst one of Europe’s largest prehistoric monuments. Highly recommended trip with some incredible scenery and thousands of years of history
Light is what literally what makes a photograph. Experimenting with different scenes and their lighting can be fun and rewarding. Learning when to cool it, when to crush it, when to burn it and when to just let it breathe creates some great effects
Night time photo sessions give the light a different kind of weight. From the hyper bright of a shopping mall, to the dark framed neon chaos outside, there as so many effects to capture
It’s not always easy to find idyllic side streets, stunning street art or exquisite architecture. That doesn’t have to mean there isn’t anything to look at though…
Since starting to work more in colour, there are new features that jump out. The contrast and lighting learned from a couple of months in monochrome seems to have given some transferable framing lessons
Even simple blocks of bright saturation against grey and stormy skies can still tell a story and showcase drama in otherwise bland environments. The vibrance of natural colours in fruit and veg on a market stall can stand bold against the concrete walls and marble floors of shopping malls
Graffiti tags might not be the artistically elaborate murals you see in bigger cities but the placement and even colour choice can still make it feel like it’s part of something cohesive.
Anyway, here is a few photos from a passing walk through Aldershot in Hampshire, UK
I’ve really enjoyed learning to take monochrome/ black and white photos. Particularly liking the way they show structure of systems rather than just the physical shape of the streets buildings.
Maybe the actual contrast helps create that sense of juxtaposition between things like the clean clinical spaces, brightly lit square buildings and the grimy irregular shape of bags of trash just thrown in the streets
Like with this street, the same image in full colour feels like it has a different story to tell. Almost like the colour version feels more active, with the warmth of the light from the cafe as opposed to the monochrome which feels almost seared into place by the way the shadows cast on the floor and walls
You could be forgiven for almost forgetting that this is Guildford town centre at night. These old streets have so much character but we usually walk straight past and not notice
Always enjoy capturing some of the art that I come across the streets. Guildford didn’t disappoint…
